Indians Tidbits (2008 season)

The Indians have an estimated $135 million on the disabled list with Martinez
With $135 mil on the payroll on the DL maybe they will be a better team. The thing that I don't understand is why do these players try to play through a minor injury so it becomes a major one.
The Indians also purchased the contract of catcher Damaso Espino from Kansas City and sent him to Class AA Akron.
Now this is a move that should make the Indians a prime pennant contender. I don't even understand why the writer:! put this in the article. He must be really hard up to find something newsworthy.
Wedge did not want to recall Asdrubal Cabrera, the Tribe's opening day second baseman, from Buffalo because he needs to work on his swing
.
I thought that a major-league team could not recall a player for 10 days after they has sent down to the minors or could they recall the player earlier but it would cost the player one of his options:huh:.

I thought that too. But while watching the game last night they mentioned that because of the injury they could have recalled him. So there might be exceptions to the rule (injury)

Well at least that would give us time to trade CC. So by normal "Only in Cleveland" standards. The Indians will get hot over the next few weeks and get back to within 1-2 games of the White Sox come the end of July. Then on August 1st the wheels will fall off and we will end up 15 games back by September and wishing the collapse happened before July 31st.
That's my fear. Even if this team is within reach come August, there's just not enough horsepower to even be considered a contender in the post season with an awful bullpen and patchwork lineup. Hopefully the FO realizes that another rebuilding effort is afoot and doesn't hold off on making moves to improve the future of the franchise for one outside shot at getting swept in the playoffs.

This article is purely speculative, so take it FWIW...

Indians ready to shop Sabathia?

Posted: Friday June 13, 2008 05:03AM ET

A painful swing by the Indians' Victor Martinez on Wednesday could have significant ramifications for the Yankees. An elbow injury to Martinez all but ended the Indians' flickering playoff hopes, and will probably lead to a trade of the ace left-hander C. C. Sabathia. If Sabathia is on the trade market, the Yankees will have strong interest. the Indians would ask for a lot, and teams like the Cubs and the Red Sox may also have interest. But because they trail in the standings, the Yankees theoretically would have the greatest need.
New York Times

I'd prefer not to see him in NY, but I guess it's whoever would make the best offer for the long term future of the Tribe. The Cubs would have some interesting players to dangle, I'd also like to see the Dodgers throw their hat in the ring as they have a deep farm system and a lot of intriguing young ML ready players they may be willing to dangle to improve their rotation.

NFBuck, I'm loving the avatar. I can't wait to see that movie, It looks amazing.

Back on topic, I'd rather not see CC stay in the AL if we do trade him. It's almost like if we do get rid of him we may need to get a young SP prospect (because of Westbrook, we don't know what is going to happen) with some position players.

I actually don't mind him traded to the AL. Whatever the best package we can get we should grab. Cuz I really doubt CC would want to stay in NY anyway. He is a west coast guy and he will try to go out there as much as possible. I think in NY he just won't feel comfortable at all.

So much for our strong starting pitching. Fucking Sowers goes out and throws batting practice again tonight to the tune of 9 hits and 4 runs in 4.1 innings (against one of the worst offenses in MLB), blowing a 3-0 lead in the process. This dude shouldn't even be sniffing the major leagues. :smash:

Send Sowers back to AAA and bring up someone else that won't serve up BP. It's a good thing the bats have been around for the past 10 games or so otherwise we would be back 10+games right now

Cleveland Indians achieve rare feat - two identical lineups in a row

Saturday, June 14, 2008Joe Maxse
Plain Dealer Reporter
There was a rare occurrence at Progressive Field on Friday night.
For the second straight game, manager Eric Wedge penciled in the same lineup, something he has not been able to do for the season's first 2? months. With the struggling offense and rash of injuries, it has been a struggle.
But after pounding out a season-high 18 hits in Thursday's 12-2 win over Minnesota, Wedge went with the same batting order and position players for the series opener against the San Diego Padres.

Indians chatter

Saturday, June 14, 2008

Meet less: With all the trials and tribulations during the first 10 weeks of the season, manager Eric Wedge was asked if he has held more team meetings than in the past.
"Oh, no," said Wedge, in his sixth season. "I've made the rounds informally this year. In '03, we were setting records for meetings."
The Tribe went 68-94 in 2003, Wedge's first season

Totally agree but as was posted previously the Dodgers, while not mentioned in the article above, probably have the most young talent to give up including a nice third baseman. Maybe we could throw AM in to sweeten the pot.

I don't understand why Wedge doesn't keep a lineup and play that lineup night in and night out. Sure you want to get some guys some at bats and such but I mean EVERY game a different lineup? I think it's a bad managing move.

Grady's bat has been pretty hot as of late. Tied for 2nd in HR in the AL. And he has raised his average a bunch of points.
