Illinois Fighting Illini (you'll see)

Several Big schools are suffering from state budget cuts.
Illinois is one.
Wisconsin is another.
I think it could effect play on the field.
But on face value it looks like a great hire.
Are you saying that it's a great hire because he's a well known name? Because I don't see how an average NFL coach with little college HC experience will be a good hire for a middling to terrible football program. I'm sure telling stories about guiding Rex Grossman to the Super bowl will make kids want to listen, but will kids still want to really sign with Illinois?

Yeah but South FL is absolutely loaded with talent, Illinois is not... The top talent in IL alone will be picked off by the top B1G teams, and the scraps get fought over by the entire B1G west

I had to double check and make sure this wasn't the Shenanigans thread for a second....

Look. The state of Illinois has financial issues, so grabbing a coach like Smith IS a GREAT hire for them.
He's the best they could probably do right now.
Others states are having the same issues.
Even Louisiana is talking about the effects of state budgets on higher education and athletics.
Just imagine mighty LSU playing half a football season!

When you're a team that's been as bad as Illinois has been...it's nice to have some reason to get excited and I think this move does just that. AD fires a guy who was just given an extension and makes a flashy (will it actually work?) hire. They need this. I don't mind seeing any B1G team trying to or becoming better that isn't scUM or the pedsters.
