Red Sox in market for big bat

David Ortiz's slump has reached the point where, with Kevin Youkilis out with an oblique strain, Red Sox scouts are doing their due diligence in looking at other hitters. According to other teams' scouts, the Sox have been watching Washington first baseman Nick Johnson, who has battled some injuries himself but has become one of the Nationals' top hitters. He is Boston's kind of hitter - a guy with a very good on-base percentage - and he's in the final year of a three-year deal, earning $5.5 million. But the Nationals would want pitching prospects in a trade, and the Sox guard those like gold. There has been talk among scouts that the Indians might be willing to deal 29-year-old catcher/first baseman/DH Victor Martinez for young pitching. Martinez, who earns $5.7 million this season and $7 million in his option season next year, is hitting .409 with 7 homers and 25 RBIs. Another option, though less likely, would be Colorado's Todd Helton, who has always indicated that he'd OK a deal to Boston. But Helton is very expensive, earning $16.6 million this year and next and $19.1 million in 2011.

Pure media speculation, but any thoughts?

Another one I'm torn on. Victor has been one of my favorites for a long time and is one of the few consistent players on the roster. He's under contract for this season with an option for next at a relatively reasonable salary (especially for his current production). But, with a healthy farm system that could start producing some young bats and a dearth of ML-ready or near ML-ready arms in the minors, it would be intriguing to see what he could get in return. At 29, he's not young and after spending a number of years as a catcher, he's probably a bit older physically. The move to 1B should extend his productive years a good bit though. Personally, if the return was a blue chip pitching prospect or two that could be ready to contribute in the near future, I think they should listen. I don't know much about what the Sox have in their farm system, or if it's even enough to warrant serious consideration though...

Interesting that Koby does not want to return to Japan to pitch but would like to catch on with another major-league team. I have no idea what team would be willing to pick him up if he could not pitch for the Indians. I also noticed that Sowers has been moved to the bullpen in Columbus which is probably a good move because the hitters usually catch unto him after 1-2 innings.
Tampa's pitcher is 1-4 with a 7.27 ERA... which means the Tribe is probably looking at 0-2 runs at the most.

If history is any indication, he could probably throw the ball underhand and hold the Tribe to 0-2 runs.

I would personally buy him a ticket back to Japan if he wanted. Maybe middle relief is Sowers calling. It seems to have worked out decent for Laffey. It all seems like sticking bubblegum in a leak on the Hoover Dam to me though...

The Rays listed two third basemen in their line up card today - doh! :lol:

TB pitcher and Wadsworth's own Andy Sonnanstine looks like he'll have to bat third today as a result of the gaffe costing TB the DH spot. Big break for the Tribe.

Amazingly, it has taken the umpires about half an hour to sort this out.

Ugh, Huff is getting absolutely pounded. By a team with their fucking pitcher batting third. Not surprising. Disappointing, but definately not surprising. :!

The pitcher just got a two out RBI double in the 4th inning. Definitely not good. Huff gets the hook, down 7-3.

You know, when you can appreciate these jokers for what they are, a comedy troupe, they're much more enjoyable. I look at Indians games akin to throwing 'Dumb and Dumber' into the DVD player...it's a good way to shut off my brain, kill a couple hours and laugh my ass off. Seriously, they are just an awful, awful baseball team. Looks like another summer of watching the farm teams and thinking about what could be (and what could have been).

Go Cavs.
