Indians Fans... Claim they are the best, but are they?

Its kind of a toss up IMO... Thome and Manny were more complete hitters by 97... but you could argue that Lofton and Baerga (still productive that year) were better than Grissom And Tony "Ole" Fernandez enough lean toward '95... but... Of course Thome was at 1st in 97... so you had Matt Williams (Who essentially replaced Belle)... so the Corners were stronger in '97 (over Paul Sorrento) and I'd call Eddie Marray v. David Justice sort of a wash... but '97 still had that Bip Roberts/Brian Giles Platoon... But more production from Alomar in'97...

For Pure Devastation... I'd have to go '99. With Lofton, Vizquel (who hit .333 that year) Robbie Alomar, Ramirez, Thome, Justice all having Prime seasons... Richie Sexson "Pitched In" for .261 31, 116... as well. Yeah.. Pitch around that.

I beleive all the guys nutty mentioned are under contract for at least 3 more seasons... CC jsut did an extension becasue he wanted to... Well... Sizemore has like 2 option years left still... mabye 3... he's only 22... already the best position palyer on the team... Westbrook got an extension as well I think...

edit for actual numbers:

Martinez: 5 year deal through 2009 with club option for 2010
Hafner: Signed 3 year contrat on April 14.

Thanks, BK.

AKAK: "Its kind of a toss up IMO"

Coming from an opponent's POV, I'd take '97 all the way. Alomar was healthy, and having a career year, Thome & Ramirez were better (as you mentioned), Matt Williams & Justice were clutch pro hitters, and at the bottom of the line-up Bip Roberts was a pain in the ass to get out, and Grissom always was a great playoff player (very underrated in my mind).

Look at the names they had at bit parts during the season, too: Richie Sexson, Sean Casey, Julio Franco, Kevin Seitzer, & Kevin Mitchell.

"I'd call Eddie Marray v. David Justice sort of a wash"

No way. Murray was a washed-up slugger at that point feasting on the fact that Belle was always on base ahead of him (Belle had a monster season in '95 - only player in baseball history w/ 50 2B & 50 HR in the same year, a strike shortened year, no less).

Justice was in his prime, a great clutch hitter, and way better than Murray at that point in his career.

Murray went .323 21 85 .891 OPS in that strike shortened year (336 ABs...)

Justice went .329 31 101 1.014 OPS... (495 ABs) in '97.

The only real production difference is OPS... and Justice walked a heck of a lot more than Murray... I don't see a big edge.

Side Note... Eddie Murray's washed up ass stole 2 more bases than Justice in the seasons noted... 5-3.

I have had my own usher incident at an Indians game. However it was in 1984 and in the old Municipal Stadium. This was back in the day when 5000 people was a good day. I was a senior in high school, and my friends and I would go to either Pittsburgh or Cleveland for games several times during the summer. Although I was a Pirates fan I enjoyed Cleveland because nobody was ever there, you could sit wherever you wanted, and I could buy beer there.

Anyhoo. we would usually get to the game (we always had tix from a friends dad) and we would go and sit behind the third base bag. Usually somewhere between the on-deck circle and the bag. On one particulary sparse evening we were joking that we could hear the people over behind first base talking. So being the smartasses that we were, two of us went over behind first base dugout, and two stayed at third. We proceeded to have a conversation back and forth for about five minutes. It was the typical "hey whats going on" "What are you doing after the game" "Do you think Cory Snyder is Gay? stuff. After about 5 minutes an usher came down and told us if we wanted to continue our conversation we would have to move over to third base because we were pissing off the umpire. The funny thing was, he never even asked to see our tickets too see if we even belonged there, or over at third base. Nobody ever gave a shit at that place.

Oh yeah, one other time in approx mid July (7-8 Months after football season ended) we were just walking around out in the bleachers (Dog Pound) and there were still milk bones and shit all over under the seats out there. Nice to know that they did not even clean that shit up for opening day.

Indians fans claim that they are the best fans in baseball, which they support by showing the amazing stat of 455 straight games being sold out. This was in the 90's when the team regularly won the Central and made runs at pennants regularly (although they never got one). There is the legendary John Adams who has beat the drum in the bleacher seats for the last 32 years the Tribe has played. Now that is one of the best fans in baseball.

Now all of the other Tribe fans out there, I'm not so sure about. After the streak of sellouts ended, so did the winning.
I have a buddy who's a big Tribe fan and he loved to talk down the Pirates' poor attendance (at which point I reminded him Major League using the Indians was no accident). He would bristle when I would suggest that Cleveland (including him) must have discovered baseball in 1994, because Tribe "fans" have little room to rag on anybody else.

This year? The lowly Pirates are averaging 22,694/game while the Indians are drawing only 18,998/game - 28th in MLB.

Greatest fans in baseball my ass. The baseball team was good for the first time in decades, the football team left town and the hoops team was a joke. As soon as those conditions changed, the baseball attendance went back to normal.

Yeah... but I'm sure your buddy is still amused by the fact that the Pirates have sucked ass since Bonds left.

I love CoCo and Ronnie as spark plugs for this offense as well. I really think this team continues to hit on all cylinders and makes a push ahead of Minn in the next month. Boone is swinging a better bat, and Blake had a great year last year, now he just needs to find it. Once the offense starts putting it all togther this will be an exciting ball club. Milwood is quoted in the Blade today as saying the team is having fun now, moving runners over, and take one run an inning ect. Sounds like there is a good mood in the dugout. I think attendence at the Jake will pick up as the weather gets nicer. Hell the last two games have had rain delays. Yuck! besides that our record at home has been bad. We have been playing far better on the road this year> once we continue to win at home, fans will come around. On a personel note, I am going to my first game this year on Monday v the Red Soxs. Im so pumped. I think i may have founda replacement for OSU football during the Summer.
GO TRIBE!

Probably the one thing I hate most about the indians is listening to their broadcasters. Maybe I am old school, and in my book there is nobody better than Marty Brennaman. I fucking hate broadcasters that call all of the players by their first name. If you are not a fan of the team you never know who the fuck they are talking about. The Tribe broadcasters are the worst at doing this.

OsUPhAn, I am not criticizing you, but you sound like all the other Cleveland fans I know. This guy is great, we have the best young people, pitchers, blah blah blah. Just becuase they are hot now does not mean they can maintain it. The young guys are the ones who petered out 3/4 of the way through the year last year. I would love to see them compete this year, but I really think they are still a year or two away.

The football team leaving and the Cavs sucking had nothing to do with it...it was purely the Tribe finally becoming a great ball team. When they started winning in 1994 (the first year of The Jake, if I'm not mistaken), people couldn't get enough. The Tribe had the best record in baseball during the shortened 1995 season (100-44), even though the Browns were still there, and you couldn't get a ticket.

Close, the 94 season (first year of the Jake) was the shortened season in which the Tribe went 100-44. After having such a dominating team and having nothing to show for it (no playoffs that year) the fans were excited about 1995, when the Tribe lost to the Braves in game 6 of the World Series.
