Indians Tidbits (2008 season)

What do you all think about dealing Cliff Lee as well? After last season it's pretty clear to me that he made a deal with the devil and I'm not sure he can duplicate this season. What about dealing him while he's hot?

You don't deal Cliff Lee. And he has duplicated this season. Last year was his only bad year. And from what everyone said is he was injured and it messed up his mechanics and that was why he sucked so bad.

But really you need Lee next year (especially without CC). We still have him signed for next year and you never know. What if Martinez & Hafner come back from injury and are 100% and then next year they regain their old form? We are not that far from being a competive team next year.

I don't really know. I'm torn on this trade. I don't think anybody else has a prospect on LaPorta's level that they'd be willing to offer, but he should have gotten more that just one good prospect. After all, a prospect is just that...a prospect.
NFL, I have been saying this over and over and you have put me down every time I have said it. They do not call these guys prospects for nothing. I think I would have waited a little longer to see what other teams who are trying to make a run would have to offer closer to July 31. I really don't care how good Milwaukee's AA team is until those guys can prove themselves in the major leagues they are still called prospects. Also, Milwaukee just did not get a 3 month rental that also got two #1 draft choices next year. The Indians once had a prospect who was supposedly the best prospect in the minor leagues. His name was Richie Scheinblum. He didn't know out very well. I don't care if they do throw in Green or the OF I still think the Indians pulled the trigger too fast.

Well, when you wait 40 years for a title, what's 4 more years?
Probably another 40 years but at least we didn't fork over all the money that we had in free agency only to come up a little bit short life the motor city:slappy: boys.

dealing for a starter is different. they have decreasing value as the trade deadline approaches. the difference between sabathia starting 12-14 games for the brewers and starting as few as 10 is pretty big in a pennant race. he's going to start tomorrow night. the brewers wanted the deal done, so they ponied up the players, bottom line. cleveland wasn't going to get a better deal by waiting.

So if the Indians waited, who did you think they would be able to get??? The Indians were not going to get a proven major leaguer in the deal no matter how long they waited. So whoever the Indians waited to get would have been a prospect.

And LaPorta is the best prospect the Indians would have gotten period! And he is maybe a year and a half away from the big leagues which is also the best we would have gotten.

The Brewers will get two sandwich picks when CC signs somewhere else... but the current rate/bonuses of first round picks is getting ludicrous...

The NFL commissioner has this SOooo right... the money should go to proven talent.. not fresh picks in which you're betting they'll ever make it

Good point. I had never thought about it in that regard however I am trying to remember when Col?n was traded to Montr?al. I just hate to see this team get completely dismantled again. I don't think there would be in the sense in trading Lee this season. I noted that some of the other guys brought that out. If they are going to trade him, it probably would be best to wait until the off-season or Spring-training. I saw where LA was looking at Pittsburgh for a shortstop so I don't know who would take JP. I wouldn't mind getting rid of Garko. We have a glutton of first baseman in the minors. The way we are going we might as well give them some playing time. The same with Marte for heavens sake or my sake:(

Colon was traded in early July.

But yeah, would love to trade JP too. Seems like the Indians want Cabrera to be their shortstop and let Barfield try to come back and be their second baseman. Then another reason they want Green to try 2B to see if he can be their future there.

But I agree, Shapiro needs to sit down and determine who are their future players and if they are not in the plans to see what we can get now so we can turn around ASAP.

there is a major misconception about the Colon trade. brandon phillips was the cornerstone of that trade, cliff lee and grady sizemore were throw-ins.

really, in terms of prospect status, lee and sizemore = green/cain/brantley and bryson. so, the deals are somewhat similar.

Actually Lee wasn't really a throw-in. Sizemore was more of the green/cain/bentley type. But Lee would probable be more like the SS we were trying to get from Milwaukee.

Just times have changed and that Colon trade happened under such special circumstances it won't happen again anytime soon. While Phillips was the "LaPorta" of the deal, Lee was just as big of a piece as the deal at the time was Phillips & Lee... and then some project guy named Grady.

Then again that is also why Indians fans are jaded on this trade it seems and wanted more. The Colon trade spoiled them and really those deals don't happen anymore.

LaPorta's agent is Scott Boras and that my friends is not a good beginning.:(

Hmmm, didn't know that. Good to know. Thankfully we don't have to worry about that for about 6-7 years. (And probable because of Boras I doubt the Indians would start his "free agent" clock any sooner than they have to) So expect him not to make the big league club til the middle of next year at the earliest. But then again that "no player going to arbitration" streak might end.

Milwaukee has 2 big-time 3B prospects, so why couldn't they get Green in the deal?

Actually, Milwaukee doesn't have any legit 3B prospects if they part with Green. Mat Gamel projects to be a corner outfielder or 1st baseman on account he's butcher (something like 50+ errors in a season and a half). We've had somewhat of a void at the major league level and are always hoping foolishly that we can convert big time hitters with no experience to the somewhat challenging hot corner. I'm referring to guys like Corey Hart, Ryan Braun, etc.

Green is definitely fills a "need" for the Crew (unless their 1st round pick Lawrie can project to 3rd), however his agent has been very ambiguous about his involvement in the trade, leading me to believe HE IS ON THE PTBNL LIST, from which the Indians will have to choose.

Anyone know what the deal is with the two prospects we got other than LaPorta? Everyone is talking about them like they suck, but what kind of potential might they have? I personally think that you can't declare this trade as a bust until we see what happens with LaPorta and the others.

On another note, I say we shouldn't trade all of our guys, but trade away some because we still have talent on this team. We just need to find out about some of the younger guys we have. I would say Peralta is expendable... get what you can for Byrd/Blake/Borowski and then give Marte his last shot at 3rd with Blake gone and see if the guy has any talent. If he shows some skills, then maybe he could be the answer next year although i doubt it...

Edit: Also has anyone heard a timetable for the PTBN?

Ah yes, you can always count on Tibor for a throw away post like this, but I'll bite. What do you propose they should have done all-knowing one? Held onto him and lost him in FA? :roll1:
