I don't give a darn about your indie bands

I couldn't resist - I downloaded an iPhone app last night called Pocket Hipster. It's supposed to be a music recommendation app that instead of saying, "If you like this, then try..." it supposedly scans music on your device (it really doesn't, it just plays a few seconds from a random song), tells you it's garbage and recommends four indie tracks with brief clips and iTunes buy links. It's sort of a novel idea, though it seems rather useless for me. The first time I did it it recommended four other songs I already had.

For me the value comes in the kinda-funny animated soundboard that's included in the app. There are two hipster characters, and it looks like they'll be adding more. You can hear them say inane bullshit like, "I make political statements by painting my fingernails" or "I'm thinking of getting a tattoo across my chest that says 'Helvetica' but it will be in Arial font. It's ironic, obviously."

Just got the album "Palace" by the band "Chapel Club". If you like "The Smiths" and/or "Morrissey", check them out. "After the Flood" and "The Shore" are two of my favorites.

Just downloaded the yet-to-be-released new album from Fleet Foxes. They should be considered the leaders in the clubhouse for best album of the year. I'd say they are on to something with their album cycle. 2011 is shaping up as a rather weak year, just like 2008 was when they released their first full-length. Helplessness Blues is solid, but I don't think it would've cracked my Top 5 if it had come out last year.

Helplessness Blues is a good companion album to the Dodos' No Color. Fleet Foxes are more melodic, the Dodos are more rhythmic.

The power of the Holy Ghost comes to town
Remove the shadow of the new praetorian
Tipping cows in fields Elysian
Saturnalia for all you have

That is not your band furiously seeking commercial success, for true!

I had almost posted more on what I consider "indie" music to be, but I wanted to just post some Clutch. Been loving those guys since '92. For me, they epitomize working your ass off and loving what you do. They've toured almost non-stop since their inception. While they've had some mainstream success, their lifeblood is more underground. Quite possibly my favorite band of all time.
