Indians Tidbits (2008 season)

was anyone left on the bench to pinch hit for Shoppach? I followed the game on yahoo sports, and knew the game was over as soon as Shoppach came to the plate.
Not anybody worth trotting out there, that's for sure. Wedge blew his wad by starting his "go to" PH Marte tonight who promtly went 0-2 sending his average tumbling into the .130's.

My brother was in the room, and I said the Indians are about to lose again...Shoppach is going to strike out. Sure enough.....
They're on the bad side of the Hits/K ration nearly every game...7/10 tonight. They're just a horribly undisciplined bunch.

Everey time I get my hopes up even a little, we go and suck. If this team can just win series, they could get back into it, but dropping the first to the Giants is just demoralizing.
I haven't seen any real reason for hope since the 1st week of the season. They were a bad team before all the injuries, now they're one of the worst teams in baseball. Likely losing 4 straight series to the dregs of the NL hammers it home.

What an uninspired, terrible team. It's easy to get pissed at Betancourt, but where the hell are the bats?
Agreed. Story of the season. The best bats are hurt and weren't even producing when they were playing anyway. The best hitter on this team right now aside from our miscast leadoff hitter is Casey Blake. That says a lot of the state of this team.

How frustrating it must be for C.C. when he can hit a 440 foot bomb and the regulars can't hit there way out of a paper bag.

So frustrating.....wherever C.C. is shipped too, I'm rooting for.
Agreed. He deserves to play for a winner, and this team is a loooooooong way off from being that again.

Unfortunately I got talked into going to the game on Saturday night against Cincy with my sister and her husband and a few of our friends. I bet we couldn't give the tickets away if we wanted to

EDIT: If it wasn't for the fact we have a tee time on Saturday afternoon I don't think I would waste the gas up to Cleveland just to see these bums play

For Omar Vizquel, Cleveland "something really different" and special

Wednesday, June 25, 2008 Mike Peticca

Plain Dealer Reporter
The charge, barehanded snag and snappy throw. The pesky clutch hitting from both sides of the plate. The daring on the base paths.
Indians fans have all those images of Omar Vizquel.
But, more so, they have what Vizquel calls a "connection" that endures between him and those fans he thrilled for 11 splendid seasons.
"When I think of that, the relationship that you build up with the fans and the people who live here in Cleveland, it's something really different," Vizquel, now the San Francisco Giants' shortstop, said prior to the Giants' 3-2 win over the Indians at Progressive Field on Tuesday night.
"The people really know about the game. . . . I think it's part of a different community here, with all of the different teams and with all of the love for baseball."

Indians squeezed out by Vizquel, costly error
Bad throw by Shoppach leads to run in 8th, Omar's bunt brings another in 9th

CLEVELAND: Teams with the misfortune to be hitting-challenged invite disaster.
A club that struggles to score can win only by playing virtually mistake-free baseball. Pitchers are loathe to throw a fastball down the middle, and the defense must be as airtight as a tin of vacuum-packed coffee.
So it was with the Indians on Tuesday night at Progressive Field. Aaron Laffey pitched expertly but not perfectly, and the defense made a critical mistake as the Tribe lost 3-2 to the San Francisco Giants.
It's easy enough to blame Kelly Shoppach for giving up the lead run by throwing a ball into center field on an attempted steal in the eighth inning.
Rafael Betancourt walked Ray Durham with one out, and Randy Winn singled him to third. When Winn took off for second, Shoppach's throw bounced in front of the bag and rolled into center field, allowing Durham to score and Winn to take third.

Indians Insider: Shapiro, Wedge among game's best, says Tribe owner Dolan

Giants third baseman Jose Castillo (12) bounces off the railing along the box seats at Progressive Field but still catches a foul ball hit by the Indians' Shin-Soo Choo in the second inning Tuesday night. San Francisco catcher Bengie Molina backs up Castillo.Last week claimed three managers and one general manager. High expectations cost Mets manager Willie Randolph, Seattle GM Bill Bavasi and Mariners manager John McLaren their jobs. The same expectations, to a lesser degree, caused Toronto to fire manager John Gibbons.

In Cleveland, the expectations were as high, if not higher, than those carried by the Mets, Seattle and Toronto. The Indians won 96 games and came within one victory of the World Series last year.

Yet things remain calm in the Indians' executive offices at Progressive Field and in the manager's office in the clubhouse.

"It's been extremely frustrating so far," said Indians President Paul Dolan. "We had very high expectations for a team picked by many to reach the World Series. Clearly the season isn't over. The question is, can we compete for a World Series title? We're hampered by injuries to key players.

"Some won't return this year. Some will, but we don't know when."
While Dolan is frustrated, he's not blaming GM Mark Shapiro or manager Eric Wedge.

"We think we have the best management in the game," said Dolan. "Nothing has changed our opinion of that. We have the executive of the year [Shapiro] and the manager of the year [Wedge]. My opinion on that isn't going to change after a couple of months."

Shapiro, in a vote by his peers, was named the Sporting News Executive of the Year after last season. Wedge was voted AL Manger of the Year by the Baseball Writers Association of America.

They just love one another. Article also states that they are going to have to make a decision on C. C. pretty soon. It's about time they started thinking about something:(

The only player we really have is Hodges right now, who is playing pretty well in Akron, but I'd think he would be a September call-up at the earliest. We're really thin on the farm. Veteran journeymen are really all we have to fall back on right now unfortunately. At least Cabrera is tearing up Buffalo, so maybe he comes back up in a few weeks and you can slide Carroll in at 3B. Injuries and poor play have just decimated this team.

Absolutely correct--Hodges is still striking out WAY too much and needs to learn the strike zone better before he moves up. There is nobody else in the Tribe minors available right now to shove Marte aside. That's why the Tribe has been signing/trying out infielders from the waiver wire the past few weeks. 3B is a hard spot to fill right now throughout MLB.

I am convinced that Hodges is probably already way better than Andy Marte

but they dont need to rush him like they did Asdrubal Cabrera......

Present-day, mid-forties, Brook Jacoby would be better than Marte. :!

 Sowers Vs Zito tonight

I guess we can expect the offense to do nothing though, Zito's ERA is over 5.5
I will not watch the game tonight. Reading about it is bad enough especially when I read your posts. I thought reading the stuff on Cleveland.com was bad enough.
