Indians Tidbits (2007 Season)

SI.com - MLB - Team with AL's best record gets playoff pick - Tuesday September 11, 2007 9:09PM

Because there is an extra off day between Games 4 and 5 under the new postseason television schedule this year, it means that the series with the extra off day between the first two games would be played over eight days. Because of that, teams in that series would be able to use their Game 1 and 2 starters on full rest for Games 4 and 5...

Once a team clinches the best record in the AL, it will have one hour to notify Major League Baseball whether it wants to start its division series on Oct. 3 or 4, baseball senior vice president Katy Feeney said.

Very VERY interesting...

Yeah, it adds to the strategy this offseason.

Funny when I heard it this morning on Mike and Mike they right away talk about Boston/New York saying would you want to face Pettite and Wang twice? I was screaming in my car, would you want to face CC & Carmona 4 out of 5 games?

It would really be interesting if Boston is #1 and we end up #2 and face the Yankees. It would almost be in Boston's best interest since they do have a deep rotation to pick the lating start date to see if Cleveland & NY would use all their aces up before the ALCS?

Or if we do end up at #3 and play Boston would they be dumb enough to let the Indians use CC & Carmona in 4 of the 5 games?

According to that article, the team (Boston, or whoever) gets only one hour to choose. If it's a close race at that point, they may not be able to answer based on any specific opponent.

I'd imagine that if it were my team, I'd choose based solely on what I felt my strengths and weaknesses are. Either that or I'd flip a coin.

Wedge still bothers me.
In today's game, Konerko hit a ball into the left field seats that the umpire ruled was a home run. Lofton immediately pointed at the stands saying that the ball had gone foul right before the pole which television replays showed. Anyways, Wedge sort of jogs out of the dugout and talks to the umpires for a little while and then walks back to the dugout. When will this guy shows some fire in his belly. I think other managers would probably have gotten thrown out of the game because the call was so bad.

Also, in the top of the ninth inning he pinch-hit G?mez for Barfield. Why would you do that? Both of them are right-handed hitters and Barfield has not played for a while and is struggling with his confidence so Wedge pinch hits for him. I do not think that is very smart. I mean we were down 4 runs at the time so it didn't make that much of a difference either way. I think he is just stupid.

I guess I just don't like Wedge even if we win the Division despite him. I think if we have the opportunity to use two starters in the playoffs he will probably go with three anyhow. Wait and see.

White Sox 7Indians 4
Trip ends with loss, but no regrets

The Columbus Dispatch

CHICAGO -- Chicago White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen approached his Cleveland Indians counterpart, Eric Wedge, outside the visitor's clubhouse yesterday to wish him good luck. "Eleven more, 11 big ones," Guillen said.

It takes 11 wins in the playoffs to secure a World Series title.
Clearly, there is more at stake for the first-place Indians than merely winning a midweek game against a last-place opponent, which is why they were able to shrug off a 7-4 loss to the White Sox yesterday.
