Indians Tidbits (2009 season)

3. the "dolan doesn't spend" theory is mostly hogwash. cleveland is in the top half of the league in salary. they problem is that roughly $34 million of $81 million is tied up in 3 players, a part time DH, a starter on the DL, and an ineffective closer. small market teams making that kind of salary investment need to do it on every day players or starting pitching. closers and pen guys need to come from within the system. small market clubs can't afford to pay for those.

I dont know if I would call it "hogwash".

We are #15 in the league. Respectable. But lets look at where the 1st place teams are on the payroll list:

Yankees- #1
Tigers- #5
Angels- #6
Phillies- #7
Cubs- #3
Dodgers- #9

There are teams that can do it with low salary numbers every couple years, liek the A's and Marlins and the Rays last year.

In 1997 the Indians were #3 in the league in payroll.
1995 - #9

2. teams aren't ponying up prospects like they used to, getting a great return on lee or vmart is going to be tough.

Don't know if I agree with this. We got a nice haul for the Brewers renting Sabathia for half of a season, it seems the Halladay deal isn't getting done soley because the Phillies don't want to part with Drabek. I'm not sure it's a league wide issue

phillies, dodgers, red sox, and yankees. all big market clubs that can buy virtually whoever they want via free agency, but all of which are absolutely unwilling to part with the prospects necessary to get deals done right now.

the brewers were desperate for their first taste of postseason play in forever and blew their load on CC.

Figured a Garko trade was coming. Best of luck to Ryan as I always thought he was one of the more under appreciated players in the organization

Indians Prospect Insider: BREAKING NEWS: Ryan Garko traded

1B Ryan Garko has been traded to the San Francisco Giants for Class A LHP Scott Barnes.

Scott Barnes is 21 years old and has made 18 starts in Class A Advanced for the Giants, going 12-2 with a 2.85 ERA. In 98 innings pitched, he's struck out 99 while walking 29. Batters are hitting .227 against him. He leads the league in wins, is second in ERA and his 99 strikeouts are tied for ninth overall.

Barnes was an eight-round Draft pick in 2008 out of St. John's University. He is listed at 6-foot-4, 185 pounds. Baseball America named him the ninth-best prospect in the Giants' system before this season.

Phillies offered J.A. Haap and their top OF prospect for Halladay and it was turned down. Dodgers seem ready to offer a big haul of prospects for a FOR pitcher. Red Sox offered Buchholz for V-Mart straight up and it was turned down, and i'm not sure the Yankees have any prospects worth noting. Oh and the Rays have been rumored to be shopping Wade Davis their top pitching prospect for another starter.

I just don't see the difference between this year and any year in the past.

Agree Garko was underrated but it was time to see him go. He proved he was never going to be anything better than an average 1B (please don't go Ludwick on us)

With this, Graham for Betancourt, and Todd and Perez for DeRosa the Indians are adding some quality depth in the system, without unloading any key parts to the team.

you gotta sell high, look what happened to Shoppach his value was high at the end of last season and now................

this is a decent return for Garko

considering we have plenty of 1B types

cant find much scouting info on barnes

some dude name Nathaniel ranks him as the #90 prospect overall MLB prospect

90. Scott Barnes | Here's a Thought: Nathaniel's Top 100 MLB Prospects: #90-81

Organization: Giants
Level: High-A
Position: LHSP

Lost in all the Madison Bumgarner/Tim Alderson hype is this 21-year-old lefty, whose three-pitch arsenal (fastball/curve/change) won't wow scouts, but overwhelms hitters.

Barnes works around 90 with his fastball and uses the changeup as his out pitch, and the curve isn't bad. In some ways, that sounds a lot like Cole Hamels. Barnes won't be as good as Hamels, but he should be in the Zach Duke (when he's on) class of pitchers.

they take a 2-0 lead

and then schlub ass Pavano promptly hangs back to back meatballs to the first 2 hitters the next inning to make it 2-2

make that back to back to back home runs, 3-2 angels and no outs, great going Pavano
