If Andy Reid called for the punt team, and TO refused to leave the field...

Did Dungy look to you like a coach whose player was openly defying him? He sure didn't to me. the way it appeared on TV did make the coach look bad, but as posted earlier, it was explained after the game, and the explanation made perfect sense. I'm pretty sure they were on their own 37 yardline at the time, so it's very reasonable to assume the punt unit would automatically go out. I thought, at the time, that they needed to go for it because they weren't able to stop the Steelers' running game well enough to get many more possessions.

actually he looked pretty clueless the whole game. I called it the John Cooper look. My co-worker who's a ND guy called it the Ty Willingham look.

I love the Sports Guy, but he's got to get over his obsession with Manning. There isn't a guy he loves to bash more than Peyton, and it even hurt him earlier this year to give him credit for beating the Pats.

That said, Manning should not have waived off the coach if that is, in fact, what happened. Right or wrong, a coach's decision is his. If Polian or someone else wants to name Peyton player-coach, then fine. But that isn't the case here. No player, no matter who it is, should defy a coach.

They made that 4th and 2. This then becomes an instance of the tree not falling in the forest.

Had they failed to continue the drive, then I think the speculation concerning Manning / Dungy and who's on first has traction. Otherwise Dungy's evident ambivalence and Manning's on-field stewardship look in sync to an outsider.

Or because PM isn't a complete dickhead in the way that TO is.

Eh, you're assuming Manning isn't a complete jerk when the cameras are off. You'd think that by now folks would understand that the public perception of celebrities (sports or entertainment) hardly ever matches reality. Maybe Manning is a nice guy, but it's quite possible he's an even bigger ass than T.O. Unless you can persoanlly vouch for the dude, I'm not wasting my time assuming he's either.

I don't think this should be about Manning vs. TO. Although, I know it is. If this were about a QB vs a WR, it makes sense to me. The QB is the team leader on the field. He's the field general. The players don't listen to the coach in the huddle, they listen to the quarterback. The quarterback decides what audibles to call (or not call), and he decides where the ball is going. No one else does. The players are conditioned to listen to the quarterback, and if there's a receiver, a running back, a tackle, or anyone else making noise, it's a nuisance to the team.

Your scenario is a wide receiver (Owens) vs. a quarterback (Manning). Personally, I don't care that you picked a "bad-guy" of the NFL to be your wide receiver, nor that you picked a "good-guy" of the NFL to be your quarterback. It's still a guy who shouldn't be making team decisions vs. a guy who should.

Granted, I do see that Manning was over-stepping his authority. He's the offensive leader, he should only lead when his team is on the field. It's the coaches' decision as to when he is on the field. So it comes down to a face-off between Dungy (and the asst coaches) and Manning. The coaches should ALWAYS win that battle, if their resolve is strong enough. I'm guessing that it was not strong enough in that case, and Manning won.

This was not a Manning/Owens thing, or black/white thing.

So it's your opinion that we should assume the worst in people rather than assume what they have shown us is true? Nice attitude.

Nice reading comprehension. If you had read my post you would have known that I assume nothing about Manning or any other celebrities, good or bad. I can think of thousands of better uses for my time than assuming Peyton Manning is a good guy and T.O. is a prick. Public personas rarely ever match reality (positively or negatively) so why bother? I don't know them, so why should I care if they're genuinely an ass or pretty decent?
