Illinois Fighting Illini (you'll see)

Re: Which football player are you most excited to see this year?

For me, it's Hawthorne. I want to see the Illini as a team actually, because I think this can be a truly special season. The Illini have a lot of great players who will be playing for a long time, but Hawthorne is just a special player. The OP linked a story, but I don't think people realize just how special a player Hawthorne is and has always been. I honestly believe if he stays healthy, he will win the B10 DPOY award. That says a lot because of the other special talents on the defense (IF he doesn't win, it'll be because another Illini won it). If Hawthorne plays offense as well, then I will go out and say he will win the B10 POY overall. And I still stand by my statement that he has Heisman potential (Along with Scheelhaase). If the Illini win as big as I think this year (I honestly think they are a NC darkhorse), Hawthorne will finally get his due. He is the best overall player in the country this year IMHO. A healthy year will prove that.

I'll just leave these highlights I just saw. I never saw them and they aren't on any of the major sites. I always thought Hawthorne should've been a 5 star coming out of HS because he' was/is a special player, and his career to his point has proved it. These highlights show that special player back in HS who stood out among a team of stars and carried them to a state title (Literally). I'm telling you, if he plays offense enough (Say 25+ catches which he would get as much as 500 yards IMO) as well as returns PR, he is going to blow up on the national scale. His senior year is going to be as dominant as his ESL senior year was. Then he'll blow up even more in the draft process (Especially since he's a senior who will go to the Senior Bowl, etc.) before going to the combine and running a sub 4.35 possibly sub 4.3 40 (Along with Green BTW) at 6'0+, 200+ pounds. Combine that with his physicality and more importantly special/clutch playmaking skill and he's the best CB in a while IMO. He has #1 overall type of ability because he's a true shutdown CB with special playmakings skills AND is from all accounts, a leader. The crazy thing are a few others on this same defense with similar potential (Top 10-15). It will be a special year.

It actually gets worse from there...

Hawthorne's career numbers (3 seasons):

118 tackles, 8.5 TFL's, 5 interceptions (2 for TD's), 16 passes broken up; honorable mention All Big Ten last season.

Doesn't exactly sound like the next Ronnie Lott to me, but what do I know?

The stats are misleading. The other team always goes to the other side of the field to escape his explosive game changing skills. He is better than Deion Sanders because he is also the best tackler in the nation.

People will be down on PSU but the fact is they are a good team that lost to a legit top 35-50 team. They lost their two best players on offense (True impact players) so a struggle was expected. They will still win more than a few games/be competitive. But I will say that the Illini game will be a defensive shutdown for the Illini, possibly a blowout overall if the offense is clicking.

 Of course, he only says this so he can thump his chest when they roll the shell that team is.

Here, he rationalizes drawing 43K fans:

Despite the talk about lack of fans, 43 K is a good turnout. According to those who went it was a good atmosphere and the team was very focused. The weather stopped them from easily going over 50,000. I'm not really worried about them. Also something interesting I noticed, the NG goes out of their way to down the Illini (Especially Tate and others who don't like non-access). Not what I'd call a hometown type of paper but those little doubts/misinformation will be silenced soon.
43K = "good turnout" :lol:

"The weather stopped them from easily going over 50,000"...:slappy:

Oh, kid. I'm sure you're just trolling those orange goons, but you're just too fun to [censored] with.

Don't believe the Michigan hype. The Illini have as good a chance as anybody. They are really gaining momentum in recruiting, both in-state/regional and nationally. With the season I think they are about to have, there will be a major talent influx to a team that is already very talented. The best part of it all is the QB in the class is a truly elite type of player. Very very exciting times are coming for Illini football (And basketball BTW).

Lets see who has committed since we last checked w/ position rankings and reported offers:

RB NR (other offers: Eastern & Western Illinois)
WR NR (other offers: NONE)
OLB 58 (other offers: Ball State, Houston, IU, Minny, Toledo, W Kentucky)
S NR (other offers: Duke, UGA, GT, Hawaii, Kansas, ped aggy)
S 67 (other offers: The MAC, Iowa, sPitt)
DE 112 (other offers: NONE)

Well, [censored]. Who can compete with that?
