Indians could seize AL Central title today
Tribe's magic number is reduced to two

The Columbus Dispatch

CLEVELAND -- More than 40,000 people packed Jacobs Field last night, many of them wearing red, most of them flush with new love. In this case, a new, old love. When Ryan Garko led off the sixth inning with a home run for the Indians, the fans stood and roared. Before they could return to their seats, Jhonny Peralta hit a home run.
It has taken years for the Indians to reclaim their status as an elite team, and years for many of their fans to give back their hearts. Now that each has taken the leap, they seem intent on soaking up every bit of the joy it brings.

Fireworks for Fausto

Garko, Peralta go deep as Carmona wins 18th

It's a long haul from March to possibly November, and the games grow few when you reach September.
With apologies to the songwriters, the Indians have been playing that September song better than just about anyone in baseball. They continued to make sweet music at sold-out Jacobs Field on Friday night as they knocked off the Oakland Athletics, 4-3.
The few games they need to clinch the Central Division were reduced to two. It could come tonight if things go right - and they surely have been going that way in recent weeks.

Fausto with win #18. He has a shot at 20. Who woulda thunk it?

Fausto will probably pitch again in Seattle next Wednesday and that would be his last start before the playoffs. CC will probably get two but it probably will depend on when the playoffs start because in order to get two he would have to pitch the last regular-season game.

Oakland Athletics defeat Cleveland Indians

With Tigers' loss, Tribe inches toward clinch

Sunday, September 23, 2007 Paul Hoynes

Plain Dealer Reporter
The Tigers cooperated. The In dians did not.
So while a chance to clinch the American League Central Division title was missed Saturday night in front of a sellout crowd, the Indians' magic number still dropped to one -- despite Oakland pounding Paul Byrd and Tom Mastny on the way to a 9-3 victory at Jacobs Field.
Detroit's loss to Kansas City meant the Indians were at least guaranteed a tie for the AL Central title. They have eight games left and the Tigers seven. A tie would result in a one-game playoff between the two teams.

INDIANS INSIDER
Cleveland Indians Kenny Lofton, Chris Gomez remember celebrations

Sunday, September 23, 2007 Paul Hoynes
Plain Dealer Reporter
Kenny Lofton, a man who knows something about clinching parties, says 1995 was the best. Chris Gomez will always have a soft spot for 1998.
Lofton has been to the postseason 10 times with six teams. He soon could be making his 11th trip in his third tour with the Indians.
In 1995, when the Indians returned to the postseason for the first time in 41 years, Lofton hit leadoff and played center field. They won 100 games, clinching the AL Central on Sept. 8. They swept Boston in the division series and beat Seattle in six games to win the ALCS and go to their first World Series since 1954.

Byrd has rough evening

Sunday, September 23, 2007 Mary Schmitt Boyer

Plain Dealer Reporter
It was one of those fluke plays that can sometimes determine the course of a game, and it set the tone for Paul Byrd and the Indians in Saturday's 9-3 loss to the Oakland A's in Jacobs Field.
With two out in the second inning, Mark Ellis hit a pop fly between home plate and third base. Pitcher Paul Byrd, catcher Kelly Shoppach and third baseman Casey Blake converged, but the ball dropped just past the outstretched glove of Shoppach for a single.
"I kind of messed Kelly up because I called for Casey to have it," Byrd said. "I don't think Casey could have gotten to it. I would have been better off going over and catching the ball myself or standing back and letting them decide. It's a frustrating thing, because I could have run over and caught it. That's my fault for not taking a little more initiative on that ball."
