If defensive staff changes are coming, who should OSU be looking to hire?

Chizik at DC I could get behind.
Makes the most sense to me unless they are [God forbid] looking at giving LJSr the co-DC role.

My other problem with Johnson is it probably takes Durkin out of the equation because neither Durkin nor LJSr have any DB coaching experience.

This is where a guy like Chizik or Sheridan could be huge...if they can convince LJSr to come to Columbus as JUST a DL coach and then bring in a top flight DC with experience coaching DBs. Vance Joseph could still be a name to watch here.

Other than MAC level and below, who hires a new to the school head coach who's 61-62. It maybe happens if you're already at the school. In Johnson's case, PSU decided to pass on him as head coach for the second time in 3 years. At that point, I think he may have just been ready for a change of scenery and possibly even felt a bit underappreciated. Because of that dynamic, I don't think its a stretch at all that a full court press from Urban(who JoePa liked a lot) + a nice raise was all it took to get him. I don't think he'll be co-DC at all. So that leaves either Fickell getting to take full ownership of the DC position and us hiring a younger DB coach or bringing in someone like Chizek, Chaviz, Sheridan to coach DB's and be DC

If LJSr = OSU you have to think Thomas Holley, who we were told OSU originally passed on, might be in the mix again. LJSr obviously liked him at PSU...

I don't see any way Fickell is given full reign over the defense next year...just my guess...

I suspect that Larry Johnson is an upgrade at DL coach. I am trying to find his "recruiter ranking", but I sure seem to remember he was always in on a lot of great high school players.

The last few years especially his recruiter ranking most likely took a hit as the scandal and scholarship reductions limited both the number of recruits he could go after and the quality of kids(especially outside of PA) who would consider PSU

But prior to that, he's always been considered a top recruiter

I don't know how I feel about this...The comments about OSU in the past were not only inappropriate they were also wrong. Look at the successful African-American coaches and players to come out of OSU under Tressel. Hazell, Haynes, Johnson, Drayton, etc are all doing well and moving on up the ladder. Tressel cared deeply about his players (and went down with some of them ultimately). I also just don't know if I like having a staff with a bunch of big egos on it. I think the family atmosphere of a staff worked well in the past, its working well in East Lansing and I think there's something to be said for cohesion and consistency. I wouldn't mind a low key safeties coach to come in and replace Withers...Besides, that makes it less likely we'll be searching for new position coaches next year...

The nice thing about this hire is I don't see Johnson moving up the ranks much more. He's getting older and hasn't yet had an opportunity to head coach. He's been successful as a position coach and a recruiter and still hasn't. I think he ends his career as a position coach or maybe DC. This could prove to be some stability over many years. We all knew Vrabel would leave, we assume Fickell is holding out for a decent HC job, Herman and Warinner will also likely be leaving in the next few years for HC jobs.
EDIT: Stability of course only matters if he turns out to be a good fit. Not trying to force this.

I'm reserving full reaction until I see who is hired as DBs/S/CO-DC. However as Armchair (someone who hasn't played/coached) coach, this hire has me scratching my head, as in "this is the best we can do?" This certainly isn't a home run, and honestly feel kinda like an "oh shit" reaction than a thought out hire, like the DBs/S/CO-DC.

And the bile rises to my throat at just his mention. Good coach? Yeah. Good recruiter? Yeah, that to.
But, why hire anyone from that stinking hot mess at Ped State? You have all of college football to pick from with Urban.
Vance Joseph. Didn't he just get picked up by the Texans new coach?

This guy's record for developing DL in the last decade plus is pretty much unrivaled. And he recruits PA/MD/DC/VA like a madman. This is a homerun hire from a football/recruiting standpoint.
