Indians Tidbits (2008 season)

Anyone know what the deal is with the two prospects we got other than LaPorta? Everyone is talking about them like they suck, but what kind of potential might they have? I personally think that you can't declare this trade as a bust until we see what happens with LaPorta and the others.

On another note, I say we shouldn't trade all of our guys, but trade away some because we still have talent on this team. We just need to find out about some of the younger guys we have. I would say Peralta is expendable... get what you can for Byrd/Blake/Borowski and then give Marte his last shot at 3rd with Blake gone and see if the guy has any talent. If he shows some skills, then maybe he could be the answer next year although i doubt it...

Zach Jackson is a lefty who throws in the low 90's with a decent curve and a changeup I believe. We acquired him from Toronto in the Lyle Overbay-Dave Bush trade. At that point he was top 5 or so in their system I want to say. In his stints with the big club he was hardly terrible but just got lost in a numbers game. The Crew has a lot of depth in their rotation so he never got a complete opportunity to shine. He has a bulldog mentality, reminiscent of Chris Capuano (as is his stuff), so he still has some promise left. He just turned 25 recently. It's possible he just had difficulty getting motivated to pitch after spending his 4th straight season in AAA. He has followed a similar career path as fellow lefty Dana Eveland, formerly of the Brewers, did. Another guy who got lost in the shuffle and ended up being a throw-in with Doug Davis in the Estrada deal. This season he has a 3.42 ERA in 17 starts with the Athletics. I was always an Eveland fan. Do I think he'll be that much of a steal? Not quite, but I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up as a mid 4's #4 type starter.

Ah yes, you can always count on Tibor for a throw away post like this, but I'll bite. What do you propose they should have done all-knowing one? Held onto him and lost him in FA? :roll1:

Why would they lose him? Oh, that's right, the team that can't win in 40+ years hasn't figured out that keeping top of the line talent is the way to win it all.

Another rebuilding year in Cleveberg. :slappy: :slappy:

apparently some people thought the brewers were going to hand over their entire farm system to cleveland for a 3 month rental.

1. no other club was willing to put up a prospect as highly touted as laporta, at a position that cleveland so desperately needs.

2. the brewers obviously don't have the clout to resign sabathia as a FA. that reduces the selling price because it's not as beneficial to them to have that negotiating edge with him during the rest of the season.

3. deals like the colon trade just don't happen anymore. it's a thing of the past.

4. if taylor green is the 4th player in the deal, which seems to be the prevailing wisdom, the deal is actually pretty good.

5. looking at who was actually in the trade, it seems fairly obvious that other moves are probably forthcoming.

Why do you think other moves are forthcoming?

Ironically, You may get better value for Peralta given that he has some tiem left on his deal and is reasonably cheap...

NFL, I have been saying this over and over and you have put me down every time I have said it. They do not call these guys prospects for nothing. I think I would have waited a little longer to see what other teams who are trying to make a run would have to offer closer to July 31. I really don't care how good Milwaukee's AA team is until those guys can prove themselves in the major leagues they are still called prospects. Also, Milwaukee just did not get a 3 month rental that also got two #1 draft choices next year. The Indians once had a prospect who was supposedly the best prospect in the minor leagues. His name was Richie Scheinblum. He didn't know out very well. I don't care if they do throw in Green or the OF I still think the Indians pulled the trigger too fast.

Probably another 40 years but at least we didn't fork over all the money that we had in free agency only to come up a little bit short life the motor city:slappy: boys.

Eh, everyone was a prospect... some guys make it, some don't.

I for one am kind of happy about LaPorta.... (though predictably annoyed aobut the pitchers, as for the PTBN, it had better be a position player with power.)

And here's why.

He's not Grady Sizemore, Coco Crisp, Franlin Gutierrez, Ben Francisco, Torii Hunter, Jacque Jones, Trevor Crowe, or some other goddammed 5 "tooler."

Yes, I threw some Twins in there.

Why? That's what Shapiro wants his outfield to be.... or wanted.

Problem with Shapiro is that he is the anti-John Hart. He wants starting pitching, speed, and flexible multi-tool players that can play multiple positions...

And, that's fine to some degree, I do like an athletic team... but... shit... we only need so many guys who can hit .260 and hit 20 hrs and steal 20 bases (if Wedge would ever let them.)

But, we need guys who can rake...

I've come (much to my chagrin) to appreciate the many talents of Casey Blake... but... he's not a cornerstone player. Can you win with him at 3rd? Sure, but you need pop, oh I don't know, in your corner outfield spots and at 1st base?

