Indians Tidbits (2008 season)

Either that, or with all their injuries they just aren't very good.

I never like to see the "team quit" comments.

Well, watching the games, there sure isn't much fire in the team. That may just be that there has been so much roster turnover that there is little-to-no chemistry. Look at that current roster...it's pretty much a glorified AAA club.

In the last 2 weeks this team has lost to

Bronson Arroyo 5-7 6.19 ERA .316 BAA

Barry Zito 3-11 5.91 ERA .313 BAA

Jorge De La Rosa 2-4 6.23 ERA

Jeff Francis 3-7 5.67 ERA

And Greg Rynolds 2-5 5.68 ERA
It's like I said, I'm convinced they think that higher ERA means better pitcher and they're intimidated by these scrubs.

Fucking Jeremy Sowers. :slappy:

3 IP, 6 H, 8 R, 8 ER, 2 BB, 2 SO, 2 HR....season ERA: 7.53

Please ship his ass back to Buffalo, that scrub has no place in the major leagues. :shake:

 no kidding, he was also sporting a 1.80 WHIP and a .351 BAA before this game.......

It's like they expect him to suddenly revert back to his 2006 form before the league figured out he was nothing more than a garbage baller. Much like they keep waiting for Andy Marte to finally figure out how to hit, hmmmmm.....

Mujica miraculously gets through a scoreless inning before Mastny serves up a meatball to Swisher. When and why did Mastny find his way back on to the roster?

They've whiffed 10 times through 6 innings...man, these guys are just a terrible baseball team.

Lot's of laughing going on around here.

I'm not laughing.

Not anymore anyways.

I expect this team to lose every time they take the field.

It's sad to see what has happened to this squad after last years success.

It's a major cop-out to blame injuries. Even when semi-healthy this team struggled. Maybe not this bad, but bad enough to realize this wasn;t going to be a good season.

Who knows what the future holds now??? Are our scouts and front office as good as Tampa/Florida??? If they are, we compete next year. Otherwise, who knows???

well, they thought Andy Marte and Jeremy Sowers were good (even though they probably still think this) so no

I haven;t been very impressed lately either. I hope I am wrong though.

Make no mistake about thi steam and what is happening though, upper managementknows this season is a waste....players are being held back, told to take extra rest, use this season as time to evaluate talent, etc.

This season could not have gone any worse. Awful off-season, best player becomes a free agent at end of season, injuries, poor production from established players.

There are a million things to point too. This is just a bad team. Bad teams have proven you can become good in 1 year though. We have a a nice nucleus of talent, Shapiro needs to do his job and make something of it.

We'll see...

It's pretty hard to be optimistic about a quick turnaround. The farm system is pretty weak, and with Shapiro's track record in FA, it's hard to believe he'll make enough of a splash this winter to get them back into contention. On top of that, Pronk's future is up in the air and Victor isn't a guarantee he'll be back to his old self when he comes back.

Grady, Fausto and Laffey are a good young nucleus to build around. Hopefully Victor and Pronk are back to their old selves when they return. Francisco looks like a good, if not great, corner OF. Hopefully Asdrubal can bounce back and be a solid 2B/SS. The rest needs to be rebuilt. The bullpen needs a total overhaul...hopefully Adam Miller's future is at closer and he succeeds. Dealing guys like C.C., Byrd and (possibly) Lee could help restock the bare farm system somewhat, but I think we're staring a total rebuilding job like back in 2002 in the face.

Two to three years is a minimum timeframe to field a competitive team again IMO.

Indians' pitching flaws exposed by White Sox Sowers' mound sins provide Chicago with a lead too large to squander
By Sheldon Ocker
Beacon Journal sportswriter

Published on Tuesday, Jul 01, 2008
CHICAGO: Despite losing two starting pitchers to injury this season, the Indians have maintained a rotation that not only has been stable but also often excellent.
That might be changing. In the first day of an eight-game trip that probably will determine whether the Tribe can become a factor in the Central Division race, Jeremy Sowers allowed the White Sox to build an insurmountable lead and hold on for a 9-7 win at U.S. Cellular Field on Monday night.
Sowers not only yielded eight runs and six hits, he also lasted only three innings. He committed three mortal pitching sins: giving up walks that came back to haunt him, getting beaten by the home-run ball and failing to finish the job when he had two outs.
''I'd like to see him command the ball better,'' manager Eric Wedge said. ''That's his game. You can't work from behind in the count up here and then come in with it. He has to throw the ball where he wants to.''

Tribe recalls Mastny; Elarton goes home Roster change gives Buffalo pitcher another chance
By Sheldon Ocker
Beacon Journal sportswriter

Published on Tuesday, Jul 01, 2008
CHICAGO: The Indians made an unanticipated roster move Monday, recalling right-hander Tom Mastny from Buffalo and placing Scott Elarton on the restricted list.
Elarton flew here from Cleveland with the team Sunday night, but asked to leave the club Monday and returned to Cleveland.
''There's not much I can say about it,'' manager Eric Wedge said. ''He has a personal issue that he has to take care of, and he headed out of here today.''
Players can remain on the restricted list indefinitely, and Wedge said he did not know when Elarton would rejoin the team.
Elarton's situation gives Mastny another chance to perform at the major-league level and possibly hang onto a roster spot (possibly Elarton's) with the Tribe. He spent two brief stints with the big-league club this season, from April 15 through May 11 and again June 2-4.
