Game Thread Indiana at tOSU, Sat. Nov. 23, 12pm ET, FOX

The injury is just heartbreaking. How many starters is that on the Oline now? 3? If this team is able to overcome that and win the championship it will rival the 12 Gauge miracle.
It won’t happen, but if it did it would dwarf the 12 ga miracle. The Buckeyes had depth at QB that year. OL was the last position room in the Woody that they could afford to have turned into a M*A*S*H unit by the Angry Ohio State OL Hating Demon (AOSOLHD)

Most teams don't have 8 offensive linemen ready to go. The fact there are still options we are discussing here, as they are down 2/3 starters, is sort of encouraging in the right light.

Be it Montgomery or Sierveld or Padilla or whoever, it's not like any of them weren't good recruits who haven't been in the system, and especially for Montgomery and Sierveld, both of them have in-game experience as well.

It always sucks to lose a starter no doubt. And having to fight through injuries at this time of the year is never optimal. Just survive and advance.

Oh, and trust the coaches n shit.

Yeah I know some are like “well the poor recruiting has caught up to us now” but we still are plugging in guys who have proven to be pretty good. Obviously we are far from the starting 5 who started the year but I doubt we’ll be completely over ran now with the loss of Seth.

I do think we probably should’ve added 1 more in the portal but I can see why we didn’t too.

If we can win a natty with a third string QB, we can beat Indiana with a backup center.

Wish we had a natural backup at center to keep Hinzman at guard and have less moving parts. Kacmarek coming back as an additional blocker would be huge, and thankfully our RBs have done an excellent job blocking as well. While the injury sucks, I'm confident we can adjust our scheme and survive just fine.

This is a fine sentiment, it sounds good, it’s pithy. It’s the kind of thing you hear a lot in political season. But that season is over, so let’s compare this pithy statement to the facts.

The subject of both of those statements is “we”. But the “we” of the first statement was the 2014 Buckeyes while the “we” of the second statement is the 2024 Buckeyes.

In the postgame interview, before his second string quarterback’s leg was even in a cast, Urban Meyer was saying that the (2014) Buckeyes can win a national championship with their 3rd string quarterback. He was saying that with the knowledge that his third stringer had a better deep ball than the two guys in front of him.

When we say that the 2024 Buckeyes can win an NC after injuries to their best two OL, what knowledge are we basing that on?

Is it true or not true that the 2024 Buckeyes had poor OL depth at the start of the season? Look through the OL thread. Look through their position coach’s thread. There was not a single citizen of Buckeye Planet who claimed to believe otherwise (apologies if I’ve forgotten a post or two among the hundreds bemoaning the poor depth).

Is it true or is it not true that a team with poor OL depth is likely to struggle against a top 5 team after losing their two best OL? Indiana is a fraud at top 5, granted. So replace “top 5” in that question with “top 10”. Does the answer change?

Before the injury my pick was 31-16.

Now, this game looks more like 17-16, and I have no idea who has which score.

Would love for the Buckeyes to blow them out. If they do, I’ll be giddy. Not because they will have proven me wrong, but because I’ll know that I had no rational reason to expect that outcome.

I see where you're coming from with that, but I did later in the post lay out just how you can achieve that.
When you have injuries on the OL, and don't have elite backups, you can source blocking from other positions. Below is a better idea on how we are able to accomplish that, from my view:

Tight End: We have two top end blockers at this position with Kacmarek (assuming he is back) and Christian. The likely loser in this is Thurman, who has started to come on and get more run lately. I think Will is going to surprise some people, there is a reason why he was getting a near fair share split with Gee to start the year.
RB: Both Q and especially Tre have taken a step up in blocking. Tre looks like he's turned it up in a major way for NFL scouts and it is showing. This in some ways plays well for us as Tre can stay down, chip and dip and he's a menace on those slip screens.
WR: This has certainly been one of the better years in recent memory and their ability to hold the edge has been huge for Q who has hit those corner runs on fire.

Due to this, you're going to have to run more play action, which again I feel like fits into our strengths with Will. We're going to have to change our philosophy somewhat, but luckily they are still into some of our strengths. We aren't going to have to ask this offense to do something that, A) they haven't done, and/or B) that they can't do well. The truth is that when your top two WRs are Smith and Egbuka, you're going to limit how much teams can bring up their safeties, and when you still have that you still have the options above me in play. It won't be status quo, but that's not always a bad thing as we've seen.

*I feel like I didn't say the above as clearly as I wanted, but essentially it's a Moneyball approach to blocking. I don't need to replace Seth with one piece, I can use multiple pieces...something something something, first base is not that hard, tell 'em Walt.
