Asdrubal Cabrera, right, is congratulated by Travis Hafner and Jhonny Peralta after hitting his first major-league homer.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Jake Westbrook has found his pitching groove in time for a playoff stretch run.

Westbrook gave up one run over seven innings, Asdrubal Cabrera hit his first major-league homer and the Cleveland Indians beat the Tampa Bay Devil Rays 8-1 last night.
Grady Sizemore also went deep for the American League Central-leading Indians, who extended their advantage over Detroit to 1 1/2 games. Cleveland has won three in a row on the heels of a four-game losing streak.

Down the road:
Depending on whether Andy Marte is in the Indians' future, they could open next season with Jhonny Peralta at third, Asdrubal Cabrera at short and Josh Barfield at second. Casey Blake's contract runs out at the end of this season, but he'd be eligible only for arbitration, not free agency.
Marte is out of options after this season. The Indians must keep him in the big leagues next year, trade him or risk losing him on waivers.
Scouts who have seen Marte with Class AAA Buffalo say he looks bored and isn't showing good bat speed. Marte opened this season as the Indians' starting third baseman
They also think that Cleveland will have to expand their payroll too close to 100 million to re-sign C. C. after the Zambrana deal.

What's the situation look like if the Indians and Tigers tie for the central? Do we still hold the tie breaker?

I believe we are winning the series by a couple games...I feel bad for C.C. and his "run support". Screw Marte I don't think he's that great. I'm sick of Perralta striking out. I'm impressed with Asdrubal.

Sabathia, Indians come up empty

Monday, August 20, 2007 3:30 AM

FROM WIRE REPORTS

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- The Cleveland Indians wasted another strong outing from C.C. Sabathia and a chance to pad their division lead.

Joel Guzman hit the winning RBI single in his first at-bat with Tampa Bay, sending the Devil Rays to a 4-3 win in 12 innings yesterday.
"It was an unbelievable feeling," Guzman said.
Jonny Gomes opened the 12th with a double off Rafael Perez (0-1) and scored on Guzman's hit to center. Guzman had been called up from triple-A before the game.
"It was a wonderful moment for all of us," Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon said.

Sabathia stays quiet about lack of run support
Monday, August 20, 2007
BY ANDY CALL

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. C.C.

Sabathia knows the question is coming, and he knows it's a question he can't answer.

"How can you look at it?" Sabathia asked reporters Sunday following Cleveland's 4-3, 12-inning loss to Tampa Bay at Tropicana Field. "I just go out and try to keep us in games."

The 27-year-old left-hander has certainly been doing that. He's also been getting very little in the way of offensive support.

Sabathia (14-6) has allowed two earned runs or fewer in each of his last six starts, accumulating a 2.11 ERA in that span. But he has just one win to show for those six games and just two wins in his last nine appearances. Sabathia was charged with two runs over eight innings Sunday, but had to settle for a no-decision.

Decision not easy for Tribe
Bringing in fifth starter means someone must go
By Sheldon Ocker Beacon Journal sportswriter
Published on Tuesday, Aug 21, 2007

Saturday is only four days away. That's when the Indians will need a No. 5 starter again.
Will it be Cliff Lee? Will it be Aaron Laffey? Could it be Jeremy Sowers, who at the moment is definitely in third place?
For now, the answer to that question can wait.
''We are going to take that all the way to the end,'' manager Eric Wedge said. ''We've got Lee and Laffey lined up.''
Whoever is chosen for the assignment must be added to the 25-man roster. To do that, someone else must go.

20 something

Twenty-four Indians pitchers have won 20 games in a season, but no one in the last 33 years. C.C. Sabathia and Fausto Carmona have a shot to join the elite group ? will the rest of the Tribe help?
Tuesday, August 21, 2007 Paul Hoynes
Plain Dealer Reporter
It's been 33 years since an Indians pitcher has won 20 games in a season. More than 50 years have passed since two or more Indians have done it in one season.
C.C. Sabathia and Fausto Carmona, with 14 victories each, have a chance to do both this season if time and circumstance don't conspire against them.
Sabathia and Carmona positioned themselves perfectly at the All-Star break. Sabathia was 12-3 and Carmona 10-4. The possibilities of one of them joining Gaylord Perry (21-13 in 1974) seemed realistic. The odds of matching Bob Lemon, Early Wynn and Herb Score as 20-game winners (1956) were improbable, but not impossible.
