Illinois Fighting Illini (you'll see)

Conversely, I'd really like to see Iowa parlay this season into a good recruiting class and become Wisconsin 2.0 in the Big Ten. They've had a couple great seasons in recent memory, but haven't been able to sustain. It would be nice to have another perennial top-25 program in the Big Ten, and I think they are as likely a candidate as anyone if Ferentz stays long-term.
I don't know. I think a lot of people thought they were on their way to that after that very good run from '02-'04...then they fell off the map for three years. I think Iowa is a decent program, good for the occasional run at a top 10-15 season followed by a couple mediocre ones, but I don't think they have the pull to become a perennial top 25 program.

They have some pretty young talent.. I think that QB is going to be a good one. I think they have a pretty good shot at staying relevant for a little longer this time. I hope they do. Hope they're a top 15 team every year and give us games like they did this year. That was almost-got-me-banned awesome.

Well, one person . . . .

Didn't even need to wait 2-3 years!

Proceeded by a homer rant similar to last year's . . .

More like a year and a half's worth. You'd have to sort through the Illinois Scout board to get a whole decade's worth. At least you're back to admit it.

Well, you got that one right, at least.

No need to kick a dog while it's down.

Who are you guys waiting on to become the fifth perennial top-25 in the Big Ten after Wisconsin? Northwestern? Purdue? Michigan State? Ill-a-fucking-nois? I'd say Iowa has a better shot than any of them. If Dantonio sticks around East Lansing for several more years, maybe they could get to that level. But have you been to East Lansing??? No one wants to be there longer than they have to be.

I don't think the Big-Ten will ever have a fifth perennial Top-25 team. Hell, I hesitate to call Wiscy a perennial Top-25 team seeing as they've only ended the year ranked in the Top-25 five times this decade. I could see Iowa and Wiscy slugging it out for that typical 4th spot in the Big Ten,they have the built in Bielema connection. Actually that's for the 3rd spot until scUM wakes up again. I always thought, given time, DickRod would field some pretty decent teams at tsun, but after this season's debacle and watching him flail around under the pressure up there, I really have my doubts now.

Right now, it's tOSU, PSU and a bunch of middling teams fighting it out (Wiscy, Iowa, MSU, NW, etc...). One good season by Iowa isn't enough for me to elivate them back up to a "consistent threat". They failed to capitalize on a really good run earlier this decade, don't see what's changed to make it different this time.

That's fair enough, but if scUM continues to flounder, aside from helping tOSU and PSU recruit, someone in the Midwest, aside from Wisconsin, is going to capitalize on the recruiting front (I would hope). I don't think any program is better situated to take advantage than Iowa. While they didn't sustain their earlier run, as you and others have alluded to, at least they had an earlier run. I think Ferentz is overblown as a coach (he's had at least as many stinkers as surprises), but he's not a bad coach and the perception is that he's a steady leader. And let's be honest, unlike The Zooker, he ain't gettin' fired. He's also been at Iowa long enough that recruits can justifiably feel good that he'll be around for their four year stretch; the rumors about his promotion to the big time have come and gone. That distinguishes him from Dantonio and Fitzgerald. There's obviously some young talent at key positions in Iowa City. If any of the mid-tier teams in the Big Ten are primed to take a step forward, I don't see a more likely candidate than Iowa.
