Indians Tidbits (2009 season)

Crowe with a good night, hopefully he continues his trend of doing much better the second time he sees a new level. Saw Jason Donald had three K's for Columbus tonight. Only one game of course and I hope he turns out well but the acquisition of he and Marson are the thing that aggravate me the most regarding the fire-sale trades. Just didn't understand either, neither have a spot in the projected 2010-2011 lineups so they should have gotten some higher upside lower level talent.

Eh, I can see the frustration, but I think they both have a spot. Donald is insurance if Valbuena doesn't pan out (and I've seen nothing to convince me he will) or at least a utility infielder. Marson will likely compete with Shoppach for the job next spring and at least be a backup who see's significant time. Down the road, having Santana and Marson (provided they both pan out) will be nice, I think a quality backup catcher is one of the more underrated pieces of a baseball team. Carrasco and Knapp were the "meat" of that trade.

Fucking Wood. :slappy: Worst FA signing in franchise history...no joke.

Just watched the Martinez comments... love that guy. Emotional. Disappointed. Genuinely dejected about leaving Cleveland. When is the last time we could say that?

Incidentally, Cliff Lee has a no-hitter going in his first start in Philly.

This is why the Jays will not compete for quite some time

If the Indians hadn't bailed out the Phillies by handing them Cy Lee, they might've caved and taken the Jays deal.

I don't know...Kosar maybe?

Yeah, Cliff pitched a beauty...CG, 4 hitter, 1 run. Cliff's a very good pitcher, but he's not somebody as a player I ever grew attached to. Victor on the other hand has been one of my favorites for 5+ years. Hate to see him go and he was a class act all the way. Would love to see him back in a Tribe uniform one day to close out his career.

TOMO OHKA!!! :banger:

Now that they are fully committed to a rebuild, I want to see the following:
  • LaPorta called up and seeing fulltime duty between the OF and 1B. 1B is gonna be a major need next season (lets face it, Marte ain't gonna cut it) and LaPorta may be needed there.
  • Once Marte flames out in the next couple weeks, give Aubrey another look. He may be able to platoon there next season.
  • Santana is still a bit off, so bring up Marson in September and see what he can do behind the plate. Shoppach is not a fulltime catcher and Santana will need AAA time next spring. Torregas is up now, but his ceiling isn't very high.
  • Brantley up in September and playing in CF. Grady's shoulder is still bothering him and him continuing to struggle for a shit team is pointless. Let him and Crowe get quality at bats in the OF.
  • Rondon getting a couple September starts. With as thin as the rotation is going to be next year, he may be in the thick of things.
After the season, give Wedge his fucking walking papers. He is as much to blame for this team's dramatic decline as anybody or anything. His game management and strategy is dreadful and he has mismanaged countless young players. If this team is going to build from within, they need somebody that can handle young players...Wedge is not the man. They're not going to spend the money for a name manager, so I'd like Torey Lovullo to get a look.

They're not gonna have a lot of money in FA, so they'll have to spend wisely. Hopefully, Shapiro is moved up to pres and hands over the GM duties to somebody who is a little better at finding FA's and drafting. This organization's drafting philosophy needs a complete overhaul. Here's some FA thought, with a small budget in mind.
  • The bullpen will need at least an arm or two. Some guys to consider that could be had for a reasonable price: Joaquin Benoit (Tex), Kiko Calero (FL), Randy Choate (MIL), Mike Gonzalez (ATL), John Grabow (CHC), Ryan Madson (PHI), Matt Thornton (CHW)
  • Possibly a 1B to platoon or hold the position until somebody better is found: Frank Catalanotto (MIL, veteran player who could be a good clubhouse guy for cheap), Nick Johnson (FL, could be interesting if they want to spend a little more dough)
  • Possibly a 2nd tier SP. I'm not convinced Fausto's ever gonna come close to his 2007 form and Pavano is unlikely to be brought back: Doug Davis (AZ), Brett Myers (PHI), Brad Penny (BOS) are possibilities that come to mind.
Gonna be a couple more lean years, but they're stockpiling some talent in the minors and if they're handled correctly, there could be a bright future. Time will tell, but I feel better about the direction of the franchise than I did a couple weeks ago. That will change drastically if they bring Wedge back though. It's alarming the man is still employed.
