Illinois Fighting Illini (you'll see)

Two more commits in the last 10 days, both NR 2* kids
JC OT Dallas Hinkouse (other offers: MAC, Sun Belt, and Conf USA fodder)
NR WR Marchie Murdock (other offer: Navy)

I remember when we had the influx of Illini schmucks a few years ago, the one sane orange poster (OrangeRoughey) talked about how he was glad the days of rooting for a team full of 2*/low 03* scrubs that Ron Turner had recruited were over. Well, this year's recruiting class breaks down as follows so far:

4*- 1
3*- 17
2*- 7

Three of their last four (and four of six) commits are 2* kids.

Of their 25 commits, 4 are ranked in the Top-50 at their position. In fact, here's the breakdowns (Scout):

QB- 8
RB- 96, 94
WR- JC, NR
TE- 51, 59
OT- 70, 98, JC
OG- None
OC- None
DE- 115, 132
DT- 36, 46, 53, JC
OLB- 72 (soft)
ILB- None
CB- 34, 78, 86, 112
S- 67, NR, JC, JC

The crown jewel of their class, #8 QB 4* Aaron Bailey is the only player ranked higher than 34th in the country at his position. He'd be crazy to stay there. That is MAC-level recruiting. The past 3-4 classes weren't markedly better than this. There are some really dark days ahead for Illinois.

There's also a thread on their front page (scout board) celebrating a commitment from the #240 WR, a 2* from FL (so he must be good )...but can't find anything saying he actually did commit. They tout his offer list as evidence of his skill...

Boston College, Duke, E Mich., Indiana, Marshall, Miami (oh), Nebraska, Wake Forest.

You might as well be describing the entire Big Ten, with the exception of us and scUM.
Yeah, but the rest of the B1G didn't have a clown come here saying they were gonna win multiple conference/national titles and become "very Miami-esque" talent wise after one decent season.

CB commit Reon Dawson from Trotwood has flipped to scUM, and they have two other "soft commits". What a disaster.

...and their wonderful fanbase keeps it classy...

Re: Dawson Verbal to Michigan this Evening
Oh well....hope he tears an ACL.

Worst thing that ever happened to them was backing into that Rose Bowl after 2007. Made them think they might actually become a relevant program.

Fifth Illini aide to leave (4th voluntarily) RT @McMurphyESPN: Illinois DB coach Steve Clinkscale officially hired as Cincinnati's DB coach

Find it humorous for a B1G Coach to switch to UC equal job? Actually had the chance to speak with Dick Butkus last weekend, and he had nothing good to say about Beckman, telling me how his nephew left the staff because of how much dislike he had for him. Said Beckman speaks a bunch about UM from the time he spent on his staff at BG. On the other hand told me he met Groce at the Spring Game and absolutely loved him, not s surprise.

Beckman is going to drive that program into the ground for a good 5-7 years. They're gonna struggle to win 3 games this year, IMO. Probably not much better in 2014, then their looking for a coach to come in and clean up his mess. Good luck with that. Best they can hope for is another Ron Zook "retread" kind of coach that can occasionally make them competitive.

I was under the impression that Beckman was a great recruiter and a decent to good coach. I even thought he was a candidate to be on the staff at Ohio State with Meyer if he didn't get the Illinois HC gig first.

What in the hell happened?

Some people are good up to a certain level of responsibility, and at certain tasks. Once they get above a certain level, they get overwhelmed. I think this is what happened to Beckman. He can recruit very well within a limited scope and can coach a position or two at a time, but once he got the where he had to ran all of recruiting and was overall responsible for the day-to-day oversight of the entire team, that was simply too much...
