Indians Tidbits (2008 season)

Where the hell was this earlier in the year. Holy crap. It's like they had a 5 month Spring Training. Well I hope they can finish this year out on a high note and with some confidence and maybe we will be okay next year

it's amazing how much easier the game is to play when there are no expectations anymore.

GUTZ!

Puts the Tribe in the lead with a 10th inning blast. 4-3.

Jensen Lewis will probably come on to close the game. He's done well in his few auditions for the job.
One of the very few joys that I can get out of this forgettable season is the fact that the Tigers, for all their offseason additions and high payroll, are currently only 1/2 game better than the Tribe.

That Marlins trade was a whole bunch of noise, because while I do think Cabrera is a very good player, I also think Willis is done. His numbers were very mediocre the last couple seasons and I think that herky-jerky wind up and throwing motion have ravaged his arm.

Lewis for the save!

8 in a row!

Like you said, at least we're not the Tigers.

what's even funnier is that the cabrera's contract was even bigger because he was thought to be that rare power hitting 3rd baseman teams crave.

now, he ate himself out of that spot and is a mediocre 1st baseman, and dontrell willis is working with Lou Brown at Tire World during the Mudhens offseason.

Sizemore joins 30-30 club, Indians win again

By The Associated Press
Grady Sizemore reached a lofty plateau, and he might not be finished.
Sizemore hit two home runs and joined the 30-30 club and Franklin Gutierrez had a 10th-inning solo shot to help the Cleveland Indians win their eighth straight, 4-3 over the Detroit Tigers on Monday night.
At Detroit, Sizemore homered on the game's second pitch and became the 14th American League player ? the second from the Indians ? to have at least 30 homers and 30 stolen bases in a season.
With 32 games remaining, Sizemore has 31 homers and 34 steals, giving him an outside chance of becoming the fifth player ever to reach 40 home runs and 40 stolen bases in the same season.
Not that he's obsessed with getting there.

Tribe inches toward third Sizemore becomes 30-30 player, Gutierrez blasts winning homer in 10th
By Sheldon Ocker
Beacon Journal sports writer

Published on Tuesday, Aug 26, 2008
DETROIT: It's not exactly the series of the century, but in the limited world of Indians and Detroit Tigers baseball, the three-game set counts for something.
Network news shows aren't likely to pre-empt the Democratic National Convention to flash word of the scores, but a showdown that might determine who finishes third in the Central Division probably is the best these teams can hope for this year.
The Tribe struck the first blow with a 4-3 win in 10 innings Monday night to trim the Tigers' advantage to one-half game.
Comerica Park is not regarded as a hitter's paradise, inasmuch as the vast stretches of outfield grass seem to stretch for miles.
But the Tigers walloped two home runs and the Indians hit three, with Franklin Gutierrez going deep with one out in the 10th to account for the win.
It was the second
consecutive game that Gutierrez has produced the game-winning hit in the last inning.

Sizemore, Gutierrez help Tribe win 8th straight

by Paul Hoynes Monday August 25, 2008, 11:37 PM

Duane Burleson, APGrady Sizemore hit his 30th and 31st homers of the season Monday night, making him a rare 30-30 player (30-plus homers, 30-plus steals).
Detroit -- Grady Sizemore became the essence of power and speed Monday night. Zach Jackson didn't do too badly either. Sizemore hit Armando Galarraga's second pitch of the game over the fence in left-center field at Comerica Park to become only the second Indian to hit at least 30 homers and steal at least 30 bases in a season. He started the third inning the same way, only this homer landed in the right-field seats.
All that merely set the stage for another appearance by Captain Late -- Franklin Gutierrez.
After scoring the winning run in the eighth inning Saturday and singling home the winning run in the ninth inning Sunday, Gutierrez homered in the 10th inning Monday to beat Detroit, 4-3, and give the Indians their eighth straight victory.

Tribe winning streak reaches eight
Sizemore joins exclusive 30-30 club
Tuesday, August 26, 2008
BY JOSH WEIR

DETROIT Grady Sizemore is in the process of making his mark in Indians history.

Zach Jackson and Franklin Gutierrez are just looking to secure roster spots.

They all furthered those causes Monday night in front of 39,196 fans at Comerica Park.

Sizemore joined the 30-30 club andhomered twice, and Jackson produced the best of his three starts since coming to Cleveland. Those performances almost went for naught, but Gutierrez's 10th-inning home run off Cleveland native Gary Glover proved to be the difference in the Tribe's 4-3 win against Detroit.

Brendan Donnelly pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his first win since May 17 of last year, and Jensen Lewis gained his seventh save in as many chances as the team's closer.

The Indians' season-best eighth straight win pulls them within a half-game of the Tigers for third place in the Central Division.

Sizemore became the second Indian ever to join the 30-30 club for home runs and stolen bases when he crushed the second pitch of the game for an opposite field solo shot. Joe Carter had 32 home runs and 31 steals in 1987.
