Indians Tidbits (2009 season)

A Cardinal perspective on the trade

Future Redbirds

So much for the closer of the future. Mark DeRosa is a good player, and the Cardinals are in more need of offense than bullpen help, but my initial reaction this seems like sort of a steep price for just a rental. Franklin may eventually run out of magic pixie dust, Jason Motte, Kyle McClellan and Jess Todd just do not the stuff Perez has and I don?t think any of them will ever be more than middle relievers. Now, unless Francisco Samuel can figure out how to throw strikes over the next season and a half, or Motte can learn another pitch, the Cardinals will be driven to the free agent market to overpay for some 9th inning reliever after Franklin?s contract runs out next year.

The flip side is that Perez may never harness his control to be a closer, but even as a good set up reliever, that should be worth more wins in the long run.

I can't imagine anybody taking on a $10M a year closer who only is converting 69 percent of his save opportunities. If he gets hot, maybe somebody will be desperate enough, but, as It stands, I'm afraid we're stuck with his ass.

As for Perez, apparently he has good stuff, but "control issues". Sounds familiar. Hopefully the PTBDL is a big piece.

I've been watching the Tribe since 1983 and this is the most offensively sad attempt at baseball I've seen from an Indians team. Pavano goes tomorrow which means a 10-2 loss is likely.

i did love garko's attempt at a basket catch in LF today. only wedge is dumb enough to play him in the outfield.

That article bm11 linked above seems to indicate that the front office thinks this team isn't far from competitive and a full on rebuild isn't necessary. I don't know what the fuck they're watching, or how they think they're going to patch a rotation together, but that is absolutely frustrating beyond any words. Looks like more patchwork, year to year bullshit like the past two years. Tucking wonderful. Maybe Gil Meche will be available this winter...at least we wouldn't have to face him.

it takes a lot of blind optimism to make that conclusion. cleveland will be competitive if:

-carmona doesn't stay batshit crazy
-huff continues to progress
-laffey comes back and stays effective
-westbrook fully returns from tommy john
-hafner can play more than 2 out of 3 days
-someone, anyone in the minors actually steps up to be more than a AAAA player.

i won't hold my breath waiting for all those to happen.

What's more disheartening? The fact that there's a laundry list this long of things that need to go right? Or, that the front office have deluded themselves to the point that they seem to think it's possible?
