Indians Tidbits (2008 season)

Tribe's Lee a near perfect 10

Tuesday, June 10, 2008Paul Hoynes
Plain Dealer Reporter
Detroit -- The Indians finished their longest trip of the season Monday night amidst rain, heat and lightning at Comerica Park.
The 11-game trip was supposed to show which way the Indians season was headed. If the signs revealed in Kansas City, Arlington, Texas, and Detroit can be trusted, then the Indians are going to need a lot more games like Monday's 8-2 victory over the Tigers to get this thing turned around.
Cliff Lee, interrupted by a 57-minute rain delay, won his 10th game. He did his second straight five-and-fly for the victory. This time, he didn't have to punch the Gatorade cooler in the dugout over balls and strikes calls as he did Wednesday in Texas.

Sabathia makes do with one Lone run holds up for Indians against Twins, thanks to C.C.'s complete-game, shutout win
By Sheldon Ocker
Beacon Journal sportswriter

Published on Wednesday, Jun 11, 2008
CLEVELAND: A slight buzz of anticipation spread through the crowd of 26,874 after Jhonny Peralta made the Indians' last out of the eighth inning.
Would he or wouldn't he? It took less than a minute to find out.
When C.C. Sabathia ambled out of the dugout, the fans greeted him with a huge cheer that reached a crescendo as he climbed to the top of the mound.
To the gathering at Progressive Field, it was as if Sabathia had scaled Mount Everest and was about to plant the flag.
It was an impressive response for a starting pitcher with a 4-8 record, and that was after the 1-0 win over the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday night.
Then again, Sabathia isn't a 4-8 pitcher, even though that's what the numbers say. Certainly, that's not what all the numbers say.
In nine of Sabathia's 14 starts, he has been supported by two or fewer runs.

Cleveland Indians' C.C. Sabathia pitches a complete-game shutout

Wednesday, June 11, 2008 Joe Maxse

Plain Dealer Reporter
The only thing C.C. Sabathia did not beat Tuesday night was the sunset. He missed that by 11 minutes.
But he had little trouble setting down the Minnesota Twins as the Indians bested their Central Division rival, 1-0, in a compact 2 hours and 6 minutes. There was little to complain about during the shortest Tribe game of the season as Sabathia sent the Progressive Field crowd of 26,874 home happy and early.
"I knew it was pretty early because it was still light," said Sabathia, who had his second shutout of the season and third complete game. "I was thinking maybe I could catch the Laker game [in the NBA Finals]. I just found the zone on both sides of the plate."

Cleveland Indians first baseman Ryan Garko has lone RBI

Improving first baseman has lone RBI
Wednesday, June 11, 2008Dennis Manoloff
Plain Dealer Reporter
First baseman Ryan Garko prides himself on not getting too high or low during a season.
He did not sulk while mired in a sizable slump in May, and he is not tap-dancing as June has brought a change of fortune.
Garko went 2-for-4 with the lone RBI Tuesday night as the Indians defeated the Minnesota Twins, 1-0, at Progressive Field.

Wedge sees ray of light in tough road trip

Wednesday, June 11, 2008Joe Maxse
Plain Dealer Reporter
It could have gone better. But by the same token, it could have gone worse.
The Indians went 5-6 on their longest road trip of the season against Kansas City, Texas and Detroit. Manager Eric Wedge looked at it as a sign of better things to come.
"The guys battled really hard and we were one game away," said Wedge, whose club is home for three games each against Minnesota and the San Diego Padres. "The four games against Texas in those conditions and the four in Detroit against that lineup.

It's C.C. to the rescue as Sabathia saves Tribe's poor offense
Wednesday, June 11, 2008
BY Todd Porter
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

CLEVELAND Searching for something they couldn't find for almost a month ? a winning streak ? the Indians were efficient and fast getting one started. Before the sun set over the shores of Lake Erie, C.C. Sabathia walked off to a standing ovation with plenty of time to catch the NBA Finals in the clubhouse.

Cleveland's big left-hander came through with his best performance of the season Tuesday night at Progressive Field. His complete-game shutout gave the Indians' anemic offense a 1-0 win against the hapless Twins.

"To win on getaway day (Monday) and win the first game of a homestand, it feels great," said Ryan Garko, who knocked in Cleveland's lone run. "It starts with one step."

Sabathia (4-8, 4.34 ERA) took the biggest one. He set down the last 17 Minnesota hitters in a row.

"He's one of the greatest pitchers in the game," Manager Eric Wedge said. "What he does in regard to being even keeled and handling everything out there to get the most out of his ability, and channel his emotions in the right direction is a separator in and of itself. ... For him to put all that together and present it every fifth day, that's special stuff."

Before Sabathia stepped out of the dugout to begin the ninth, a standing ovation greeted him as he walked to the mound. The only time catcher Victor Martinez needed to talk to the southpaw was the next to last pitch. Sabathia reached back and overthrew a fastball to Alexi Casilla that cracked 98 on the scoreboard radar gun. His 106th pitch ended the game.

Wedge isn't worried
Wednesday, June 11, 2008
BY Todd Porter
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

CLEVELAND No, Eric Wedge isn't pushing the panic button. The Indians manager isn't even reaching for it. Not in early June, or even a month from now.

After 64 games, or more than a third of a season, Cleveland came into Tuesday night's game against Minnesota 8 1⁄2 games out of first place and six games under .500. A year ago, the Tribe was 12 games above .500 and leading the American League Central by a game. The three seasons prior, they were at least 51⁄2 games out of first place.

Wedge has seen his team struggle to find its way before the All-Star break. He has never had to deal with quite as many injuries to key players (Travis Hafner, Fausto Carmona, Jake Westbrook, Victor Martinez).

"It's funny. You sit here in April, May, June and even July and go through the same thing every year," Wedge said before the Indians opened a six-game homestand against the Twins and Padres. "People have a lack of understanding for just how long the season is. I get the question in April, May and June, 'Do you feel like you have to win today to stay in it?' That blows my mind.

hahaha well Wedge to make it to the playoffs you have to win more games than you lose. What do you mean he's not worried. He should be. I don't see us doing anything this year because of the guys we have. Especially with the lineup changes every night. No one is going to get into a groove. I look to see Byrd pitch like crap tonight lol

It is games like last night when C. C. is so dominating where I hate to think that he probably will not be with the Indians next year or even for the entire season this year. It just blows my mind on how he could be so good the past 7-8 games and be so miserable that the beginning of the season. Maybe he is starting to showcase his stuff:sad:

The Indians really need to do something regarding their "everyday" players. No one is really producing and even with C. C. at his best we still might lose games 1-0, 2-1, etc. Shapiro must go out and get some hitters or it will be a long time before the Indians ever contend again. After saying that, I wonder how they made it to the championship game last season with essentially the same lineup:crazy:

After Grady's 3 run bomb, we're still down 6-5 haha

LF - Fransisco/Guitierrez
CF - Biscuits and Grady
RF - TRADE/FA PICKUP
3B - Blake
SS - Peralta
2B - TRADE/FA PICKUP
1B - Garko
C - Victor
DH - HEALTHY PRONK

Pitching:
1. Carmona
2. Lee
3. Laffey
4. Byrd
5. Bring up someone from AAA

Get rid of CC and a few prospects for a few position players that can actually hit consistently
