Indians Tidbits (2008 season)

Bullpens might be the most tempermental group of people in all of sports...one year it's the best in the bigs, and the next year it's the worst.

It can go the oher way too....who really thought we'd have one of the best in the bigs last year, after the previous season?

All you can do is stockpile arms and hope some of them find a groove for the season...this year they didn't. It's a snowball effect, the best thing that can happen for these guys is for the season to end. Every one of them walks out there wondering how bad they are about to get hit.
Agreed for the most part. However, a number of these chumps have just been awful all year. You like to see occasional flashes of decent pitching, but guys like Betancourt, Mujica and Mastny have been nothing short of pathetic all year. Even Kobayashi, who has looked decent at times, has come apart at the seams. Right now, I'd say Perez, Lewis and Kobayashi (based on some flashes) are the only guys I'd want back.

and I agree with you as well...my only thing, is would it really surprise you to see Betancourt become a solid relief pitcher somewhere else next year? I'd be surprised if he sucked this bad next year...I don't really care either way if they keep him, I just expect him to be respectable next year. It just seems like pitching has the most ridiculous ups and downs.

It's very possible that a change of scenery could be beneficial to him, but it looks to me that he was simply a one year wonder. Him and Perez were a terrific tandem last year, but this year he has just been terrible. I actually expect him to give up 2-3 runs everytime out. I don't notice anything different in the way he pitches, just seems hitters have figured him out. Perez's numbers have leveled off somewhat from last year, but he's still been pretty reliable.

Guys like Mujica and Mastny are just fillers and always will be. I think Kobayashi can be decent, but he's not gonna be the potential closer I think he was signed to be. Lewis has a live arm, but has been very erratic. At least Shapiro is willing to acknowledge that this is an area that needs to be upgraded this winter, I just hope his vision of an "upgrade" doesn't mean more Roberto Hernadez and Aaron Fultz type reclamation projects.

How about the Anthony Reyes pickup?

He's been very solid in his 2 starts for the Tribe. It'd be great if he could fill in the middle of the rotation next season. I think he can easily be a #4, possibly even the #3 pitcher next year behind Lee and Carmona. Anything can happen, but what a great acquisition that would be for the organization.

Lee, Carmona, Reyes, Laffey...then it gets tough (heck even the last two aren't locks). Jeremy Sowers, David Huff, Jake Westbrook (later in the year), Adam Miller (if healthy) or a FA signing are all possibilities to slide into the rotation. Not half bad, IMO.

Bullpen, well, uh...who the fuck knows?

Cleveland Indians' winning streak ends at five with loss to Baltimore Orioles

Thursday, August 14, 2008 Paul Hoynes
Plain Dealer Reporter

The Indians made Jeremy Guthrie rich. What they didn't make him was a starting pitcher. Wednesday night, he showed them what they're missing.
Guthrie pitched seven impressive innings and Baltimore ended the Indians' five-game winning streak with a 6-1 victory at Progressive Field. Guthrie has won four straight starts and seven of his past 11.
The Indians made Guthrie their first-round draft pick out of Stanford in 2002. They signed him to a franchise-record $4 million deal - $3 million signing bonus and a four-year $1 million big-league contract.

Indians to get look at pitcher Zach Jackson

Thursday, August 14, 2008 Joe Maxse
Plain Dealer Reporter

A change of scenery never hurts.
That's how Zach Jackson approached the news of being traded from the Milwaukee Brewers to the Indians on July 7 as part of the CC Sabathia deal. That will be his mind-set tonight when the left-hander starts against the Baltimore Orioles after being called up from Class AAA Buffalo to replace traded Paul Byrd in the Tribe's starting rotation.
"I'm very excited just to start over halfway through the season," said Jackson, who had spent most of the last three seasons at Class AAA Nashville. "I look at it as a blessing in disguise with new scenery.

Cleveland Indians' Masa Kobayashi appears to be worn out

Thursday, August 14, 2008
Masa Kobayashi appears to be out of gas.
Manager Eric Wedge wouldn't come right out and say that, but he did admit the Japanese right-hander is tired.
Kobayashi has made 50 appearances and thrown 49 2/3 innings this season for the Indians. Last year with the Chiba Lotte Marines in Japan, Kobayashi made 49 appearances and threw 47 1/3 innings for the season.

Reyes basically is auditioning the rest of the year. He's looked decent in his two starts, but I'll withhold judgement until I see more. Lee and Carmona are the sure things. I kinda expect them to sign another veteran middle of the rotation guy like Byrd. The other two spots will likely be filled by Laffey (if he can pull himself back together), Sowers (who has improved from dreadful to somewhat mediocre his past few starts) and a couple other youngsters. I'll be shocked if we see Jke at all next year and I really think Miller's future is in the pen.

I'm pretty limited in my knowledge of Miller, but he sounds like a perfect guy for the penn with all of our troubles. An injury prone starter, with good stuff should be looked at as a relief pitcher.

Did he get re-injured again this year? The last I heard he was having blister problems which was at the beginning of the year.

He is continuing to have some type of problem with his fingers. I don't think he has even tried to throw again after he was shut down at Buffalo. I have to agree though that if he does come back he will be bullpen material was all the injuries that he has had.

Another night of bullpen misery: Orioles score 8 in eighth to coast past Tribe, 11-6

by Paul Hoynes Thursday August 14, 2008, 11:31 PM

Chuck Crow/The Plain DealerJhonny Peralta slumps to the dirt after taking a Daniel Cabrera pitch off his left hand in the third inning of Thursday night Orioles-Indians game at Progressive Field. Peralta eventually left the game and had X-rays, which were negative.

Life isn't easy for the worst bullpen in the American League. There are so many problems and so few solutions.
Masa Kobayashi is seemingly out of gas with six weeks left in the season. Rafael Perez, manager Eric Wedge's only effective reliever for the last two months, may have finally said "no mas." Rafael Betancourt might not resurface until next season.
Then there is Eddie Mujica, who helped engineer the biggest inning by an Indians opponent this season in Baltimore's 11-6 victory Thursday night at Progressive Field. The Indians entered the eighth with the score tied, 3-3. When Perez and Mujica finished the inning, the Orioles scored eight runs to earn a split in the four-game series.

Indians Insider: At last, Hafner's back in the swing

by Paul Hoynes Thursday August 14, 2008, 10:29 PM

Chuck Crow/The Plain DealerTravis Hafner is back taking batting practice, and hopes to rejoin the Indians in September.

Pronk visited Pronkville.
No, he didn't walk up to the second deck in right field at Progressive Field and dust off a seat. Travis Hafner actually hit a ball up there.
It wasn't in a game and first base coach Luis Rivera threw the pitch, but the way this season has gone for Hafner, he'll take it.
Hafner, on the disabled list with a strained right shoulder since May 30, took batting practice on the field Thursday afternoon for the first time since his injury. When he hit the ball into the second deck with a smooth, fluid swing, hitting coach Derek Shelton, standing on the side of the batting cage, cracked a joke. Hafner laughed and dropped his bat.
"I told Shelton, "I'm ready, activate me,'" said Hafner.
Hafner said if all goes well this week, he could go on a rehab assignment next week. The goal would be to rejoin the Indians sometime in September.

The sooner this season ends the better I will feel. I sure hope Shapiro makes some pretty big moves during the off-season or it will be another long season next year. We cannot count on rookie players. They need to go out and find some quality free agents. Bring on the Browns!
