Illinois +10.5 at tOSU (ov/un 134.5) Tue 7 ET, ESPN

Still think Diebler is the key.

BTW, how do I activate the "Quick Reply" at the bottom? Can't seem to find
the so-called "Quick Reply icons".

Anyway, I know I've been harping on the lack of production of 3bler, but it
appears to me that it is almost by design!!?? Yes he took a bad desperation
shot late in the Purdont game, but quite frankly, as someone once said,
"desperate times call for desperate measures," and had he made that shot ...
well, if we are desperate for 3 points on the road, I think the odds of 3bler
draining a 3 ball are better than Sully beating a triple team, making the shot,
having some goon Big Ten official actually calling the foul, AND making the foul
shot. Am I wrong? Make no mistake, I love Sully's game and he was dominant
inside, but without the Diebler threat, and he hasn't been a threat for several
games now, double and triple teams on Sully late in the game have become
the common element in the opposing defenses.

The 3-headed monster that made this team virtually unbeatable was Lighty,
Buford and Diebler. The fabulous freshmen have indeed been fabulous, but
we can still win and overcome freshman mistakes when the core of this team,
the upperclassmen, control the game (see Sparty game).

Tonight, McCamey is fully cabable of a Moore/Taylor type game. The
question is will the 3-headed monster return as the threat it once was. I
think the Buckeyes win at home regardless. But whether its an ugly 3 point
win with the Illini simply running out of time to close a 17 point deficit, or a
solid 20 point confidence restoring win, will depend on the all-around play of
the upperclassmen in the final 10 minutes ... as it always has, regardless of
the opponent.

Good stuff Doc, we'll need the older guys to get back in gear, specifically Diebler and Lighty, who's had a rough stretch of games to say the least.

As for the Quick Reply Box- just click one of these
quickreply.gif
icons that are at the bottom right of each member's post and the Quick Reply area will "ungray."

The problems at Purdue were

  1. When the Buckeyes began to build momentum early on, the referees got involved and made several calls against the Buckeyes. Bad calls may have become more balanced as the game progressed but, early on, the calls went against the Buckeyes.
  2. When the calls went against the Buckeyes, they let it get into their heads. No smiles. Just tension, shaking of heads, and signs that they felt they were getting jobbed.
  3. Then, they stopped making anything outside the arc, or just about anything. They went stone cold.
With all due respect to Coach Matta, it's his responsibility to see when the momentum is changing and the team is reacting emotionally. He needs to use his timeouts better than he did in Wisconsin or Purdue.

The guys need to loosen up and have some fun. Basketball is fun. If you're going to the game, take a sign that says, "Hey Sully! Have some fun!"

If they loosen up, they will wipe the Illini off the floor.

I will admit that I have not read the Purdue game thread yet. However, some comments from some of the posts here.
Sullinger must start to get the ball back outside before he is double or triple teamed and tries to force a shot. In my opinion that is what happened in the Purdue game, Painter said two or three guys at Jared as soon as the got the ball and he tried to force shots. He must realize as soon as he gets the ball to go with it or pass it back outside.

I also think that the wrong guys are sometimes shooting the ball when there are other guys standing wide open and might be better shooters. I think Craft is starting to shoot a little more from the outside and that is not his forte as of yet. Diebler and Buford are not getting the ball enough to shoot. There have been numerous times when the ball has gone inside and Jared does not get it back out fast enough for the guys to have the good luck. Lighty needs to do what he does best and that is use his athleticism to score.

The team as a whole need to get back to playing defense like they have previously this year. Purdue completely dominated us when it came to playing defense.

Illinois will not be a cakewalk because they have some pretty good athletes but they do not play while together. Thank goodness for Weber.

The problem (singular :) ) at Mackey was that PU had a player who would have scored at will, blindfolded, with Stacey Augmon guarding him. End of story.

Some of the things I see with this team that could change this team from very good to great would be the following.

We need to see someone take a more aggresive role in the dribble drive and finish at the rim. With the defenders afraid to sag away from our shooters (Diebs and Bufford when Craft is in the game) we should be able to take it to the rim without the extra helper from the outside. This will allow Sully and Dallas to then clean up on the offensive boards assuming the driver can at least get the ball off the glass. Eventually the defense will start sagging in on those dribble drives and creating those open shots we all love to see.

This team does not do a very good job on screens on the ball or off the ball. I don't know if it is a speed thing with our shooters but I don't see them getting much separation from their defenders even when they do rub off the screener tight. Diebs and Bufford don't need a lot of room to get a shot off but they still need time to square their bodies up and face the rim for quality shots.

Lastly, I would like to see this team have the ability to change up defenses a little bit. I know we (as fans) cried the blues when we were an all zone defense team and now it seems I see more and more folks complaining about the all man but still I would like to see the option there to at least switch for a few possesions. When we see these hot shooters (see J. Taylor or E. Moore) light up anyone that picks them up one on one it would be nice to drop into a quick zone to try and throw off their rhythem and jump back into man the next time down the floor. This is not a huge problem because most of the time the Bucks play solid defense anyway but there has to be something they can do to disrupt those kind of runs we have seen in our 2 losses.

I love watching this team and starting tonight would be a perfect time to start building momentum towards the B10 tourny and the NCAA tourny. Start with tough D and find that shooting touch and we are very tough.

If I'm Thad, I put Lighty/Craft on McCamey the entire game. Tisdale is an overrated fuck, he isn't beating us. McCamey is badass though, and I would be happy to see him hounded for the entire game.

Its consistently being overlooked, but Craft had 6 or 7 steals last game, and not just because PU was being sloppy. He had several beautiful steals.

He can lock McCamey down, game over EARLY. But, we have to be on alert, no more of this bullshit "letting one guy go off for 100 points on 50 of 53 shooting." Fuck that.

I see a big game from Sully.
