Indians Tidbits (2007 Season)

So that leads to the next question. Would you be willing to trade Sowers to get that player we need to win right now?

I would do it in a heartbeat. How many more years do you want to wait before the Indians are back in the WS? We have enough young arms in the minors to take Sowers place in upcoming years. I don't think Carmona is going any place soon.

In addition, if we have to trade some of our young talent to get what we need to win the pennant than so be it. I am tired of waiting I guess you are not.

Sowers has hit rough patch lately but I think he will get it worked out soon enough

He had better before Westbrook comes back or, at the least, he will be shuffling off to Buffalo. However, I do agree that he only made 2 bad pitches yesterday but Carmona is not making any.

Okay, time for Sowers to go...and he can take Cabrera with him. They're both liabilities right now.

I would hate to give Cabrera away for nothing. I think he showed early in the season that he had good stuff. I think the majority of his problems are mechanical and mental. Remind me of Carmona last year. I just do not want to give him away for nothing.

On the other hand, I think we can get something for Sowers. Either that or he can go back to Buffalo.

I want to see him sent back to Buffalo for a little while when Westbrook gets back, I think it would be good for him

Shoppach has a cannon behind the plate!

Great job by the pen there. Bases loaded, nobody out; Fultz and Betancourt come in and limit them to the one run on a sac fly. Grab your socks, it's probably Blowowski time...

Eh gad that was ugly. He is just making this an easy decision regarding which pitcher goes down when Westbook comes back. But I read somewhere that Jake is 3-4 weeks away. So c'mon Sowers... get it together for 4-5 more starts. Cuz really we need to get you back on track so you can up your trade value  But worse... I don't want to be forced to send you down to the minors earlier and bring up someone from AAA and to give us an even harder decision.

But, I don't understand Cabrera... he has so much talent and you can see it. But he just can't get it all together. The scary part is I can easily predict that if he gets traded or is waived and someone picks him up it will be a classic "change of scenery" type improvement and he will become a dominant closer for the lucky team that gets him. I just wish he can get his act together soon so he can do that in an Indians uniform.

Like trading Phillips for a bag of peanuts and a coke last year?

3. Chad Cordero to the Indians
Cleveland looks like it has a decent shot at a playoff spot, even from the ultra-tough AL Central. But to get there, they'll need a closer better than Joe Borowski, who's toting an 8.44 ERA (though he does have 13 saves in 15 tries). The Indians revamped their bullpen this winter, but other AL contenders have much more established and dominating ninth-inning men (i.e. Francisco Rodriguez, Jonathan Papelbon, Mariano Rivera, Joe Nathan and even Bobby Jenks). Cordero has a lot of guts, but there's some concern as to whether his stuff would be short in the AL. It doesn't help that he's off to a slow start, with only five saves in nine opportunities. Nationals GM Jim Bowden likely will ask for the moon, anyway, so Cleveland may have to look elsewhere. But it does need to look somewhere.

I'm not so sure Cordero's stuff would fly in the A.L., particularly at the Jake. I do agree that we'll need to make an upgrade at that back of the bullpen to make a serious postseason run though. Thoughts?

Indians finally get win in home opener

Sabathia works hard to keep Mariners in check in makeup game. Wedge glad to move on

By Sheldon Ocker

Beacon Journal sportswriter

CLEVELAND - There will be no more griping about coming within one strike of beating the Seattle Mariners in the home opener.
It took 6 ? weeks, but the Indians finally triumphed, taking the makeup game 5-2 Monday night at Jacobs Field.
The Tribe marketing department tried to make the game into ``Home Opener III,'' complete with prizes (one a trip to WINTERhaven, Fla.), an ice sculpture of the team's script ``I'' and a snow-making machine in the plaza behind left field.
It didn't work. There were 38,645 tickets sold but only 10,000 fans in the ballpark, at best.
``I got tired of looking up (at the video board) and seeing reminders of it,'' manager Eric Wedge said. ``I don't think we need to relive it all the time.''

Bring up Ludlove from Buffalo:biggrin: and if Fultz doesn't get his act together soon I would bring up Perez since I do not think Shapiro is going to make any major moves.

I also think that it is time for Wedge to get over his love affair with David D. who is getting closer and closer to the Mendoza line and start playing Michaels against right-handed pitching. I am sure he will have a better batting average than David D. certainly has right now. I almost think that Wedge doesn't want to make Shapiro look bad with regards to some of this off-season acquisitions. Same thing with Marte. Keep playing Blake at 3rd until he starts to slump.

Indians batters unload on Royals

Sowers gets it together to pitch seven innings as Tribe avoids sweep

By Sheldon Ocker

Beacon Journal sportswriter

KANSAS CITY, MO. - The touchdown and field goal were nice, but the game Thursday night was about Jeremy Sowers.
For the first time in almost a month, manager Eric Wedge and General Manager Mark Shapiro are not walking around with deep furrows in their brows the day after Sowers starts a game.
Sowers, too young to display any kind of furrows, was troubled by his vulnerability, but he can point with pride to his latest performance, leading the Tribe to a 10-3 win over the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium.
Pitching seven solid innings -- his longest outing since April 23, six starts ago -- Sowers (1-4, 6.29 ERA) yielded a lone run, six hits and one walk.
``Jeremy was really good tonight, and he got better as the game went on,'' Wedge said. ``He also made adjustments later in the game. Hopefully, tonight was a turning point for him.''
Two of the hits that Sowers allowed never left the infield, none were for extra bases and one was a bloop that landed in short left field.

Indians report

He has way to end slump down to a T

Dellucci tries donning `Slump Buster' T-shirt

By Sheldon Ocker

Beacon Journal sportswriter

KANSAS CITY, MO. - David Dellucci has resorted to his ``Slump Buster'' T-shirt, the one that Jon Lieber gave him when he was with the Philadelphia Phillies last season.
``I wish I didn't have to pull it out,'' said Dellucci, who has been platooning in left field after the Indians signed him over the winter.
His .227 batting average is a fact of life, but Dellucci doesn't like it. He has tried the usual corrective measures: extra batting practice, studying his swing on video, comparing his swing now with when he was hitting.
``I've worked on about everything you can work on for a swing,'' Dellucci said. ``It hasn't been for lack of effort. You name it, I've done it.''
Dellucci was supposed to come in and give the Tribe some production, but he has just one home run and seven RBI.
