Indians Tidbits (2008 season)

I think the Yankees are in desperate need of starting pitching and they always want to make a run so as much as I hate to do it I would see what they have to offer.

Actually I am hoping the Dodgers decide they need a #1 to lead their rotation in the playoffs. With the Diamonbacks falling back to the pack CC would look great in Dodger blue.

Of course this has nothing to do with the fact that the Dodgers have a good amount of hitters in their minor leagues/majors they can trade. I'll take LaRoche for CC straight up  (well, maybe a few more A or AA prospects) but you get my drift. If not LaRoche, DeWitt would be nice too.

Indians promote Barfield, Cabrera optioned to Buffalo

Detroit-- The Indians, looking for more offense, have recalled second baseman Josh Barfield from Class AAA Buffalo to replace struggling Asdrubal Cabrera. Barfield will be in uniform tonight when the Indians play Detroit to conclude an 11-game trip.

Barfield, the Indians starting second baseman last year until Cabrera took his job in August, was hitting .256 (65-for-254) with 16 doubles, one triple, five homers and 20 RBI for the Bisons. He stole nine bases in 13 attempts and made six errors.

The Indians anticipated Cabrera, in his first full season in the big leagues, struggling this year, but they valued his defense at second and short. Still, they never anticipated him struggling like he did.

I totally agree with you regarding the Dodgers. They have the money and the talent and C. C. might be more agreeable since they are on the West Coast. I know it is not Oakland but at least it is in California.

It is about time that they sent Cabrera down to see if he can get his stroke back. However, I did read a couple weeks ago were the Indians front office says that he saved a run per game defensively when he plays. Not sure how they came up with that statistic.

Willis: 1.1 IP, 3 H, 8 R, 8 ER, 5 BB, 2 K, 2 HR

Against the Indians.

Maybe the Tigers should have looked at his 5.17 ERA, 241 hits allowed (.294 BAA), 29 HR and 1.60 WHIP in 205.1 IP last season.

Indians' Lee becomes first in AL to 10 wins

By LARRY LAGE
AP Sports Writer
DETROIT ? Rain almost got in the way of Cliff Lee becoming the AL's first 10-game winner.
The skies cleared and the tarp came off the field just in time for Lee to get back on the mound.
Lee allowed two runs and had plenty of support on homers from Ryan Garko and Kelly Shoppach in the Cleveland Indians' 8-2 win over the Detroit Tigers on Monday night.
"Ten wins is all good and everything, but I just want the team to win games," he said. "I'm not going to be satisfied until we make the playoffs and win the World Series."
After a 57-minute rain delay in the fifth inning, Lee (10-1) returned to finish a game in which he gave up six hits and two walks while striking out five over five innings.
"If it had been more than about an hour, it would have been tough," Indians manager Eric Wedge said. "But we were able to keep him moving and keep him warm."

Tribe walks all over Tigers Detroit pitcher makes it easier for Indians to win efficient game

DETROIT: Walking the house does not refer to taking a three-hour stroll to check out all 35,000 square feet of LeBron James' new residence.
It is a derogatory term to describe what a pitcher does who can't throw a strike. Walking the house is what Dontrelle Willis did in the first and second inning of the Indians' 8-2 win over the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park on Monday night.
Willis was unable to complete a full workday because he walked five and mixed in a couple of home runs, and retired only four batters.
Wildness has plagued his performances all season. Willis was on the disabled list with a knee injury for 51/2 weeks, which has limited him to four starts and one relief appearance so far. Looking at his numbers, it is hard to imagine he has even made that many, because Willis has thrown a total of only 111/3 innings.
Yet in that span, he has walked 21 and allowed 13 earned runs, including eight to the Tribe.
''We knew that Dontrelle
was struggling with throwing the ball over the plate,'' Indians manager Eric Wedge said. ''But we know how good he can be, so you never know whether the next pitch might be the one where he gets locked in.''

Cabrera sent down, Barfield comes back Indians' patience finally ends with infielder's weak hitting despite praise for his fielding

DETROIT: It was almost inevitable that Asdrubal Cabrera would end up being demoted after his batting average dipped below .200 and continued to fall.
So on Monday, Cabrera was optioned to Triple-A Buffalo and Josh Barfield, whom Cabrera replaced last August as a regular, was called up from Triple-A to become the Indians' starting second baseman.
''It was time for Asdrubal to go down and get his stroke back,'' manager Eric Wedge said. ''He still is going to be a heck of an all-around ballplayer.''
Cabrera's defense, both at shortstop and second, never faltered. He made the routine plays and plays that showed up as highlights on ESPN. But he was batting .184 with seven doubles, 16 runs and 14 RBI in 52 games.

Time running out on Cleveland Indians

Tuesday, June 10, 2008
Detroit -- If manager Eric Wedge and his 25 players haven't synchronized their watches, they should. The time to determine what kind of team they are is upon them.
They have a little more than a month to convince General Manager Mark Shapiro and ownership if they're worth investing in for this season or if bodies should start flying out Gate D of Progressive Field in preparation for 2009. The last day players can be traded without waivers is July 31.
The tipoff came Monday when second baseman Josh Barfield arrived from Class AAA Buffalo, N.Y., to replace overmatched Asdrubal Cabrera. It's the last internal move Shapiro can make.
