Indians Tidbits (2007 Season)

He's played 3rd the last couple of years. He was a lf(i think) before that.
Since Fla. is looking to deal him, it would take good minor league prospects, rather that competing with all the big boys for the highest $$ bidder.

He has also gained quite a bit of weight over the last season but he would be a solid investment especially if management could get him to drop some weight like they did with Peralta.

Cabrera will be a Yankee. Book it.
Possibly, but the other factor is NO team is going to pay Pay-rod his asking price. The only potential suitor is really the Yankees. Boston could, but wont. I suppose the Mets could... Angels? Not with Vlady. Cubs.... maybe... Yankees won't pay 350, but I just don't see where PayRod thinks he's gonna get that kind of jack.

That said, Cabrera would be just fine as a Yankee. I'm not a PayRod hater, really, but I'm also not of the mind that he's a must get. Some people are winners, he's not. He gets you to the POs, but he can't get you through them. Conversely, a guy like..... drawing a blank, so I'll go to football... a guy like Vince Young... he can't put up numbers which dominate (apparently), but he's a gamer and a winner. Make sense?

Florida wants 2 top prospects. No way the Yankees part with Joba. I know I wouldn't.

If the Dodgers don't get Cabrera, they have the $$$ to get A-Rod, but no way do they give him 300M. After watching Lowell kick ass in the playoffs and A-Rod being ho hum, no team in the league will give him the money he's asking for. The Yanks only take him back if he takes a pay cut since they no longer have the payout coming from the Rangers.

Cleveland Indians preparing contract for C.C. Sabathia

Thursday, November 08, 2007Paul Hoynes
Plain Dealer Reporter
Orlando, Fla. -- Indians General Manager Mark Shapiro is preparing a contract for C.C. Sabathia, one of the favorites to win the American League Cy Young award next week. The first people to see the contract won't be Sabathia and his agents, they'll be Indians owner Larry Dolan and his son, Paul, the team president.
"We're working on something to put in front of ownership, and we'll go from there," said Shapiro on Wednesday at the general managers' meetings.
Sabathia, 27, went 19-7 this year with a 3.21 ERA. He led the big leagues with 241 innings pitched, the first Tribe pitcher to do so since Bob Feller in 1947. Sabathia, the Indians' No. 1 pick in 1998, will enter his free-agent year in 2008.

Yes with power!

I have heard that Cabrera is available but isn't he a natural shortstop and what is the asking price?

Cabrera would be perfect, but... like Bucks21 said he has gained weight and it concerns the Marlins that he might be outgrowing 3rd base. His contract status is he is Arbitration eligible for 2 more years and it seems like his worth now is north of $10 million.

So that means if the Indians were to trade for him we would then sign him to a long term deal (how the Indians deal with every Arbritration case) and that will be bigger bucks (can you say Hafner's deal + more). But even if we don't sign him to a contract we will have him for at least 2 more years.

Then what happens if/when Cabrera outgrows 3rd base? Is he a LF? 1B? DH? You have to answer that question cuz if he can't play outfield then what do we do with our glut of DH/1Bs?

So what pieces do we trade? We can easily give them Marte since we won't need him anymore, but his value is not what it use to be. Maybe to release the glut at 1B if the Indians see Cabrera outgrowing 3B is to include Garko in the deal? Then of course pitching will be involved. Sowers? he might be more of a throw-in versus a major part of the trade. So that leaves who? We do have some A+ prospects in Adam Miller and Chuck Lofgren. But do we really trade one of them as they are insurance if CC leaves.

But then it comes down to the market for his services. You know the Yankees would love to have him and the Dodgers are to be rumored to be looking at him too. It will come down to the price in talent we will have to give up, and that price might be really high if a bidding war starts.

Well if anyone comes calling and wants Miller or Lofgren it is no deal. I would trade Lee or Sowers along with some of our young outfield prospects or first baseman who we have in the minors for a good rh power hitting 3rd baseman or outfielder.

I am pretty sure that we have a pretty good third-base prospect in the minors so if Cabrera would get too big for the position you can always move him to the outfield. It wouldn't bother me if we traded Garko if it was necessary to get Cabrera since we have an abundance of first baseman in the minors but, saying that, I don't know if I would want to weaken one position to strengthen another.

I am just tired of Blake and his average with risp. W
e need someone to fill that role to be real contenders.

Also, if the Indians front office shows that they're trying to improve the team it might help with the CC negotiations.

I heard yesterday that the one guy all the GM's are asking Shapiro about is Peralta. I'd trade him in a heartbeat if necessary. Sure he has some pop, but he sucks in the clutch , he's a butcher, and has the range of a three-toed sloth.

Cabrera to Cleveland won't happen for several reasons:

1. florida wants a ton for him. the rumored asking price to the yankees is either phillip hughes or joba chamberlain + a prospect.

2. he's gotten too fat to play 3rd.

3. his contract is up in 2 years. cleveland won't pony up the farm for a guy they probably won't be able to afford in 2 seasons.

4. he's going to end up either in LF or as a 1b/DH guy. cleveland already has plenty of the later.

Bingo. As much as Shapiro is a moneyballer.... he also has a touch of John Shurholz in him... and... that means he doesn't trade quality arms.... and... especially not cheap ones.

Well... if that 10 million a year number is correct, and I think it probably is... what's on the FA market that can be got for no prospects?

Problem is, then you're still stuck with Blake to play the outfield... and... he's less valuable there than at 3rd... I mean... to a degree, you're right, if you want to move Cabrera to left... then it doesn't matter much... but... why not just get a LF that's going to cost you less than a 3B?

Also, if the Indians front office shows that they're trying to improve the team it might help with the CC negotiations.

Why would they need to show that? Unless the other bidders are NYY or Boston... (and the first wouldn't surprise me)-- I don't think its a question that the Indians are committed to winning... He knows what the farm system is capable of, they win games and if he wants to see "commitment to winning" I tend to think he would beleive spending money on him is the best way.

Yea, but none that can hit anywhere near as good as him. He's like a fat Manny. He hit's over .300 against righties, lefties, day, night, any stadium, before/after the break.

No way the Yankees give them either pitcher. Well, maybe they would. You'd think they would have learned their lesson by now that their old staff sucks.
