What's your take on Benn entering the draft?
Mel Kiper

He's a guy who's coming out with very little buzz. Normally juniors come out with buzz. He had a QB situation at Illinois that wasn't very good. He was banged up early in the season. They kind of limped home and finished the season 3-9. This was a team that was not what they thought he would be. Benn was up against it because he didn't have the personnel he needed as a WR. He's a hard worker. He has a little bit of Marvin Harrison in him from that stand point. He's not coming in with momentum. You have to go back and look at sophomore and freshman film and you'll like what you see. I thought coming into the year that he could be top 15, now you're looking at a second rounder."

Not a lot of buzz? There's still a ton of buzz for Regis from NFL personel (sp?)...everybody knows the situation....I would bet anybody that he goes in the first round. People thought Vontae would slip too and he did, but people were talking second round, and that was crazy talk...Benn isn't going to slip past the first round and with his workouts he might not slip past 20...
What buzz does he have outside of Champaign Mr. Kid? I forgot all about him this year.

OskeeWowWowDig wrote: I'd probably take that bet. That's a lot of $$ to throw at a kid that has a lot of potential, but had trouble staying on the field for a whole 12 game college season. Let's face it; Benn isn't really a safe pick and in this economy, that could be a factor.
Percy Harvin had the same issues plus some wild off the field stuff...and he barely slipped to 22...Benn has no off the field issues. All the issues were on the field and weren't completely his fault other than the injuries. And people on this board have overblown those as well...Benn played hurt his entire freshman year with the shoulder and came back last year even stronger. This year he tweaked an ankle and it slowed him down but we wouldn't even be talking about this had UI been able to field a decent offense from the early part of the season. If you want to bet let's set it up right now before the whole draft process starts playing out please....
Percy Harvin? You're really going to compare him to Percy Harvin? Good to see some things never change...even after a 3-9 season. Yeah, he has physical tools, but so do a lot of college WRs. NFL folks tend to shy away from guys that couldn't stay on the field in college. I'm not saying a 1st round selection is impossible, but put down the kool-aid already...the cat pissed in it.

How sad is it that he had an anonymous season and came out early anyway because he knows that at Illinois there's no chance of bringing his stock up at all. His mistake was going to Illinois in the first place.

I wouldn't mind seeing him in a Browns uni - but I don't think he's worth more than a fourth rounder at this point. Some team is going to overpay for him - I hope it's not Cleveland.

He'll be fired at some point next season.

Unfortunately, I don't think that's the case at all.

The new offensive coordinator (Paul Petrino from Arkansas) and the new defensive coordinator (Vic Koenning from K-State/Clemson) were both given 2-year contracts. 7 of the 9 assistants are new next year, and all of them have multi-year contracts.

If we go 4-8 next year (and we will, because we're - say it with me, Mili - Same Old Sorry Illinois), I think you'll see Zook retained. You'll hear lots of "18 starters return in 2011... the QB will have a year under his belt... 8 home games in '11... no Ohio State on the schedule... looking for the second year leap under the new coordinators..."

Barring 2-10, Zook is here until at least the end of the 2011 season.

Almost sad to see this post as it signals that awful understanding that comes after following the Primrose Path. Roughy finally acknowledging that Zook isn't going to make the program appreciably better.

I wish better for Illinois. Don't know why they can't get there but we're all pretty sure Coach Zook isn't the answer.

Ron Zook named redshirt freshman Nathan Scheelhaase the Illini's 2010 starting quarterback - ESPN Chicago
Scheelhaase to start at QB for Illini

Illinois coach Ron Zook named redshirt freshman Nathan Scheelhaase the Illini's 2010 starting quarterback on Wednesday.

"Following spring ball, our coaching staff had some time to review the quarterback situation and felt Nathan proved himself as a leader both on and off the field," Zook said in a statement. "He showed the ability to run coach [Paul] Petrino's offense at a high level, and we thought it was important to establish Nathan as a team leader entering summer workouts."

Scheelhaase beat out sophomore Jacob Charest and true freshman Chandler Whitmer during spring practice and will make his first career start Sept. 4 against Missouri in St. Louis. Illinois is replacing a four-year starter at quarterback in Juice Williams, and Charest, who appeared in four games last season, is the team's only signal caller with game experience.

Contd.....
