Indians Tidbits (2008 season)

I don't agree with Marte starting at 3B the rest of the year. I'd rather see Blake there. With the way his average has shot up as of lately he's now batting .282. Now I'm not saying he's our solution in the long run, but hell if we can get him to hit .280+ until Hodges is ready, I sure as hell would take that rather than Marte's whopping .150. Not to mention Blake now has over 50 RBI's and has a chance at 90+ RBI's.

Wait... someone WANTS to see Blake play? Blake is gone after this year... why not find out if Marte is going to be worth anything to this team and play him everyday to see what happens. The Indians have to find out what they have so they can make an informed decision this offseason.

Regarding Blake... he was not happy with his one year contract this past offseason. If I recall he wanted a multi-year deal in the $7-$9 million a year range.

Indians shut out MLB-leading Rays

Friday, July 11, 2008 10:59 PM

CLEVELAND ? Cliff Lee pitched six stellar innings in a warmup for a possible All-Star game start, and the Cleveland Indians defeated Tampa Bay 5-0 tonight.
The loss extends the Rays' season-high losing streak to five games. The Indians beat the Rays in Cleveland for the 11th consecutive time since Sept. 29, 2005.
Jhonny Peralta hit a two-run homer and RBI double off 7-6 James Shields.
The Indians entered the four-game series on a 10-game losing streak ? their longest in 29 years. But they have claimed consecutive wins for the first time since June 26-27.

Indians Insider: Gutierrez, Garko have plenty of questions to answer in second half

Chuck Crow/The Plain Dealer

It's been a difficult season for Indians outfielder Franklin Gutierrez, who has struck out 48 times in 204 at-bats in 2008 and hasn't had a hit in his last 32 trips to the plate. The Indians are in the process of self-discovery, using the rest of the season to find out just what gives when it comes to their future.

It's a scenario definitely going through the minds of Franklin Gutierrez and Ryan Garko. A year ago, both players figured prominently in the Tribe's plans. While there have been plenty of struggles to go around so far this season, Gutierrez (.215) and Garko (.237) have been two of the mysteries for the Tribe's faithful.

Neither was in the lineup for Friday's game against Tampa Bay at Progressive Field.

"I had my chance at the start of the year," said Gutierrez, who seemed a lock in right field after hitting .266 with 13 home runs last season. "I have to do my best and figure it out."

Since June 15, Gutierrez has gone hitless in his last 32 at-bats. He's batting .190 (15 for 79) since May 22.

Garko's woes are just as perplexing. After hitting .317 with two home runs and 11 RBI through the season's first 18 games, it has been a steep drop. He has only three extra-base hits since May 18 and was mired in a 9-for-61 (.148) slump over the last 16 games.

"I'm not going to make excuses," said Garko, who hit .289 and had 21 home runs last season. "Every player goes through struggles. The work and effort are the same. If I had the answer, I'd make the adjustments."
Manager Eric Wedge was preaching patience.
"You can't be too emotional about it either way," said Wedge. "They've got a set of tools and you have to look at what they have accomplished. I think it's still too early. But we've got to figure out who can help us today and in the future."

Wasn't Mark Lewis a #1 pick? Another great name from the past, or Greg Swindell...
Swindell gave us a couple of good years but I have to agree with you regarding Lewis he certainly never did pan out and you could go back and find more #1 draft choices by the Indians that never did much of anything.

You might want to check out Garko's batting average over the past month. It is probably not much better than Marte's. Plus, you have to see what the guy might bring to the table before you just cut him loose. We have an abundance of first baseman in the minors and Garko better pick it up or he might be seeing a lad of bench time. He is also not the best in the field or on the base paths.

ahh, i see. so, you prefer guys that throw mid 90's fastballs with no control, because in your world, style points get you outs. laughable. and borowski's era and whip were much better in save situations last year.

as for cliff lee, he isn't being looked at as an ace. cleveland's "ace" is currently on the DL. He's a possible #2, but really a #3 guy. but, for some reason, he'll regress to well below his career averages next year in your world.

Yes or No, Borowski looked good closing games last year??? And Borowski's ERA for a closer was well above average for last year. His WHIP was also high for a closer. Maybe I'm wrong, but a closer with an ERA over 5 and WHIP close to 1.5 seems awfully high. That wasn't even from this year, those are last years numbers.

And he made almost every save opportunity an adventure.

It was a position of need this off-season. But so was 3rd base and corner outfield.

It's all moot anyways, because if nobody had gotten injured we'd be right in the thick of things. Hafner and Victor were lighting the world on fire pre-disabled list.

yes or no, borowski's save rate was about his career average last year?

yes or no, style points make outs in major league baseball?

also, in save situtions, borowski's ERA was below 4.

I thought Ginter pitched well today. The bullpen has given up 4 runs, but hey, we are still winning.

The offense is starting to score a little and getting some hits.

We are on pace for our third straight win. Got to take it one game at a time.

Also: Matt Laporta and Wes Hodges will be playing for USA, and Hector Rondon will be playing for World in the Futures Games, which is on tomorrow at 12:30 on ESPN2

Ryan Garko, who paced the Indians with five RBI, hit a two-run homer off Matt Garza in the second inning to break out of a 9-for-61 (.148) slump.

CLEVELAND -- On a night when the Indians promoted a pitcher to make his first big-league start in three years against the team with the best record in the American League, everything worked. If only the first 92 games of the season had gone so well.
Matt Ginter pitched five scoreless innings and Ryan Garko emerged from the baseball desert to drive in five runs as the Indians beat the struggling Tampa Bay Rays for a third straight time, 8-4 last night in Progressive Field. The three-game winning streak is the Tribe's longest in eight weeks.
Ginter allowed five hits and struck out five for his first big-league win since May 21, 2004, when he was with the New York Mets. He will make at least one more start as Fausto Carmona (strained hip) works his way off the disabled list.
"He threw the ball very well," manager Eric Wedge said. "It was just a great effort from a guy who hasn't been here all year."

Indians continue win streak behind Matt Ginter

REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

CLEVELAND The Indians have entered some sort of strange, parallel universe.

During their recently vanquished 10-game losing streak, the Indians lost games twice with All-Star Cliff Lee on the mound and once with reigning AL Cy Young winner CC Sabathia pitching.

Now they can run out Matt Ginter and win games.

The Tribe gave Ginter plenty of run support, not that the journeyman pitcher needed it, in an 8-4 win vs. the Rays at Progressive Field on Saturday night. The Indians have won three straight, all against Tampa Bay, by a combined score of 26-6. It's the Indians' first three-game winning streak since the middle of May.

Manager Eric Wedge felt like a "cloud" hung over the Indians with all of the Sabathia trade rumors. Trading the staff's ace earlier this week was a blow, but at least the Indians had some clarity on where they stand.

Yes or No, Borowski sucked this year? Yes or No, many Cleveland fans thought the position should have been addressed last season, let alone the off-season??

Who was right??

Borowski and his 5+ ERA got rocked this year like he did last year. Unfortunately he didn't get lucky like he did last year.
