Indians Tidbits (2007 Season)

As Boston leans on ace, Beckett stands tall

Friday, October 19, 2007Jodie Valade
Plain Dealer Reporter
Josh Beckett had been here before, seen this precise situation, weathered this playoff pressure and emerged unscathed.
So when Thursday's Game 5 rolled around, he knew precisely what he had to do, and exactly how he had to pitch. Experience, it seems, matters just a little bit in the playoffs.
"I felt good," Beckett said. "It's easy when you've got everything going."

Bat-drop leads to raised voices

Friday, October 19, 2007

Josh Beckett has an issue with Kenny Lofton dropping his bat on a walk. Beckett let Lofton hear about it Thursday night.
After Lofton thought he had walked in the fifth inning, he dropped his bat at the plate. But umpire Gary Cederstrom called the pitch a strike. On the next pitch, Lofton flied to left.
As the ball was in the air, Beckett yelled at Lofton. Lofton, not one to take anything lying down, fired back. Both continued to chirp as Lofton came near the mound heading toward the dugout. Benches emptied; there were no ejections.

Cleveland Indians General Manager Mark Shapiro assembled players he believes in

Friday, October 19, 2007Paul Hoynes
Plain Dealer Reporter
Indians General Manager Mark Shapiro took in batting practice Thursday afternoon. The Tribe had a 3-1 lead in the American League Championship Series over Boston. They needed to win one of the next three games to reach the World Series and play Colorado.
He felt good, and he felt nervous.
"We've just won three straight games, but that team over there could do the same thing to us," said Shapiro.

Cleveland Indians manager Eric Wedge expresses his respect for Joe Torre

Friday, October 19, 2007 Jodie Valade

Plain Dealer Reporter
Someday soon, Eric Wedge will call Joe Torre, repaying the kind words sent his way after the Indians knocked the New York Yankees out of the American League Division Series.
Terry Francona, too, will make a call, and the Boston manager will tell Torre how much he respects him, and how much he hopes he is happy.
But Francona's call just wasn't going to be Thursday, the day that Torre turned down the New York Yankees' one-year, $5 million contract offer to return to manage the club.

First pitch of first importance

Friday, October 19, 2007

What may be the key for Fausto Carmona in Game 6 at Fenway Park on Saturday night? How about strike one, as in getting ahead in the count. When the Tribe star was knocked out after four innings in Game 2 at Boston, he walked five and was charged with four runs in those four innings. Carmona averaged slightly under three walks per nine innings in the regular season, but in Boston he was at strike one on only 10 of 24 hitters. He needs to change that strategy.

Manny's world no fun for Tribe

Friday, October 19, 2007 Mary Schmitt Boyer

Plain Dealer Reporter
Manny Ramirez is wearing out the Indians - and their fans.
Every once in a while, the Boston Red Sox aren't too sure what's going on either. After all, in a rare interview before Wednesday's workout, Ramirez told reporters it would not be the end of the world if the Red Sox lost.
They didn't. Ramirez went 2-for-4 with a run-scoring single and a double to help the Red Sox beat the Indians, 7-1, in Game 5 of the American League Championship Series on Thursday night at Jacobs Field. The victory enabled the Red Sox to close to within 3-2 in the best-of-seven series. Game 6 will be Saturday night in Boston.

Quite a scene at the Cleveland Indians-Boston Red Sox game at Jacobs Field

Friday, October 19, 2007Mark Gillispie
Plain Dealer Reporter
The bawdy stories of outrageous behavior in the bullpen that Jim Bouton told in his seminal sports book "Ball Four" are apparently a thing of the past.
What are the Indians pitchers doing in the bullpen these days? They watch the game intently, and bullpen coach Luis Isaac is there to make sure of it.
"They've got to watch the game from the beginning so they have an idea of what hitters are doing," said Isaac, who has been the man in charge of the Indians bullpen for the past 19 years.

Sabathia still waits for big-game win

Friday, October 19, 2007 Bud Shaw

Plain Dealer Columnist
Mark Shapiro quoted rock 'n' roll singer Tom Petty.
"The waiting," the Indians' general manager said Thursday, "is the hardest part."
Just so no one presumes he meant the wait for C.C. Sabathia to look like a 19-game winner or the time it took for Eric Wedge to go to his bullpen in relief of Sabathia in Game 5, Shapiro was talking about Thursday's 8:20 p.m. start.

Sox face replay of the 2004 ALCS

Friday, October 19, 2007 Mary Schmitt Boyer

Plain Dealer Reporter
Boston manager Terry Francona remembered walking into his clubhouse three years ago when the Red Sox trailed the New York Yankees, 3-0, in the American League Championship Series.
"Actually, what I remember is I walked in there and they were watching "Animal House," watching [John] Belushi hit the guy over the head with a guitar," Francona said before Game 5 of the ALCS on Thursday night against the Indians at Jacobs Field. "I was thinking it was sort of appropriate."
The Red Sox came back to win Game 4 on a two-run home run by David Ortiz in the 12th inning after Bill Mueller singled home Dave Roberts to tie the score at 4-4 in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Tribe's early rally just a tease

Friday, October 19, 2007Joe Maxse
Plain Dealer Reporter
The Indians were looking for one good inning Thursday night. It never came.
Seeking to clinch the American League pennant in front of the Jacobs Field fanatics, the Indians could not find the key to unlock their offense as the Red Sox prevailed, 7-1.
One good inning was all it took in both games 2 and 4 - the Tribe scoring seven runs in a single frame each time to take control of the series.

Indians leave their fans wanting -- again
Friday, October 19, 2007
BY TODD PORTER

CLEVELAND

The soft July-like wind at Jacobs Field puffed up the huge American flag in center field most of Thursday night. A summer breeze in October wasn't quite enough to keep the ghosts and hexes of Cleveland's sporting past off the shores of Lake Erie.

Cleveland fans know disappointing feeling

CLEVELAND

The soft July-like wind at Jacobs Field puffed up the huge American flag in center field most of Thursday night. A summer breeze in October wasn?t quite enough to keep the ghosts and hexes of Cleveland?s sporting past off the shores of Lake Erie.

Instead, the eerily warm night invited them in and practically poured a glass of cider ? or dark lager, depending on your perspective ? as misery, and even concern, set in at Jacobs Field for the first time this baseball season.

Friday, October 19, 2007
BY Chris Beaven
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

CLEVELAND Never write off the Red Sox with their backs against the wall, especially when Josh Beckett is on the mound.

The Red Sox continued to be one of the toughest teams to close out, while Beckett added to his resume as this era?s dominant postseason pitcher.

Boston beat the Indians, 7-1, at Jacobs Field in Thursday?s Game 5 of the ALCS to stave off elimination.

By Scott Priestle

The Columbus Dispatch

CLEVELAND -- While champagne and beer chilled deep within Jacobs Field last night, C.C. Sabathia fidgeted in the dugout and threw too hard on the mound. Catcher Victor Martinez stepped out from behind home plate and motioned to calm down.
