Indians Tidbits (2007 Season)

Tribe game plan: preparation

Plain Dealer Reporter
Seattle- General Manager Mark Shapiro and manager Eric Wedge, after washing champagne out of their hair and cleaning chocolate cream pie from their facial pores following Sunday's American League Central Division championship clinching party, returned to being serious Monday.
In a meeting with their staffs, Shapiro and Wedge discussed the last seven regular-season games and the best-of-five division series that awaits them in October. As always, the Indians tried not to get ahead of themselves, so they spent a lot of Monday discussing the last week of the schedule.
It began Tuesday night against Seattle at Safeco Field. They will play a doubleheader today and a night game Thursday before flying to Kansas City to end the season.

I really wish we could go into the postseason with a closer that I had just a little confidence in.:(

Yeah, apparently Borowski was afraid we were getting complacent with his last few saves and not allowing any runs or making them nail biters. He needed to bring up back down to reality. Wedge better have a short leash on him in the playoffs.

You have to admit, even after last night, while JoeB scares everyone every time he is put in to "close" for the most part he has done the job and the Indians are in the playoffs.:)

This is

Most Complete team the indians have had since 1995 best pitching staff we got 2 top notch starters 2 dynamite setup men and a closer who just gets job done...Hafner starting to show signs Perlata is hitting ball other way... We need to learn to lay the bunt down and go station to station though playoff baseball is playing for every run u can get and the starters will shorten game for bullpen... I am excited..

The luxury we have had, and hopefully will continue to have is that our starters eat up a lot of innings, so that Perez and Betancourt are getting outs in the 7th and 8th innings instead of the 5th and 6th. This gives Wedge a bit of a luxury in that if he needs to stretch either of them out a little (which I've noticed he's done a little bit of lately), they could probably finish the game up if necessary.

We are lucky in that regard. I just don't want another Jose Mesa heart break.

That is what I fear most with Blowowski. Granted, he's gotten the job done most of the time, but I just do not trust him in a major pressure situation at all. He has to be the worst saves leader in the history of MLB.

Wedge

What the hell is he thinking tonight? Carmona pitched great over 6 innings, 2 ER with 87 pitches. Lead was 12-2. Seattle had pulled its 4 best hitters that had started. Instead of shutting him down and bringing in a bullpen scrub like Lee to finish it out, he leaves Carmona in there.

End result? He gives up a HR, loads the bases, and runs his pitch count to 112.

Why wouldn't have Wedge gone to the pen in that situation? It would have saved some wear on Carmona's arm. I know its a double-header but we have plenty of arms in the pen now, and 3 innings isn't a lot to ask from them there.

That said, we're still dominating, Go Tribe!!!

Well.....count me as "really concerned" with Joe Blow at this point.....looking on the positive side, at least we won't be playing Seattle in the playoffs so maybe he won't blow any saves....

The Indians' Jason Michaels, right, scores against the Mariners' Rob Johnson on a two-run single by Luis Rivas in the sixth.

SEATTLE -- The Cleveland Indians finally finished off their prolonged, snowed-out series from April, then watched a major postseason concern flare up yet again -- closer Joe Borowski.
Pinch-hitter Jeff Clement hit his first career homer with two outs in the ninth off Borowski to tie the score at 2, and Mike Morse singled home pinch-runner Rob Johnson with two outs in the 10th as the Mariners rallied for a 3-2 victory in the second game of an unusual doubleheader.
