I'm Optimistic...Still

Yeah I know he can but will he change enough to do that? Who knows. IMO, we've got to try to dominate the game by running the ball and winning the TOP. Keep their offense off the field.

They'll likely loose Corum, their TE, both WRs, and could lose all 5 OL (think they lose 3 as it stands). Then their defense loses I think 5 players too which is a lot of turnover in a year.

Too early for next year talk I get it but we'll have everyone back at WR, RB and TE. We'll need a player or two from the portal at OL though. Defense should be disgusting though. DL of Sawyer, JT, Hall and Hamilton. I think both Tommy and Steele come back and IMO well upgrade in the secondary with Styles and Stokes entering.

Yep. Henderson and Hayden will be back, maybe Williams too. JSN is gone (I still feel he unofficially opted out this year), but Harrison, Fleming and Ebukva are all back. Can McCord be the man? The one game he started when CJ was hurt he threw for over 300 yds. I think that was against a MAC team, but still

Yeah, ya gotta believe...there is no other viable option.

One thing I will say is wow did we blow it by not going after Corum hard enough and also taking Henderson over Edwards.

Maybe we should be attempting to block kids ttun wants by recruiting them too? Not the obvious reaches but if it's between Edwards and Henderson for example maybe go with Edwards because we know Henderson doesn't end up at ttun.

Suppose same thing for McCord and McCarthy.

Again not with every kid but certainly if they're highly rated.

We need a duel threat QB. Not someone that runs it 15 times a game, but that will tuck it and run when easy yards are there. Or when the weather goes to hell in the bigten. So is that McCord? It honestly might be Brown. Kid has wheels from the tape I saw.
I think it's more the mentality than anything. CJ is probably more athletic than Krenzel, for instance, but Krenzel took the yards when they were there. Does McCord (or Brown) have the mentality to go get those yards, is the question.

What is being coached. Take the yards or stick with the play call and execute it.
All I know is Fields took off and won game after game with his feet. If he plays yesterday instead of Stroud we win 63-45 or something like that. I understand that Fields is perhaps a once a generation type talent, and had the heart of a lion when in the game, but you can't tell me you didn't yell at your TV screen at least 5 times yesterday for Stroud to take off and walk for the first down.

Was Stroud coached differently than Fields? Maybe. But I will never ever forget when Stroud said " I don't get paid to run". Right there I knew we were in big trouble going forward....

I agree that I think it's Stroud himself that is choosing not to take yards with his feet. The scrambling yards plus the fact that he basically didn't take the ball in the zone read for the whole time he was here basically says he is a unwilling runner. The odds that he wasn't suppose to take the ball in all those instance with zone read just has to be statistically impossible.

Teams know they don’t have to account for him.

The one thing I think McCord might have over CJ is the gunslinger mentality. That means more turnovers, but he won't hesitate as much. Not sure it's better, but it could be necessary at this point in the evolution of Day's offense.

Going back to the thread title, I'm going to say I'm optimistic...for now.

The next 6-8 weeks may go a long way towards how optimistic I remain. I think a long, hard look needs to be given to the positions that didn't turn over last year, especially Wilson, Mick, and LJ.

I think Day needs to give up play calling and focus on being the Head Coach. If he wants to call plays then he can be offensive coordinator (here or elsewhere) and bring in someone else to be head coach.

I do believe Ryan Day is a great offensive mind. I think that he's a great quarterback coach. I think that CJ Stroud is exceptionally gifted, physically. I don't think they ever meshed the way they should, for one reason or another. I think @LordJeffBuck is right that CJ just doesn't have "it", however you define it. I think a new quarterback running things will be a breath of fresh air next year. Not that I'll expect any of them to be Justin Fields, exactly, but Ryan Day looked brilliant with Justin and a healthy RB room, and less brilliant with CJ and piecing together what we had this year. Hopefully the injuries were a run of bad luck and he learned something about how to manage them.

Yes, there's this:

But in this 4th season as a head coach, Paul Brown went 8-2 at Massillon HS. Woody went 5-4 at Miami in his 4th. Tress was 9-4 at YSU, and Urban was 12-0 in the Mountain West.

Day is learning on the job here. You can argue that Ohio State isn't a place to learn on the job, but I'm gonna say that's moot at the moment, because he's not going anywhere this year. And he'll likely be back in 2024 barring scandal. I believe he's a smart man who will continue to learn from his mistakes, though the curve is getting steep and he is running out of time.

Finally, there's some players I hope take off for the NFL or other opportunities next year. They may be talented, but I don't think they ever performed up to it and we were better when they weren't on the field. To paraphrase Thad Matta, I hope they text because I'm tired of looking at them.

If Ohio State misses the playoff, it will land a New Year's Six bowl spot, although quarterback C.J. Stroud said he isn't sure if he would play in a non-CFP game.

As a projected top 3 NFL draft pick, Stroud has (basically a minimum of) $40M dollars on the line which is the guaranteed amount the top picks are getting. This don't even count endorsement deals and future contracts. I have now idea what Stroud thought process was concerning scrambling for 1st downs, etc. All I can say is if I was in Stroud's position I'd say in all honesty "hell yes I want to win the game; however, my #1 priority is to not get injured and screw up my potential $40M+ payday".

It not a ‘winning’ way to play. It’s understandable though. I’m not saying that’s what CJ was doing. CJ and Day know the truth.
