Indians Tidbits (2007 Season)

The Man;904240; said:
1 is false, they will be tied. 2 is false, Tigers have better record (until this game is over) if the Indians win the records will be identical. 3 is true, 11 more games in a row vs. the Indians and Yanks.

You are wrong. We lead the season series, and therefore hold the tiebreaker.

actually you are wrong bud.....from mlb.com........The two teams tied for the division lead will play the one-game tie-breaker, with the winner being declared the division champion......they actually held tie breaking coil flips between Detroit, Chicago WS, and Minn. in event of any ties last year.

Tribe fans have reason to believe
Tigers still searching for healthy pitchers
Published on Thursday, Aug 16, 2007

CLEVELAND: If you're a Tribe fan, worrying comes as easy as breathing. You love your team, but don't really trust it.
So you look at the American League standings this morning and think, ''The Indians are in first place . . . will never last.''
Nothing ever does, at least nothing good.
Part of being a Tribe fan is going through life never expecting that check to finally arrive in the mail. And when it does, you figure, ''It will just bounce.''
That's why Tribe fans need a game such as Wednesday's 5-2 victory over the Detroit Tigers before 39,250 fans at Jacobs Field. That pushed the Indians to 66-54, same as the Tigers at the top of the Central Division.
But most Tribe fans think, ''The Indians are 14-18 since the All-Star break.''
So True.
But the Tigers are even worse at 14-20.

Indians notebook
Barfield missing as a hitter, won't make excuses
Wedge seeks consistency from second baseman, gives Cabrera a chance
By Sheldon Ocker Beacon Journal sportswriter
Published on Friday, Aug 17, 2007
CLEVELAND: Is it the sophomore jinx? Maybe it's switching leagues at an early stage of his career.
For whatever reason, Josh Barfield has not been able to repeat the success he had in his rookie year of 2006 with the San Diego Padres. Indians manager Eric Wedge, for one, would like to get to the heart of why his second baseman is just another slumping Indian these days.
Barfield is only 24, but last season, he batted .280 with 13 home runs and 58 RBI in 150 games with the Padres, playing his home games in arguably the toughest hitters' park in the big leagues.

Starters lacking for support
UPDATE: 8:00 PM, Thursday, August 16, 2007
By Andy Call
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

CLEVELAND Travis Hafner, a guy who has spent most of his career abusing pitchers, actually found a little sympathy for a few of them.

?We?ve wasted a lot of good starting pitching this year,? Hafner said Wednesday. ?It?s been frustrating.?

Cleveland?s starting pitching staff has been good ? actually, even better than good ? for a while. C.C. Sabathia, Fausto Carmona, Paul Byrd and Jake Westbrook have proven durable and dependable in the majority of their outings.

INDIANS INSIDER
Cleveland Indians' Grady Sizemore just fine hitting first or third

Friday, August 17, 2007 Joe Maxse
Plain Dealer Reporter
Two games do not a No. 3 hitter make, but Grady Sizemore has shown his versatility since being moved into that slot.
In the two games against the Tigers, Sizemore went 3-for-6, with three runs, two runs batted in and three walks. He's been on base seven times in nine plate appearances.
"It's only two games," said Sizemore, hitting .278 out of the leadoff spot in the season's first 118 games. "I haven't done anything different. It's just a different spot in the lineup."

Well, an ugly ass win against the friggin' Devil Rays. How many runners left on base tonight? Honestly, the fact that Derek Shelton still has a job is setting off alarm bells in my head. It's nice to be where we are right now inspite of the pitiful display of the past 4-6 weeks, but unless this team magically learns to produce when it counts, they will be sitting home in October. Borowski, of course, had to make the ninth interesting as well. It's a win, but did nothing to inspire confidence in me....just another bad performance by the offense saved by solid pitching...and Borowski induced heartburn.

Cleveland Indians defeat Tampa Bay Devil Rays behind Paul Byrd

Tribe hangs on, back atop Central
Saturday, August 18, 2007 Paul Hoynes
Plain Dealer Reporter
St. Petersburg, Fla.- Don't ask Paul Byrd to critique himself. The veteran right-hander keeps winning games at the darkest time of the Indians' season, but he's just not sure what grade he deserves.
Byrd was sure of two things Friday night after he pitched six innings to lead the Indians to a 2-1 victory over Tampa Bay at Tropicana Field and back into first place in the Central Division.
"Sometimes you've got to give credit to the guys who play behind you," said Byrd. "This was one of those games."
