Cleveland Indians get bad news from Travis Hafner, Fausto Carmona, Josh Barfield

Wednesday, June 18, 2008
Denver- Being on the disabled list is bad enough for an athlete, but things took a turn for the worse Tuesday for Travis Hafner, Fausto Carmona and Josh Barfield.
Hafner, who has been on the disabled list since May 30 with a sore right shoulder, will visit Dr. James Andrews today in Birmingham, Ala., to get a second opinion on his shoulder.
Carmona, who has been on the disabled list since May 24 with a strained left hip, threw a 50-pitch, three-inning simulated game at Class A Mahoning Valley in Niles, Ohio, on Monday. When he reported to Progressive Field on Tuesday, he complained of soreness in the hip.

Pronk: There are two ways to look at this: 1.) It sucks he may be out longer than initially thought, 2.) It could be confirmation that his woes can in fact be contributed to a physical condition as opposed to just losing his mojo. If he has to miss significant time as a means to getting the real Pronk back in 2009, I'm all for it.

Fausto: There's no positive spin on that. Hip problems can be a bitch for a pitcher to recover from. Hopefully it's not overly serious, but I definately don't want him rushed back. Also, hopefully the front office doesn't become too short-sighted when it comes to this season and decide to keep C.C. if Carmona is going to miss considerably more time than initially thought.
Barfield: Meh, there's far bigger concerns in the organization than a borderline 2B.

Marte isn't a ML 3B folks, or at least he won't be one here. Hopefully Ensberg can show something in AAA and eventually slide in there. He was an All-Star three years ago, so he has some ability. carroll has been solid at 2B, so just leave him there for the time being until Asdrubal can get his game back.

Was Ensberg in the Mitchell report? If he wasn't, he should have been.

Well, they're doing their best to make another scrub look like a worldbeater tonight. :!

Jeff Francis and his 5.49 ERA mowing 'em down.

yea

the pitching staff is making below average second basemen Jeff Baker look like a worldbeater as well

 no kidding, how much longer is he going to have to hit under .200 for management to realize that he sucks?

.200? You're giving him too much credit. His BA is currently a robust .149...

As for management coming to any sort of realization as to how badly he sucks, remember, they kept Michael Rouse and his < .120 BA on the roster until (I believe) August last season.

Tribe takes a rocky fall

Thursday, June 19, 2008Paul Hoynes
Plain Dealer Reporter
Denver- Before the Indians left home for a six-game in terleague trip, they completed a 4-2 homestand and looked good doing it. They scored five or more runs four times and had 10 or more hits four times.
They seemed well prepared to take on the pitching-challenged Rockies at hitter-friendly Coors Field. Think again.
Lefty Jeff Francis and center fielder Willy Taveras proved too much for the Indians on Wednesday night. Francis, who had won only two games in his first 14 starts, threw six innings and Taveras used his speed on offense and defense to beat the Tribe, 4-2.

Carmona not ready to return

Thursday, June 19, 2008Paul Hoynes
Plain Dealer Reporter
Denver- Last year, the Indians won the AL Central as much with their depth and farm system as with C.C. Sabathia's 19 victories and Joe Borowski's 45 saves. While the White Sox, Tigers and Twins had problems filling holes caused by injury or poor performances, the Indians always had another sandbag at the ready to stop a leak.
This year, they are just about sandbagged out.
They received more bad news Wednesday when right-hander Fausto Carmona's return from a strained left hip stalled. Lonnie Soloff, Indians head athletic trainer, said Carmona will be "shut down" for three days and then re-examined over the weekend after an MRI on Wednesday showed there is still inflammation in the left hip.

Tribe draft pick leads Cardinal

Thursday, June 19, 2008 Eric Olson

Associated Press
Omaha, Neb.- Sean Ratliff homered and Cord Phelps, the Indians' third-round draft pick two weeks ago, tripled in Stanford's four-run fifth inning, and the Cardinal ousted top-seeded Miami (Fla.) from the College World Series with an 8-3 victory Wednesday night.
The Cardinal (41-23-2) advanced to the Bracket 1 finals against Georgia, needing to beat the Bulldogs twice to return to the best-of-three championship round for the second time since 2003.
Starter Danny Sandbrink and reliever Erik Davis held the Hurricanes' potent offense in check. Miami failed to join the 1999 squad as the only No. 1 national seeds to win the College World Series.
