Indians Tidbits (2009 season)

There is NOTHING like witnessing this team's ineptitude in person. There is no fight left in these humps. They look bored and disinterested on the field and in the dugout. No point in me giving a fuck either. If Wedge isn't gone over the break, that organization can kiss my ass.

Agreed. I was ~12 rows back from home plate when Wood came in and blew the game vs the Cubs this past Sat. It was so ugly I immediately dropped him from my fantasy team (I don't know why I still had him, probably has something to do with sucking at fantasy baseball).

Fire Wedge already.

Yeah, actually a very insightful piece.

Oddly, I was sort of wondering how the loss of John Farrell had impacted player (especially pitching) development...

But the pile of missed draft picks is very disturbing. Hopefully, the "newer guys" do better...

(Incidentally, I did think the article was fair in that I think Shapiro has done pretty well with the trades-- Robbie Alomar aside... funny thing is, though, that even with Andy Marte being a bust, I was shocked that they got anyone very well thought of for Coco Crisp at all-- I like the guy, don't get me wrong-- but, he was what he was. Last year, just getting Shoppach for him seemed like a good deal, though)

Having said that... I would like to see Wedge go... and... a major look needs to be taken at the guys running the player development and scouting programs. All in all, Shapiro is a bright guy, and I hope he sees that to stay, he's going to need to shake things up... (Maybe including some of the personnel moves that NF had suggested.... maybe not, I don't know.. something STILL needs to be done to upgrade the corner positions in both the infield and outfield though... this has been a glaring weakness throughout his tenure.. )

Well, the injury to Abreu is worse than orginally thought. Turns out he has a separated shoulder from the play last weekend where he dove for a ball in the outfield. Pretty much done for the year. A shame.

For those who don't know, Abner Abreu is one of the Indians top position prospects (OF). He's very raw and is only in low A but has tons of potential (maybe the most of any position player in the system). It's too bad he's going to miss a half season worth of development time.

Probably even more time after a couple misdiagnoses, a staph infection, and an attack by a swarm of midges.

BaseballAmerica.com: Prospects: Prospect Hot Sheet: Prospect Hot Sheet: June 26

No. 1 NICK WEGLARZ, LF
INDIANS
nweglarz09100140.jpg
Team:
Double-A Akron (Eastern)

Age: 21
Why He's Here: .500/.667/1.056 (9-for-18), 1 2B, 3 HR, 8 RBIs, 8 R, 8 BB, 2 SO
The Scoop: For the first month of the season, Weglarz's numbers were as bad as any prospect's in baseball. The hulking Canadian slugger finished April with a .386 OPS, notching just five hits?only one of them going for extra bases.

But since then, Weglarz has been a monster, crushing everything in sight?or at least anything over the plate, as his batting eye is among the best in the minors. In 194 trips to the plate since April, Weglarz has has batted .327/.454/.628, bringing his season line up to .264/.390/.500 with 11 home runs in 67 games.

Weglarz is headed to the Futures Game next month, but he's spent the past few days abusing the Trenton pitching staff. He went 2-for-4 with a homer and a double on Tuesday, 4-for-5 with a home run on Wednesday, then came back yesterday to hit a home run for the third straight game. The Thunder had seen enough, as Weglarz walked in his four other trips to the plate, including one intentional free pass.
BaseballAmerica.com: Chat: Prospects Chat With Matt Eddy

  • Riley (Denver): Thanks for the chat! Great to see a Tribe farmhand at the top. Do you think that Weglarz has a chnace to be the Indians' every day leftfielder by the second half of 2010? Personally, I would take him over Ben Francisco right now.
Matthew Eddy: You, and most Indians fans, I'm sure. Francisco the overachiever has been a fun story, but Weglarz absolutely profiles as a corner outfield regular, and paired with Shin-Soo Choo in right, they'll push Francisco to a more appropriate reserve role.

They're still shitty.

Guess Shapiro wasn't married to that pitching and defense philosophy.

Wedge AND Shapiro both need to be parted with.....

all Shapiro does is make excuses, this is partially his fault, how there is such a gap between prospects, almost all of the decent pitching prospects are still 2-4 years away from the big leagues there is literally nothing close to MLB ready except for bums in AAA like Saarloos and Cassell

of course injuries have been killer because there is nothing ready and they have to resort to AAA scrubs and washed up players and to fill roster spots

DeRosa traded to St Louis...

http://www.rotoworld.com/content/HeadLines.aspx?sport=MLB&hl=268071

According to MLB.com's official Twitter account, the Cardinals have acquired Mark DeRosa for RHP Chris Perez and a player to be named later.
DeRosa was curiously held out of Saturday's lineup and was seen on the phone for a long period of time just before the game got started. We'll sort this out as more information pours in. As it stands, it seems the Indians got the short end of this deal

Perez will be 24 on july 1

His Career MLB totals 64.1 IP 4-4 8 SV 71K/37BB 3.78 ERA 1.37 WHIP

I truly believe we're going to get both. I can't fathom howe Wedge survives the break and there appears to be a succession plan in place with Shapiro moving up to team president. I just hope Shapiro doesn't meddle in personnel decisions and a fresh approach is developed.

Shapiro did an admirable job making such a small market franchise competitive for a couple years, but ultimately it wasn't enough and it's time for some new ideas. His reign was also marked with horrific drafting, so hopefully the drafting improves.

Well, can't say I know much about this Perez, but I was hoping to get a little more (similar to Blake last year), and maybe they could have if they waited. At least this may be a step in the right direction for the pigeon coop. I always knew DeRosa would go, now we'll see if they have the cajones to move some others and hopefully get some help for the rotation.

hes supposed to be a future closer

maybe this leads to Wood getting traded, im not sure how many teams will be calling about him now though considering how shitty he has been
