Cleveland Indians win a wild one against the Baltimore Orioles

The Indians cannot get out of their own way against teams in the American League Central, but they know how to beat those in the deeper East.
The Tribe improved to 16-8 against the East with a 13-8 victory over the Orioles on Monday night at Progressive Field.
Asdrubal Cabrera doubled and homered as the Indians (53-64) won their fourth in a row.

Cleveland Indians reliever Brendan Donnelly pitches scoreless eighth inning in 13-8 win over Baltimore Orioles

Tuesday, August 12, 2008 Chris Herring
Plain Dealer Reporter

Even when all he could do was nothing, Indians reliever Brendan Donnelly tried his best to do something.
Recovering from Tommy John surgery, the right-hander, called up from Class AAA Buffalo, N.Y., last week, has managed to watch nearly every Tribe game this season to get an idea of the bullpen's shortcomings.
"If I missed one, I would use TiVo and watch it the next day," said the 37-year-old, who signed with the Indians in February. "You have a lot of time to kill when you're rehabbing because once you finish, there's nothing else you can really do."

Cleveland Indians pitcher Cliff Lee remarkably consistent

Tuesday, August 12, 2008 Dennis Manoloff
Plain Dealer Reporter

Pitcher Cliff Lee has been remarkably consistent with his left arm and tongue this season.
He keeps winning, then saying basically the same things afterward.
In building a 16-2 record, Lee repeatedly has talked about concerning himself with his next start and giving his team a chance to win. His tone is businesslike, his face largely expressionless.

Choo keeps Tribe on track in 13-8 win over Orioles
Tuesday, August 12, 2008
BY Mike Popovich
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

CLEVELAND Mired beyond October baseball's reach, it is a big stretch to compare the Indians and Orioles of this season to their successful predecessors who met in an epic 1997 ALCS.

A couple of bizarre things happened in that series. Based on Monday's game at Progressive Field, the best advice for anyone following this week's set may be to expect the unexpected.

The Tribe came away with a 13-8 victory over the O's in front of 23,408. In a game that had all the earmarks of a Cleveland rout during the first few innings, the Indians came from behind with three runs in the seventh and three more in the eighth to post their fourth straight win.

Ben Francisco, Ryan Garko, Andy Gonzalez, Sal Fasano and Asdrubal Cabrera drove in two runs apiece for the Indians, who pounded out 13 hits on the night.

"We got up early, then had to battle back late," Garko said. "It's a good team win."

Red Sox, with pitching concerns, acquire Byrd from Indians

Associated Press
Updated: August 12, 2008, 5:02 PM ET

BOSTON

The Boston Red Sox acquired pitcher Paul Byrd from Cleveland on Tuesday, hoping to boost a rotation hurt by an injury to Tim Wakefield and the struggles of Clay Buchholz.

The Red Sox will send either a player to be named or cash to the Indians.

The 37-year-old Byrd is 7-10 with a 4.53 ERA in his 14th season. But since the All-Star break, he has won all four of his starts and has a 1.24 ERA.

Bye Bye Byrdie

If they were going to trade Birdie, I would have rather seen him traded before the deadline. I guess they couldn't find any takers which is sort of hard to believe. I wonder if the Indians will take a player or want cash. I know what Dolan wants.

At least they didn't traded him to the White Sox who need pitching also.

He wasn't pitching all that great before the deadline. He got hot just before and has continued after. He's an older back of the rotation guy, so he doesn't have much market value.

From one of the articles Grad linked...
Customarily, the phrase refers to how many pitches a pitcher delivers before he becomes ineffective or fatigued. Regarding Mujica and Betancourt, pitch count indicates the amount of damage that can be done with the fewest pitches.

Truer words have never been spoken.

Not a bad read. I'm not too certain LaPorta will be on the roster next April. He'll probably need to log some time in AAA first, but if he has a good showing there, wouldn't be surprised to see him in the lineup by June. I think Hodges has as good a shot as anybody at 3B next spring. I'm not sure we'll see Victor at 1B fulltime. I really think Trevor Crowe will get a long look in the OF and as a possibility to leadoff allowing Grady to slide down into the 3 hole. Obviously, anything we get from Pronk is a bonus in my mind at this point. :(

7-5 win after Kobayashi nearly blew it. Sowers was his usual mediocre self allowing 4 over 6+ innings. Thank God for Raffy Perez, otherwise that "bullpen" would be an abomination, well, even more of an abomination.

Asdrubal has been hitting much better since being brought back up. Really happy to see that.

Tribe trades Byrd to Boston Move to save Indians almost $2 million
By Sheldon Ocker
Beacon Journal sports writer

Published on Wednesday, Aug 13, 2008

CLEVELAND: C.C. Sabathia: gone. Casey Blake: gone. Paul Byrd: gone. The Indians' house has been cleaned.
General Manager Mark Shapiro has traded every viable player (players on the way out who have value to an opponent) on the roster, which means tryouts for next year can continue without the distraction of further deal making.
''I got to the ballpark at about 2:30 and was walking around the clubhouse at a quarter to three,'' Byrd said. ''[Pitching coach] Carl Willis said, 'Put your shirt back on and go see [manager] Eric [Wedge].'
''I felt kind of ambushed, because I hadn't heard that anybody wanted me, nothing about the Red Sox. It's kind of an emotional moment.''
The benefit to the Tribe is not the player to be named, which doesn't have to be announced until Jan. 15, 2009. In fact, the Indians might take a token amount of cash from the Red Sox instead.
''It's not really about the player we get back,'' Shapiro said. ''It's about allowing us to make decisions concerning next season by seeing additional guys. It's also about getting Paul to a contender.''
Most important to Shapiro is the cash he will save, money that can be used to pay players next year or offset what was spent in the June draft, which apparently went over budget. The Red Sox will pay the remainder of Byrd's $7.5 million salary, about $1.98 million.
