Indians Fans... Claim they are the best, but are they?

Tibbs: "Indians never finished ahead of the Yankees?"

WRONG! The Indians finished ahead of the Yankees twice:
1. in the 2nd half of the strike-split season in 1981
&
2. in 1990 when the Yanks were dead last

And the Indians and Yankees also tied for 4th place in the AL East in 1992 with identical 76-86 (.469) records.

Next answer please ..

The "streak" lasted a lot longer than 1995, and the lack of a football team and a shitty hoops team helped keep the streak going. The fact is, Cleveland showed itself to be a bandwagon baseball city, as evidenced by their pathetic attendance this year. If the Browns ever get good again, "The Jake" will be the loneliest place on Earth.

First, no one said the streak ended in 1995...the point was fans jammed The Jake solely because the Indians were highly successful, and not because of the performances of the other two pro sports teams. As for your statement about The Jake being empty if the Browns become a solid team, do you realize how cosmically moronic you sound? The baseball season starts in April, Einstein, and football exhibition doesn't start until August, so that wouldn't affect baseball fans...you really think fans will stay at home April through July because football season is approaching? And even when the NFL regular season starts in early September, that's only one game a week for the Browns, whereas baseball is seven days a week...the Indians and Browns playing in Cleveland on the same day and at the same time will happen once or twice, and that's it. By the way, the 1994 Browns were 11-5 in the regular season and went to the divisional playoffs, yet the anticipation of an even better Browns season in 1995 didn't dampen the spirits of the baseball fans in 1995 (they led the majors in attendance IIRC), so your argument that The Jake will be empty if the Browns are good is totally wrong.

TRIVIA QUESTION: Baseball started divisional play in 1969. It expanded to 3 Divisions in each league in 1994. Over that span (1969 to 1993), every team finished ahead of every other team in their respective divisions at some point, except for one who never finished ahead of another until 1992, the second to last year of 4 Divisional play.
I'll take a stab. Cleveland & Detroit. In the last 10 years of horrible baseball we forget the Tigers normally won a ton of games through the years. Plus I remember Jack Morris owning the Indians back in the 80s.

INCORRECT. The Indians finished ahead of Detroit in the old AL East five times: 1974, 1975, 1976, 1989, & 1992.

What division is it?

I'd make some guess like the Mariners never finished ahead of the A's...first because it shortens the "possible Time period" this in only based on the idea that the A's were real for two stretches of that time span... and the during the "down" period of theat period, they had Rickey- round 1- in his prime.

Other thought if its a REAL cheapy like whoever finshed ahead of the ROckies and Marlins in '93 :wink2:

AKAK: "What division is it?"

If I give any hints, I'll give it away.

"I'd make some guess like the Mariners never finished ahead of the A's"

INCORRECT. The M's finished ahead of the A's FOUR times, including their very first season of 1977, and three more times in 1979, 1982, and in 1993.

"Other thought if its a REAL cheapy like whoever finshed ahead of the ROckies and Marlins in '93."

The Rockies & Marlins don't count. I will give my first hint: neither team I'm referring to is an expansion team.

AKAK: "Tribe, Redsox."

Ding, ding, ding! We have a winner! From 1969 to 1991, the Cleveland Indians NEVER finished ahead of the Boston Red Sox once .. until the 2nd to last year of 4 Divisional play in 1992.

FYI: Boston was in last place that season.

First off, I think the term "Best Fans" is equivalent to the "# 1 Dad" T-Shirt of Seinfeld fame .. I don't really think those rankings are official.

But, on this thread, I've read one of those 'Best Fans' not know what a Pennant was, & another not know what year his team went 100-44. Even I know that, and I can throw in more Indians stats from that season off the top of my head .. and I hate the Indians.
O.K. first of all, yes I am an Indians fan, but if you even have any slight amount of common sense you can see that my original post to start this thread was contradicting that the Indians are the best fans in baseball. Just wanted to clear that up.

BTW, why do you hate the Indians?

aurorabuckeye13: "BTW, why do you hate the Indians?"

As you may or may not know, I am a Yankee fan. I hate the Indians mostly because I was living in Columbus from '93 to '98 (during the Indians' heyday), and I was a lone Yankee fan with a million Indians fan friends around me, as we were duking it out for the top spot in the AL those years.

Plus, I'm not a big fan of any divisional rival back in the day, & I'm still bitter about '97.

I don't hate the Indians as much as the Red Sox or Mets, but they're kindof in the "90's rivals" category (along with the Mariners) that I don't care for.

TRIVIA QUESTION # 2: Who can name for me the only player to play for a team in all 4 Divisions in the same season?

Yeah, yeah .. If a red wood tree falls in the forest & no one's there to hear it, does it make a sound?
