Lopo.....
I read some of the stuff you and others on the Illini Scout board say about Ohio State's academics. You folks need to crawl out of that hick town of Champaign. In case you folks didn't know, Ohio State's long reputation-draining policy of open admissions (but not open graduation as you and Michigan folks have always incorrectly implied) ended about 10 years ago. Ohio State's average freshman ACT score is right about even with the average Illinois student's score.....in fact, OSU's may have surpassed Illinois' in the past couple of years.
Then some of your dimwitted Illini failed to mention Ohio State's Business School. It has ALWAYS been better than Illinois' business school and has widened the gap substantially the past 20 years. OSU's Fisher College of Business is a Top 10 MBA program in the nation.
Furthermore, Ohio State has several programs that are ranked far ahead of any like programs at Illinois.
Illinois still enjoys a lead over OSU in prestigious academic reputation, but those reputations take years and years to change...like decades. But the way you Illini talk it's by a wide margin. Overall, Illinois is 4th or 5th in the BigTen in this category. Ohio State is 5th or 6th depending on how you measure it. Given another dozen years or so, OSU will probably climb over Penn State and Illinois to reach the #4 or #3 spot, challenging the Top 3 (Northwestern, Michigan, and Wisconsin).
Lastly......Jeff Cumberland couldn't get into Ohio State but miraculously he was welcomed with open arms by Illinois. That's a fact that your Illini bretheren never mention and causes them to get riled up......
Lord Jeff Buck, here's a doozy. Do you remember making this post?
"Illinois under Zook should be a lot like Minnesota under Mason - they'll get a bunch of "second tier" recruits who never get offered by OSU, PSU, Michigan, Notre Dame, and might occasionally land a top-20 player from Ohio. Buckeye fans shouldn't worry too much. Now Iowa, on the other hand, might just see their Chicago pipeline dry up considerably now that Zook is running the show in Champaign."
The only part of that statement thats true is the last one. Iowa's decline since Zook's hiring is not a coincidence.
Daveboy, amazing how you havent responded since Orangeroughy pointed out that youre "statistics" were in fact false and came from tOSU's own website. shocking.
"Ohio State's average freshman ACT score is right about even with the average Illinois student's score.....in fact, OSU's may have surpassed Illinois' in the past couple of years. ":tongue2:
You may in fact reach the academic levels of Illinois eventually and maybe even surpass Illinois but its all about reputation, which takes a long time to establish.
Few examples:
My best friend got into the #1 Chemical Engineering program at Purdue, but was wait listed at Illinois. After senior year ended, he was let into Illinois off the waitlist and immediately jumped to Illinois even though their program isnt quite as good (still top 10). Why? As he put it, "Its Illinois. Everyone knows about Illinois' engineering reputation." Reputation.
Also, the sun-times within the past month or so had an article stating that Illinois has the greatest numbers of foreign students of any public university in the country. (Though, im curious as to which private school has more). It has an international reputation.
My roommate is from Taiwan. I asked him why would he come all the way to Illinois from Taiwan. He said, "Everyone knows of Illinois in Taiwan and China. Its the goal of any future engineer and chemist." Reputation.
you can have the statistics but its all about the reputation and that take MANY years to build.
just like every school, Illinois is trying to improve its academic rigor and the quality of students it lets in. Last year was the toughest year ever to get into Illinois and the school is planning on decreasing the number of spots for each of the next several years.
As for Cumberland, yea, as a program Zook needed playmakers so he somehow got Cumberland in.
But what you fail to mention is that Illinois rejected two top talent kids last year in '07 in 4star WR Anthony Morris and 4star RB Deries Hodge. Most of the coaches thought Morris was very near the level of Benn. This year, Morris is reapplying for admission after working on his test scores and improving his grades.
Also, Illinois rejected a couple of kids this year who wanted to commit to them but didnt have the academics.
You mention that OSU has programs that are "ranked far ahead of any like programs at Illinois. " Not saying they dont exist but please enlighten me.
