Indians Tidbits (2008 season)

It can't be stated how remarkable a season he is having. 17-2 on an absolute shit team. Wow...such a shame it's being wasted on this horse abortion of a season. I don't have the numbers, but I can only imagine what his record would be on a team with a just average bullpen, yet alone a good one. I can remember at least three leads of his the "bullpen" has blown...chances are there's more.

Trumped by an ace: Red-hot Angels stymied as Tribe's Lee captures 17th victory

by Joe Maxse Friday August 15, 2008, 11:08 PM

Chuck Crow/The Plain DealerCliff Lee has the game ball and a big hug from first baseman Ryan Garko after getting the final out of Friday's 3-2 victory over the Los Angeles Angels at Progressive Field. Lee's 17 wins tie Arizona's Brandon Webb for tops in the major leagues.
Cliff Lee has done so many things right this season, not even facing a dominating first-place club was going to go wrong.

Cleveland's Cy Young Award candidate proved his worth once again as he went the distance in the Indians' 3-2 win against the American League West-leading Los Angeles Angels on Friday night at Progressive Field.
The Angels came to town with the best record in baseball (75-44) and the top mark (18-6) since the All-Star break. Add a one in each of the loss columns.
Lee improved to an AL-best 17-2 (2.43 ERA) as he gave up eight hits, while striking out six and walking two. It was the 18th time in 24 starts he has allowed two or fewer runs and his third complete game of the season.
He benefited from a pitcher's best friend, the double play, as the Angels hit into four of them. They killed potential rallies in the fifth through eighth innings.

Indians Insider: With a final flurry (and cash), Tribe signs three more draft picks before deadline

by Joe Maxse Friday August 15, 2008, 9:00 PM

The Indians beat the deadline when it came to signing their top draft picks. They beat it to an estimated tune of $2.6 million in signing bonuses.
They announced the signing of No. 2 pick Trey Haley, No. 16 Glenn "T.J." House and No. 22 Bryce Stowell, all pitchers, before Friday's midnight deadline. The Tribe inked 30 of the 50 players selected in the June first-year player draft, including the top 16.
"Picking 29th, with no bonus picks, we knew we had to be creative," said Brad Grant, director of amateur scouting. "We felt we were getting talent way above [where they were picked] because of signability issues. We were substantially above our bonus budget."
Haley, 18, a right-handed pitcher from Nacogdoches, Texas, was ready to attend Rice University on a scholarship before the Indians convinced him to sign for an estimated $1.2 million. He went 8-2 with a 1.55 earned run average in 13 high school games, striking out 98 in 50 innings.

ESPN - Hargrove says he 'misspoke' about passion, wants to manage again - MLB

CLEVELAND -- Mike Hargrove wants another shot at managing in the major leagues.
A little over a year ago, Hargrove shocked baseball by walking away from the Seattle Mariners, becoming the first manager since 1900 to resign as his team was on an eight-game winning streak.

Mike Hargrove guided the Liberal Bee Jays to fourth place among 49 teams this week at the National Baseball Congress World Series.

A day before being inducted into the Cleveland Indians Hall of Fame, Hargrove said he'd like to give it another go.
I'd take him back.

a few things about the last week or so since i've been gone:

reyes can be a #4 or #5 starter on this team. we'll see how he finishes out the year. with byrd gone, laffey needs to find himself the rest of the year.

trading byrd for cash to be used to sign draft picks that fell in the draft because they were thought to be unsignable is one of the smarter moves made by this organization. the overall value they got for CC, Blake, and Byrd was good. this is shapiro's strong suit. however, i don't think he's done well in finding the coplementary pieces needed to make the jump from rebuilding to consistent contender.

ryan garko and andy marte both suck.

if AsCab gives an entire season of offensive production that is close to what he's done since being recalled, he can be the starting 2nd baseman anytime.

adam miller is going to pitch in the venezualan winter league this offseason. they are going to try him as a starter, and if he seems to have any problems, he's going to the pen. in reality, they are probably only using him as a starter to get him as many innings as possible.

this bullpen is a horse abortion. mujica had one good stretch where he looked servicable. he's a bum. captain hotdog is old and tired. perez is overworked and inconsistent. betancourt is a joke. give donnelly some innings to see if he still has the arm to produce.

Excellent insight. Hearing the guy who is in charge of the draft last night on STO really gave some insight into those signings.

The catcher that they got from the Dodgers for Blake is chairing the cover off of the ball in Kingston. Hopefully, he will progress through the farm system rapidly.

Agreed. He looked really good in his 1st outting, so-so in his last. He's basically auditioning for a spot next year and hopefully he takes advantage of it. Laffey needs to get back to the stud he was his first 8-10 starts. I don't know if it as a case of the league figuring him out or if it's just mental, but we need him big time.

Yep. I give Shapiro an "A" for his moves he's. Especially the Blake trade. Those are the kind of trades small market teams need to pull off to be competitive.

Fuck the both of 'em. Useless is a word that comes immediately to mind.

I was saying back in May when he couldn't hit a beachball that he needed to log some time in the minors to get his confidence back...thankfully, it looks like it helped. If he can continue to hit this way, hopefully he can become a solid #2 hitter.

Agreed. With the stuff he has, if he can stay healthy and master the mental part, he could be a nasty closer.

Like I said a couple days ago, if anybody has seen a worse bulppen, I'd like to see it. I remember the '03 BP and these guys make them look like the Nasty Boys. They allowed Lee to stay in and throw 117 pitches last night because these chumps can't be counted on to throw six pitches without giving up a run. Pathetic.

Hot corner: The Indians are waiting for Andy Marte to show them something with the bat.

"We still have to get more offensively from him," said Wedge. "He's really played well at third base. He's still not doing what we need him to do with the bat. We'll continue to look at him and see if we can figure it out."

Marte went 0-for-2 in Saturday's 4-3 loss to the Angels. Jamey Carroll pinch-hit for him with the bases loaded and two out in the seventh.

Marte is hitting .183 (30-for-164) with seven doubles, three homers and 10 RBI. Marte did not play well defensively in Saturday, but that was an exception.

HE'S A [censored]ING TURD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What the [censored]? How long is it going to take for these chimps to see that?

they know it. they are simply trying to make him servicable enough until wes hodges is ready, which is probably 2010. really, if they could just get marginal offensive production from him, he's decent enough defensively to be a one year stop-gap, if that's the route they are going to take.
