Indians Tidbits (2008 season)

Fitful night for Tribe at Coors Field as Rockies roll to blowout victory Outfielders have tough time in spacious park
By Sheldon Ocker
Beacon Journal sportswriter

Published on Wednesday, Jun 18, 2008
DENVER: By the sixth inning, you knew it wasn't the Indians' night.
That's when the Tribe loaded the bases with nobody out with a chance to crawl back into a game they trailed 5-1. But Ryan Garko struck out, and Colorado Rockies' shortstop Omar Quintanilla made a diving snag of Shin-Soo Choo's wicked line drive and turned it into a double play to end the inning.
The Rockies went on to win easily, 10-2, Tuesday night at Coors Field.
Coors Field was part of the visitors' problem. Indians outfielders couldn't figure out where to play in the vast outfield stretches of the mile-high ballpark, where the ball carries in the light, warm air.
If they played deep, the Rockies hit the ball in front of them, if they played shallow, balls went sailing over their heads.

Yankees not likely to trade for Sabathia Indians will have plenty of suitors, hefty price tag if they decide to deal Cy Young Award winner
By Ken Davidoff
Newsday

Published on Wednesday, Jun 18, 2008
NEW YORK: It appears that baseball's trade-deadline enthusiasts might get their wish. But don't expect the New York Yankees to emerge as the winners of the C.C. Sabathia sweepstakes.
''Although we don't comment on individual players, it's prudent for us to do due diligence to be buyers or sellers,'' Indians General Manager Mark Shapiro told Newsday on Monday, ''so that if an opportunity presents itself, we can execute an intelligent trade.''
In other words, the Indians have begun scouting organizations that have expressed an interest in Sabathia, or that have the necessary supply of young players, or both. The Yankees are one of those teams, as ESPN's Peter Gammons reported Sunday. So are the Boston Red Sox, Chicago Cubs and Los Angeles Dodgers.

Cleveland Indians lose to Colorado Rockies

Wednesday, June 18, 2008Paul Hoynes
Plain Dealer Reporter
Denver -- This was the matchup that In dians fans everywhere wanted to see in October. Their team had a 3-1 lead over Boston in the ALCS. The Rockies were stuck in idle after winning the NLCS.
It never happened because the Indians blew the big lead, and the Red Sox swept the Rockies to win their second World Series title in four years. Tuesday night, the Indians got a chance to show what would have happened if they had finished the job against the Red Sox last October.
Well, let's just say it didn't make for very good viewing.

Cleveland Indians get bad news from Travis Hafner, Fausto Carmona, Josh Barfield

Wednesday, June 18, 2008
Denver- Being on the disabled list is bad enough for an athlete, but things took a turn for the worse Tuesday for Travis Hafner, Fausto Carmona and Josh Barfield.
Hafner, who has been on the disabled list since May 30 with a sore right shoulder, will visit Dr. James Andrews today in Birmingham, Ala., to get a second opinion on his shoulder.
Carmona, who has been on the disabled list since May 24 with a strained left hip, threw a 50-pitch, three-inning simulated game at Class A Mahoning Valley in Niles, Ohio, on Monday. When he reported to Progressive Field on Tuesday, he complained of soreness in the hip.

Plain Dealer columnist Terry Pluto talks about fathers, sons and how Cleveland Indians can tie them together

Wednesday, June 18, 2008

On Monday, this e-mail ar rived from Rich Striker:
"I went to the Indians game today [Father's Day] as a treat from my kids. After a nice meal, also from my kids, which they enjoyed immensely. But the real gift they gave me was time!"
The e-mail made me remem ber my fa ther, who died on his 78th birthday in 1998. I thought of how he took me to watch the Indians, mostly of the 1960s.

He's definitely the leading man
Power-hitting Sizemore finds comfort batting at top of the order
Wednesday, June 18, 2008
By JOSH WEIR
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

CLEVELAND Don't call Grady Sizemore a home run hitter.

The Indians' 25-year-old leadoff hitter wants no part of that label.

"Then you have to hit 50 (home runs) every year if you're a power hitter. If you don't hit 40 or something, then you're not doing your job. It's a no-win situation," he joked.

Sizemore has no one to blame but himself. He entered Tuesday the American League's second-leading home run hitter with 17, one behind Texas' Josh Hamilton.

He's on pace to hit 39 homers, which would smash his previous season high of 28 in 2006.

"You just want to be a complete hitter, whether you're hitting home runs or hitting singles," said Sizemore, batting .266 on the season. "Every hitter will tell you he wants to spray the ball to all fields and be able to cover the plate. That's what I'm trying to do. Home runs just kind of come."

I'm not really hung up on Barfield being out for a longer period of time, but hopefully Carmona starts feeling much better and get back to the team ASAP. As soon as he gets back really look into C.C. offers. If Pronk has to be for quite a while yet, I would like to see what someone mentioned a page or two ago.

Put Marte at 3B, Garko DH, and Blake at 1B. And if Marte doesn't produce then you go back to putting Blake at 3B and Garko at 1st.

The Cleveland Indians on Tuesday signed infielder Morgan Ensberg to a minor league contract and assigned him to Class AAA Buffalo of the International League.

Ensberg appeared in 28 games with the New York Yankees earlier this season, batting .203 (15-for-74) with one home run and four RBI before being designated for assignment on June 1. Nine days later, the 32-year-old was released.

In 731 career games with the Houston Astros, San Diego Padres and Yankees, Ensberg is a .263 hitter with 110 homers and 347 RBI. He enjoyed his best season with Houston in 2005, when he posted career highs of 36 blasts and 101 RBI while making his lone All-Star Game appearance.

Bases loaded, no outs, and no runs in...this team BLOWS
Actually, the Colorado shortstop made one hell of a play on a ball hit by Choo than doubled Carroll off second base. It was not the typical strike out, pop up, and fly out for the normal three outs when the bases are loaded.

I was at the game last night and sat in my usual Tuesday night spot - near the right field foul pole. Needless to say, we enjoyed heckling Choo. :p

Go Rockies!

I hope you're not the jackass:blush: who cost your Rockies a run by reaching over the railing down the right-field line to cause a ground rule double and prevent a guy from scoring from first.
