If defensive staff changes are coming, who should OSU be looking to hire?

Re: Johnson established himself as one of the country's most prolific East Coast recruiters and a top-notch defensive line coach. Johnson is considered an elite teacher of defensive linemen. The move will carry significant implications on the recruiting trial, as Johnson was long considered Penn State's most important recruiter. His presence on the Ohio State staff will increase the Buckeyes' recruiting arm in both Pennsylvania and Washington D.C., where Johnson was a longtime high school coach.

I think Urban hit a "home run" with the hire. Johnson has proven to be an outstanding teacher/coach/recruiter, tireless worker, and a loyal employee to his school. Any past differences he may have had (with Ohio State) will be forgotten when he becomes a BUCKEYE.

Agree.

I may be remembering wrong, but didn't LJSr have some less than flattering things to say about the Tressel administration and their relationship/treatment of African American student athletes? I believe this was a major criticism of his recruiting philosophy.

If true (and again, I'm probably misremembering), why would A) He want to accept a position at OSU, particularly one that may be an attempt to meet a minority quota? and B) Why would OSU want anyone with this history on their staff?

Feel free to delete this if I'm as off base as I hope I am... if that makes sense.

If you wanted a coach who could recruit and develop players, this is about as good as it gets. Going to be weird transitioning from hating him to rooting for him, but to be honest, I've cheered for more than one Buckeye who ended up embarrassing me. Here's to long-term success!

minority quota?
Yeah, I could have phrased that better.

I do know that one of the concerns that's been shared (at least on bulletin boards/sites) is Ohio State's lack of having African American coaches that student athletes can connect with. Outside of GAs, there's just Coach Drayton, right?

Again, I could be one million percent off base... and I certainly didn't want to open a topic that should have been on the Poli Board.

One thing I cannot figure out is, why would Ohio State hire someone at Larry Johnson, Sr.'s age?

Another thing I'm trying to figure out is, were there not many candidates for the position (of defensive line coach)?

This hire just doesn't seem like a fit.

Why does age matter? How many years did you want him to be here?

He can recruit. He can coach. This is business. Sign him up.

Maybe I'm using it wrong then. I mean Larry Johnson and not bringing shame to the family aren't possible at the same time. Pick one.
Well, coming from experience, I met him a few times at coaching clinics (they all were standing room only) and all he talked about family outside of football. He comes off as an extremely high character guy IMO.

This guy is THE best at what he does hands down.