Juice rumors aside.... if we can ssume pronk has been hurt for a while... and... may come back and be a reasonbly good hitter... and Victor, with Sizmore, I think you only need to find one more professional hitter and you might be fine with some younger guys elsewhere...

Luckily, since everyone not in the equation above pretty much sucks, you have a lot of flexibility. (Hey, the multi-tool player thing gives you something.) (Even if you disagree on Pronk, we're stuck with him.)

I'm not sold on anyone at this point... I mean, I don't have a lot of reason to beleive that Ben Francisco is anything more than the next Jody Gerut. And Ryan Garko is a slightly better version of Ben Broussard.

I do tend to thing that those guys are a bit better, but need protection.

(If Peralta were to be traded, I don't have a problem going into next year with Cabrera at SS and a rent a 2b depeding on Barfield... at least we'll have plus up the middle defense-- and if we're reduced to 2b shopping, lets find a damned leadoff hitter, please)

Bottom line is, we need some mashers, Laporta appears to be one, and I think we'll see him in Cleveland soon, too.

NOt so worried about the Starting pitching, we have arms there.... that Shapiro has actually seen to... at least in quantity.

I'd also like to see the aforementioned Wes Hdges sooner rather than later, too.

But, while I'd say no one player is safe, no need to trash the whole thing right now.

Bryson is where it is at...he's the other key player in the deal.

1. LaPorta
2. (PTBNL/Green)
3. Bryson
....
....
....
....
4. Johnson

I hear great things about Bryson's slider. He strikes out a lot and is being looked at as a reliever down the road, possibly a closer (oh how the Indians need one of those.)

From a Indians' fan point of view how can the Twins lose two 20 game winners and probably their best outfielder and still be in contention. We lose Hafner and Martinez two months into the season along with Westbrook and Carmona and we are in last-place in our division. I have always heard good things about our farm system and player development and I guess my question is what the hell happened:huh:

I guess my other question is how would you define the Indians. Most teams are either power hitting teams with excellent pitching or a speed team with excellent fielding and guys that create runs. This team even with Hafner and Martinez does I really have a definition.

For one, Ron Gardenhire is one of the best managers in baseball...we have Eric Wedge.

Minnesota is awesome at scouting/development, most of their roster is homegrown. We used to have a good farm system a few years ago, but years of poor scouting/bad drafting have left it depleted.

Maybe even Victor?

Link

"They've had their scouts out looking at other clubs' farm systems, Triple-A, Double-A, even Class A," one NL executive says. "They've had guys out looking at the farm systems of contenders looking to add players -- the Cardinals, the Cubs, the Phillies, Milwaukee.

"Their scouts are just going to keep going until they get pulled back."
The Indians are actively shopping starter Paul Byrd, according to sources, who say they might also deal infielder Casey Blake and reliever Rafael Betancourt and might even discuss injured catcher Victor Martinez.

I don't write this stuff. I just deliver it:)

I'll be shocked if anybody wants Byrd or Betancourt, they've been awful this year. I'm not crazy about the idea of trading Victor, but if the right offer comes along, who knows. I expect Blake to be moved and would love to unload Peralta as well.

Update on the PTBNL: Appears it is now between OF Michael Brantley and 3B/2B Taylor Green.

Brantley is a very interesting prospect who has been tearing up Double-A ball. Just turned 21. He has Great speed (25 steals already down in Huntsville). Batting .324 on the year with 15 doubles, 4 HR, 34 RBI. 39 BB compared to 18 K's. Everything looks pretty good to me. I guess some project him as a top of the lineup type of player. Baseball America said he has the best plate-discipline in the Brewers system.

On the other hand, Green appears to be a great looking prospect in his own right, especially at a position of need (2B) for the Tribe.. Brantley is a closer to impacting the big club sooner compared to Green. I think the Indians are in a great position and can't go wrong with either.

Agreed, I was wanting one other good prospect in the deal and it appears it's gonna happen, so color me satisfied. I'm excited about LaPorta's power potential, particularly without knowing if the old Pronk will ever return. Green is a good looking INF prospect that could allow Asdrubal to move to SS and Brantley could eventually be the guy that allows Grady to slide down to the middle of the lineup. Hopefully one of the pitchers can contribute down the line too.

seems Crowe is similar prospect to Brantley, so it would be nice to see Trevor continue to develop so the Indians don't need Brantley and can instead get the 2B they need.
I hope so. Crowe has looked good at every level, hopefully that continues. He'd be an ideal leadoff man because he's fast, doesn't K too much and gets on base (.325 BA/.415 OBP in Akron). Hodges is hitting pretty well down there too (.307-10-69). We need these two to continue to develop and become legit MLB players badly.
