Lightning Round: Ryan Day Confirms Seth McLaughlin Tore His Achilles, Says Carson Hinzman Will Play Center and Austin Siereveld Will Play Left Guard

Here is a bullet-point recap of Day's media session:
  • On Seth McLaughlin: "Seth tore his Achilles on a non-contact injury. Crushed for Seth and our team. Once that wears off, you gotta move on. Next man up mentality. ... We'll make adjustments. We'll move Carson (Hinzman) to center and Austin (Sierveld) to left guard."
  • Day said McLaughlin's injury is "like a body blow." He said Ohio State needs to respond this week. "We gotta move on, and we gotta win games."
  • On Carson Hinzman moving to center: "I see some confidence in him. I think he's learned a lot from Seth this year. They've been great together. He gained a lot of confidence coming out of the Penn State game. ... He has experience at center. He's done it. ... He'll be ready this weekend."
  • On Austin Siereveld becoming the first-team left guard: "What we've seen in practice and what we've seen in the game. ... He's played some football for us. He's the next guy up. He'll do great as well." Day said Luke Montgomery and other young offensive linemen need to be ready to go now that Ohio State has lost two offensive linemen for the year.
  • Day said Josh Padilla stood out in his three reps against Northwestern this past weekend. "I did think the last three Padilla was in there during the Northwestern game, he took advantage of them. Those were three really good reps." Day said Padilla would be next up at center if
  • Day said Zen Michalski is more "week-to-week" rather than "day-to-day" after he suffered an injury in Ohio State's win over Nebraska.
  • Day said McLaughlin will have surgery next week on his Achilles. This week, Day said McLaughlin will "be around the guys" on the field and coaching them up.
  • Day said WIll Kacmarek is trending toward being available against Indiana. "Will looks like he's gonna be ready to play," Day said, acknowledging that he's still waiting for confirmation from the team's doctors. "He's had a good week. I think he'll be available."

I guess I've watched or followed too much Ohio State ball, or I have some sort of mental osmosis with the coaching staff on the OL. The group has a big task on Saturday, but not all hope is lost there.

Our best OL is now at LT even though that's not his natural position. Siereveld and Montgomery show promise. Padilla is a Billy Badass in the trenches that just needs some game time. If we can perform with these injuries, I'll change my tune on Frye in a heartbeat.

The challenge, IMO, is Indiana has one of the most unique defensive fronts in college football. Lot of odd sets and window dressing that easily confuses offensive lines.

So not great timing with the injury to Seth.

But we’ve got the talent and ability to run the ball. IMO, this is a game where you establish dominance with the run game and tell Indiana to try and stop it. This is why we have Tre and Judkins.

My biggest concern is we get too cute in the game plan. Saturday is the time to show Indiana what big boy football actually is…….i really hope we aren’t seeing tons of WR screens for negative yardage and unnecessary trick plays…..show up and hit them in the mouth early.

This is a fine sentiment, it sounds good, it’s pithy. It’s the kind of thing you hear a lot in political season. But that season is over, so let’s compare this pithy statement to the facts.

The subject of both of those statements is “we”. But the “we” of the first statement was the 2014 Buckeyes while the “we” of the second statement is the 2024 Buckeyes.

In the postgame interview, before his second string quarterback’s leg was even in a cast, Urban Meyer was saying that the (2014) Buckeyes can win a national championship with their 3rd string quarterback. He was saying that with the knowledge that his third stringer had a better deep ball than the two guys in front of him.

When we say that the 2024 Buckeyes can win an NC after injuries to their best two OL, what knowledge are we basing that on?

Is it true or not true that the 2024 Buckeyes had poor OL depth at the start of the season? Look through the OL thread. Look through their position coach’s thread. There was not a single citizen of Buckeye Planet who claimed to believe otherwise (apologies if I’ve forgotten a post or two among the hundreds bemoaning the poor depth).

Is it true or is it not true that a team with poor OL depth is likely to struggle against a top 5 team after losing their two best OL? Indiana is a fraud at top 5, granted. So replace “top 5” in that question with “top 10”. Does the answer change?

Before the injury my pick was 31-16.

Now, this game looks more like 17-16, and I have no idea who has which score.

Would love for the Buckeyes to blow them out. If they do, I’ll be giddy. Not because they will have proven me wrong, but because I’ll know that I had no rational reason to expect that outcome.
I agree with you. The OL strength and recruiting has brought a level of concern and frustration to the fans for a while. Probably to the coaching staff as well, however, at times it doesn't seem like it. There is a reason they went out and got Seth. I will leave that for other off season postings.

However, if anybody can scheme around OL issues, it would be Chip Kelly. For years he has done more with less. That is the factor that kind of gives me some level of comfort. If Day is still calling plays, I would be inclined to throw the white flag up. Visions of the Cotton Bowl fiasco are circling in my brain.

Let's see how it goes Saturday. The RPO and possibly tempo (apparently Chip doesn't like to implement it as much) may be the God send, because they are most likely not going to over power up front. Issues in the red zone may arise.

We shall see.
