If Tressel retired today, who would you want to replace him?

Just re-read this thread starting from Page 1. The first few pages are not some of BP's best work.

Multiple suggestions back in 2006 that Dan Hawkins would be great, while people argued that Urban Meyer wasn't 'all that' and would eventually get exposed at a pressure-cooker like Florida. By 2008 this thread takes a turn into the "lets go hire Brian Kelly" zone.

I submit this as Exhibit A why Andy Geiger and Gene Smith get the big bucks and we're all posting on Internet message boards.

Interesting...UM would definately be on my short list if something unthinkable were to happen...

As for the ND issue; It seems to me that UM may be in a better situation at Florida anyway...I'm thinking that it's only a matter of time before there are big coaching shakeups at both Miami and FSU. I mean Bowden can't coach forever, can he?, and I imagine Coker is feeling the heat a little down there, especially after that bowl game humiliation...UM could really corner the recruiting market down there and set himself up for an extended run of success...JMHO.

I am awesome! Don't lump me in with the rest of you simple message board posters! This pirate knows some football! :pirate1:

*not really, but one of 6000+ posts was bound to be good...

Patterson is 51 years old. If Tress hangs them up in 2014, he'll be 54 years old. He's also never struck me as a guy who will coach into his late 60s, so do we really want to replace a legend with a guy who has coached for ONE year in the eastern time zone (1 year as a DBs coach at NAVY), with no Ohio ties?

Patterson would do fine, but I think there are better candidates and I wouldn't be 100% sure he would even be interested.

Good point on the age/math thing.. I just like his team's style of play....I am not one of those who wants JT to retire anytime soon..I just think this thread was an interesting hypothetical topic. For the record I also would prefer the Ohio ties and hope Tress picks his own successor and that it is one of his assistants or protoges....someday... not soon.

Who Should Succeed Jim Tressel at Ohio State?

Jim Tressel has brought unprecedent wininng to Ohio State

After Jim Tressel deviated from three years to two on his contract extension, Buckeye nation has been wondering if he will retire after the 2014 season. ESPN?s Adam Rittenberg believes he will.

When asked who should take over, Rittenberg indicated that he did not think Ohio State would chose from one of their current assistant coaches but felt they would get a big name high profile coach to replace Tressel. I?d like to argue against Rittenberg, hiring someone outside the family could prove detrimental to the Ohio State Football culture.

In a story published by Robert Gartrell of Lantern titled, ?Who Will Be Next when Tressel Decides to Hang Up the Vest?? four names are mentioned: Urban Meyer, Bo Pelini, Luke Fickell and Darrell Hazell.

History shows that Ohio State should go with either Fickell or Hazell. Urban Meyer just stepped down from coaching, but in 2015, I would be surprised if he were not coaching somewhere or ready to come back. But even if he is available, I do not think he would be the best hire for OSU.
If one studies major college football programs at the level of Ohio State, one finds an alarming trend. If a program has success, continuity breeds more success. Michigan did this for almost 40 years until 2008. They are currently going through their worst stretch since 1962-1963.

Things changed in 1969 when Bo Schembechler took over. Bringing the winning ways he learned under Woody Hayes, Schembechler ushered in a new era of Michigan excellence. After Bo retired, the reigns were handed to Gary Moeller and after his coaching stint ended, Lloyd Carr was promoted. From 1969 to 2007, Carr?s last year, Michigan had an overall winning percentage of almost 78percent.

Since Carr retired, Michigan?s overall percentage is about 42 percent and they are going to their first bowl game since Carr left. Rodriguez was not a Michigan man and brought the spread offense with him. So far, the decision to go with Rich Rod over a proven Michigan man has been highly detrimental even to the point where Ohio State fans are complaining that the rivalry has lost a lot of its luster.

i guess my pick would be Urban Meyer...hes proven he can win and he has proven he can recruit if given the resources...i think by the time tressel retires it will maybe be around the time Urban will be ready to come back to coaching

I am still going with Hazell. This Kent State stop is a great opportunity for him to run his own program. It gives him head coaching experience that people will want from the next head coach. It also will help him strengthen the recruiting ties in ohio, if they were not already strong enough. I also still think he is Tressels hand picked replacement and the job at Kent State is just another step in Tressel's plan.

like S&G said....he's also proven he burns out pretty easily. I think one of two things would happen:

1. he comes back refreshed and doesn't skip a beat from his Florida dominance. he maintains this pace for a few seasons, and burns out again.
2. he comes back with a different attitude towards coaching that prevents him from burning out......it also prevents him from getting the results he got at BG, Utah, and Florida.

I'll pass on both of those options.

ya these are all good points and it is a risk obviously if he would come back, but i am of the belief that 2-5 years off for him would be great for his health...i think he would come back like he did in #1 but not burn out after one year because he realizes how it hurt his reputation the last time(s) it happened...first and foremost tho i never want tressel to retire
