A terrific 10: Shoppach, Choo fuel another big night as streaking Tribe wins 10th straight, 9-7

by Paul Hoynes Thursday August 28, 2008, 12:17 AM

Duane Burleson/Associated PressKelly Shoppach gave the Indians the lead for good Wednesday night with his 17th home run of the season, a two-run blast that gave the Tribe a 5-4 lead en route to a 9-7 victory over the Tigers in Detroit.
DETROIT -- It's one thing to say the words. It's another thing to live them. Manager Eric Wedge tells his players to live in the moment. He tells them not to worry about the past or future. All that matters is now.
The Indians won their 10th straight game Wednesday night with a 9-7 victory over Detroit at Comerica Park. It's their longest winning streak since April of 2002, but there's more to it than that.
They've won 16 of 19 to climb from last to third in the AL Central. On July 7, they traded CC Sabathia to Milwaukee. Then they lost three straight to the Tigers at Comerica to put the finishing touches on a 10-game losing streak that effectively ended their season.

Can we be this year's Colorado? If Minnesota and Chicago play .500 ball the rest of the year. If Cleveland goes 25-5 in their last 30 games they can tie for the division!

Can you tell that this is a sleep deprived post?

i think eric wedge did an interview on STO a fe days ago where he said that they would prefer to wait for September call-ups to bring victor back so as to not have to make any other roster moves to make room for him. being that it's the 28th, that makes sense.

hafner's shoulder was clearly far worse than he let on. i wonder if that's why he signed that extension midseason last year as he knew this could be problematic in the near future. just shut him down for the year.

Indians Insider: Martinez close to return, with Barfield, Hafner not too far behind
by Paul Hoynes
Wednesday August 27, 2008, 8:56 PM

DETROIT -- Travis Hafner and Josh Barfield won't rejoin the Indians until September. Victor Martinez, who caught nine innings Tuesday for Class AAA Buffalo and went 2-for-4, could rejoin the club this weekend against Seattle at Progressive Field.

"There's still a chance Victor will be brought back before September," said manager Eric Wedge. "It will probably be September for the other two guys."

Wedge hasn't given himself much leeway with Martinez. Big league rosters expand Monday, Sept. 1.

Lonnie Soloff, the Indians' head athletic trainer, gave an update on the injured Indians.

Martinez (right elbow surgery): After catching Tuesday, Martinez DH'd Wednesday. He's recovering from surgery on his right elbow and has reported no problems throwing or hitting.

Barfield (left middle finger surgery): He's playing consecutive games and seems fully recovered from surgery on his left middle finger.

Hafner (strained right shoulder): He's played four games at Buffalo, but missed his third straight game Wednesday and isn't expected to play again until Thursday after developing soreness in his right shoulder.

"Haf's rehab pace has slowed," said Soloff. "He played every other day for a week or so. It was his thought that he could use more time developing his endurance by working in the cage and progressing through batting practice as opposed to game situations."

Hey, I was fully awake watching last night's game and thought the same thing about them going 25-5 or whatever and then thought what the hell am I thinking about. I need to get concentrated on the Browns and hope that the Indians make some good acquisitions for next year or maybe leave the team as it is and trade Martinez and Hafner for a starting pitcher:lol:

Took a nap at work and had a delusional dream of CC facing off against Victor in the World Series.

I think I really need to get some sleep.

Next thing you will see is Wedge come in like Lou Brown with a lifesized poster of Larry Dolan in a speedo and tell the team that for every win he will cover up a portion of the poster (in 25 pieces).

hahahahaha....

I wouldn't mind seeing Pronk not coming back this year. I'd like to see him get healthy and 100% ready to swing big next year

25-5 the rest of the way is probably a little too much to ask

but the schedule could be favorable to make that run

3 with Seattle at home

3 with Chicago at home

3 @ Kansas City

4 @ Baltimore

3 with Kansas City at home

3 with Minnesota at home

3 with Detroit at home

4 @ Boston

3 @ Chicago

3 games with the lowly Mariners and 6 with the Royals could provide a boost

and 6 with the white sox could catch us up a few games if we can go 4-2 or 5-1 against them

the Minnesota series at home could end up being a key one if they come in hot (with like a 13-3 or 12-4 record in the 16 games before then)

4 @ boston at the end is a road block though

I am probably being delusional here thouh

Jensen Lewis has given stability to the Cleveland Indians' bullpen lately, his success as temporary closer giving manager Eric Wedge an opportunity to stop the revolving door and use other relievers in regular roles.
It's doubtful Lewis has done enough to nail down the job in 2009 -- Wedge recently said finding a proven closer is the team's No. 1 priority in the offseason -- particularly considering his erratic performance early in the season. But Lewis probably can establish himself as a prime setup man if he continues to pitch well.

Indians Insider: Hot streak a matter of pride for Tribe

by Paul Hoynes Thursday August 28, 2008, 9:02 PM

Duane Burleson/Associated PressBen Francisco and other young Indians have become increasingly effective over the last month of the season.

http://www.cleveland.com/tribe/plaindealer/index.ssf?/base/sports/122000944168040.xml&coll=2
It's hard to figure the Indians.
They returned Thursday from a three-game sweep of the Tigers at Comerica Park that extended their winning streak to 10 games, their longest since April of 2002. In July they were swept in a three-game series at the same ballpark to stretch their losing streak to 10 games.
So what we have here is 10 down, 10 up and 30 to go.
The Indians are the first team to have losing streaks of 10 or more games in the same season since the 2004 Tampa Bay Rays. The Rays lost 91 games that year.
Their latest streak is part of a surge that has seen them move from last to third place in the AL Central by winning 16 of their last 19 games.
