Wedge slowly turns toward next season Indians manager says ALCS loss still fresh, is optimistic about '08

CLEVELAND: How many deep breaths does a manager take to avoid hyperventilating after his team's season ends one win from the World Series? How many times does he kick his locker or pound the desk? How close does he come to setting fire to his uniform?

Wedge focused on Tribe, not Series

Friday, October 26, 2007Dennis Manoloff
Plain Dealer Reporter
Indians fans can take comfort in knowing the club's manager, Eric Wedge, cares.
A lot. Probably more than anyone ever will realize.
"I know we fell short," Wedge said. "I know that better than anybody."

Offseason of opportunity
The Indians will be dealing from a position of strength when looking to upgrade the team

CLEVELAND -- The Hot Stove League might never climb beyond lukewarm around here. The Indians already have a strong core of players signed mostly to modest contracts, enviable pitching depth and a farm system rich in big-league, if not necessarily elite, talent.

There are no obvious holes to fill.
"We've got a unique opportunity to go into the offseason with an opportunistic mind-set," general manager Mark Shapiro said recently during his annual state-of-the-team news conference.

Tribe's lack of playoff experience costly in end
Small ALCS setbacks snowball into catastrophes as two aces, key hitters struggle under pressure
Published on Sunday, Oct 28, 2007

No place to go, nowhere to hide and the sky is falling. . . .
The Red Sox score a run on three hits off staff ace C.C. Sabathia in the first inning of Game 5 of the American League Championship Series. Indians lose.
No place to go, nowhere to hide and the sky is falling. . . .
Travis Hafner goes 1-for-12 with six strikeouts in the final three games of the series, all Tribe defeats.
No place to go, nowhere to hide and the sky is falling. . . .
After Boston's first two batters reach on mis-hit but well-placed infield singles in Game 6, can Fausto Carmona be thinking anything other than, ''How soon will something else go wrong?'' With two outs, underachieving J.D. Drew hits a grand slam.

Shapiro: Expect more of the same next year
Sunday, October 28, 2007
By Andy Call
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

CLEVELAND General Manager Mark Shapiro expects the 2008 Indians to look a lot like the 2007 Indians.

Which, if you throw out the last three games of the year, could be a pretty good thing.

"My basic desire is to not make many changes," Shapiro said. "This game leads you to the temptation of making decisions based on short-term evaluations. The body of work is 96 wins. My hope is we'll benefit from the final failure and build off the success of the 96 wins."

That final failure still stings - three consecutive losses to Boston in the American League Championship Series that cost the Indians a trip to the World Series.

Antonetti stays with Tribe
Jim Ingraham, Morning Journal Writer
11/01/2007

Indians assistant general manager Chris Antonetti has turned down an offer to become the general manager of the St. Louis Cardinals. Antonetti, who interviewed for the Cardinals' GM job last week, has decided to remain with the Indians.

''We are delighted to retain Chris as our assistant general manager as he is part of the core of a very strong front office,'' said Indians president Paul Dolan, in a release issued by the club.

The Cardinals introduced John Mozeliak as the team's new GM yesterday. Mozeliak had been the assistant GM under Walk Jocketty, who was fired on Oct. 3.

The Cleveland Indians have until Wednesday to exercise their options on pitchers Paul Byrd, Joe Borowski and Aaron Fultz. It seems likely they will pick up Borowski and probably Fultz, who was pretty good before suffering an abdominal injury in midseason.
Byrd is a unique case. Major League Baseball officials want to talk to him about his admission that he used human growth hormone. There was a report last week that the league is considering punishing players who were involved in the online pharmacy/wellness clinic sting -- Byrd, Troy Glaus, Gary Matthews Jr., etc. -- even though none failed a drug test.

Tribe releases reliever Miller
By Staff & Wire Reports
11/06/2007

CLEVELAND -- Matt Miller, who at one time was considered a key cog in the Indians' bullpen before elbow woes sidelined him for large chunks of the last two seasons, was released by the Indians yesterday.

In 57 appearances for the Tribe in 2004 Miller was 4-1 with a 3.09 ERA. In 94 career appearances for the Indians over the last three years he was 6-1, with a 2.77 ERA.

However, he missed most of the 2006 season following elbow surgery. In 38 appearances at Buffalo this year, he was 0-1 with a 2.89 ERA.

The Indians yesterday also outrighted pitcher Mike Koplove and infielder Luis Rivas to Buffalo.

Last week, Kenny Lofton, Trot Nixon and Chris Gomez all filed for free agency, so the Indians' 40-man roster currently stands at 34.

I would love it if they could lure Mike Lowell away from Boston, but it looks like he will resign.
I think there were a great to have to trade one of our "starters" along with someone else to get a good Rh bat. I just don't think the front office will lay out a ton of money for a free-agent RH 3rd baseman or OF.
