I'm Optimistic...Still

The game is over and it was not the ending anyone other than michigan fans wanted. It was humbling and maybe what was needed. However, I am still optimistic about this team and coaching staff.

The rivalry is definitely back. As bad as it is to lose to ttun two years in a row, our run of dominance was due to come to an end. Things return to their mean. I would love to beat them by 50 every season, but having a true rival makes those wins that much sweeter.

I still believe in this coaching staff, although a few more changes will happen. We had quite a few new coaches added to the staff this season. I didn't expect any of them to turn their units into the number 1 units in the country. Change takes time and I expect continued improvement next season. So, I'm not expecting mass turnover like we had last season, but definitely some tweaking.

I would be perfectly happy with Day giving up calling plays. Being the head coach has always seemed like a CEO position to me - hire the best coaches and let them do their jobs while you coordinate the big picture. I'm sure he and Gene Smith will be having serious meetings soon.

The upcoming recruiting class seems underrated to me. We are grabbing most of the top players in Ohio and I don't expect a big let down as we approach the finish line. Plus the stud class we had last year has a full year under their belts and I expect are chomping at the bit. Lots of talented depth will be there.

We have resources most colleges cannot imagine. From the fan base to the facilities to the donors to the support of the administration.

We are definitely still in a golden era of OSU football. If you aren't sure, just go back and look at OSU records the last 50 years to see what the last 20 years have been like.

Before my final comment - thanks to all those young men who bring us this joy, and sometimes pain, every Saturday in the fall! I cannot imagine what they sacrifice for my enjoyment. Especially considering many of them are not even old enough for me to buy them a beer.

Finally, I lived in tsun during many of the Cooper years. If I can survive being an OSU alum living there during that period I certainly can handle a two game losing streak to ttun and am confident it will be a totally different outcome next November.

Go Bucks!!!

I'm glad you're confident.

Success has ruined this fanbase. Success has ruined this program. A couple losses, a few bumps in recruiting and all - literally all - of the chicken littles are losing their pumpkin'in minds.

Ohio State was, is and will always be a blue blood program. Here's the part the fanbase doesn't seem to be able to handle - it's NOT all going to go PERFECTLY all the time.

Sometimes it's good to face a little adversity. But to listen to some people right now, they might as well fire everyone, auction the fucking Shoe or put a Spirit Halloween sign on it and completely fold the program.

This shit is going to happen from time to time people. Are there problems (real or perceived) within the program? I think so. There's definitely a perception problem of this program. BUt holy hell people are legitimately miserable over the decisions of some 17 year olds and acting like the world, at least the college football world, is ending for Ohio State. It's not. Get a friggin grip people.

How firm thy friendship indeed. What it should say is How firm thy friendship, but only if things are going our way.

I was the exact opposite, I lived in the Detroit area during the dominance, from 2004 - 2020. I was always humble about our dominance because a lot of my colleagues through coaching played for UM. I even had the opportunity to watch the 2019 game at my boy Jared Irons home with a house full of former player and current (Thomas Guines, Che Foster, Tony Blankenship, Dion Johnson Sr, Dion Johnson Jr, Eric Mayes), that was an experience to see their agony but just as I was humble about our wins, I was just as gracious about our losses.

Best case is we wake up and play to our potential but I’m also prepared for the Worst case and that this is the new culture of OSU.

I also knew from that game that
Dion would never play for us looking at his reactions

Maybe it is because I went to OSU and was essentially baptized into Buckeye lore after a childhood of already living it as a kid...but as mad as I get to lose to the team up north, anybody delusional enough to think this wouldn't happen eventually I cannot even deal with at this point in time. We're not going to beat them every year as much as I would love that.

I left the 'Shoe madder than anyone and will never forget the absolute vitriol I felt, but a lot and I mean A LOT of "fans" are overreacting right now. Before CFP I would probably be in the same boat in terms of saying the season was a disappointment after that loss. But we're not in that era now and we have a shot at a Natty, one that could mean a shot at *ichigan again. People can grow the fuck up, nut up or get out. I lived the Cooper, Tressel and UFM years...to have a shot at a national title is a rare thing and should be celebrated in any season. Spoiled is damned right, let's win this thing and not forget the chicken littles that lost their pumpkin minds after 11/27/2022. Go Bucks!

Same. My aunt Graduated from OSU and her and my uncle had me singing the fiightsong by age 3. Growing up through the 90s i hate that team but I'm also not ready to blow everything up over 2 losses. Now 3 straight and I'd start seriously considering it. But having lived through Coop the sky is falling chicken little shit that has happened immediately after that game is grating.

Hell 2006 was my Sophomore year at Ohio State it was great until it wasn't

Sounds like we probably grew up through about the same era then, I graduated in 2011. I am 100% on the same page with you though. 2 losses sucks without a doubt, but I am not ready to throw everything away given the success outside those 2 games. 3 games and we need a serious look at it. My mind went to Cooper years just because there are obvious comparisons even if premature.

But I also had some time and reflection to remember we still have the shot at a title. Wild part is that some of those Cooper teams would likely have had that shot as well back in the 90's if the CFP was around and he might have had a chance at redemption (for sure with the Joe Germaine teams anyways). You are dealt with the cards you're dealt with, but Day has the cards to potentially win a title and I hope we can capitalize on it. If he gets us to the title and/or wins it, the Cooper should be gone. If we lose badly to UGA or to *ichigan in the title game, I will have to think about it.

When I tell myself that I always follow up with the question "Do you really think Cooper would have done something with that second chance?" The answer for me is an emphatic "no". Once a bed wetter under pressure, always a bed wetter under pressure.

I'm glad for this CFP because it saves us a year of wondering if Day is a bed wetter or not. We are about to find out.

On Cooper, I agree wholeheartedly that I don't think he would have done anything with a second chance despite the talent we had. Guy was just awful under pressure. Maybe he would have, just surmising on getting an extra shot now for Day that Coop didn't have. I don't see that same clueless look in Day's eyes that Coop had and Day as a person I really like...so hopefully we don't see the same fate.

I also like that the CFP gives us a much quicker measuring stick for Day. Going back to the Rose Bowl against Utah or USC really wouldn't do anything in that regard. I'm optimistic as the thread says, just cautiously.

For the record I absolutely like Day as a person, hope he is The Guy and avoids the fate of Cooper (for him and for us). I'm just not anywhere near optimistic about it.

That's fair enough. I think we might have broached the topic a few beers in at Adriatico's lol. I'm not as sold as I was that night though, this next game is a very important one for Day without a doubt.
