If Tressel retired today, who would you want to replace him?

...his two consecutive 8-4 records and erosion of the talent base (see Lloyd Carr's records his first two seasons) were why he was in the position to be fired.
Funny how scUM fans would now thump their chest over an 8-win season.

Give me Bo Pelini or Urban Meyer.
Pelini is too much of a hot-head (he is from Youngstown, you know), and Meyer is too much of a whack-job...

Home-run coaches usually don't follow legends. They follow the coaches that follow legends. Or else, once more removed. So whoever is our next coach will be a huge disappointment. Just get ready for that.
Yep, but the home run coaches follow failures who can recruit their asses off, despite the lack of success at Ws.

That is one common factor for a quick turn around to top tier - that the "failed" coach is a recruiter. Laugh at the Zooker all you want, he brought in some bodies for Urban to work with when he showed up.

This all suggests Al Golden will be the next superstar coach.

Earle Bruce didn't set the world on fire, but I can't describe him as a "huge disappointment" either. This is The Ohio State University, and disappointment here is only relative to the high standard of excellence which our ongoing string of Hall of Fame coaches have set.

I do not want to see Urban Meyer as the HC for Ohio State. Not a fan of his in any way.

I think it will most likely be Hazell or Fickell.

I agree with those that say the Kent State stint just might be a "working interview" to see how he fares as a HC.

Objectively, I couldn't agree more. But I also remember how people talked about "ol' 8-and-3 Earle" in the most derisive tones, up until he was fired.
