I feel like something else is going on....like when someone asked if he forwarded the email, he was about to say yes when Gene stopped him.

Also, Gene said that tressel was "sorry" but Tressel never actually apologized.

I can't help but wonder if they are throwing JT under the bus.

Or Tress is jumping on the grenade.

With all due respect, that's to be expected when you set yourself up as better than everyone else.
Yes, absolutely it is. But I don't know who exactly puts that perception out there that Ohio State is better than everyone else. There are comments here and there from tOSU related people (like Gee and little sister of the poor), just as there are from Alabama, Texas, Notre Dame and USC folks. I don't think Buckeye's refrain from a reinforcement to the higher standards we place upon ourselves (in terms of violations, crimes, self-reporting etc.), but the elitism... I'm not sure if that's just jaded folks' perception from the Buckeyes or something that is legitimately out there from the Ohio State side of things.

Doesn't really matter. Its hard to fight folks' perception. Not that this situation helped at all, but I think most have had their opinion forged about how they view the Buckeyes long before March 8th, 2011.

This is not a recruiting violation. Selling items (even gold pants) that were awarded to the players pales in comparison to what transpired in Oregon or what happens in the SEC regularly. Tattoos for personal items - BIG F***ing deal!! Compliance issues? Take a good look at the NCAA landscape and get real. Contractual issues? OK - Tressel should have, could have, but didn't. I think a quarter million dollars and 2 game suspension is overkill for this, but OSU has to show that they take this stuff seriously, even though the violations are petty compared to recruiting/booster problems that are so prevalent in the NCAA.

How about possibility number four:

4. Tress is loyal to a fault. In an attempt to protect a good friend who requested confidentiality (because of the nature of the case and his own involvement as legal counsel and his violating law), he made an error in judgment and is now paying the price.

I tend to believe number four personally.

Or 5. (or corollary to 3?):

JT had flashbacks to Jermaine Hopkins being gunned down and somehow deduced that keeping {redacted} on the field would be safer than benching them. You go and bench a couple of high-profile guys even on the periphery of a major drug trafficking case and there quite literally might be some thugs looking for blood. I'm talking Chris Partlow types who don't give a fuck about wiping somebody out.

So I could see coach going through business as usual given his experiences in Youngstown.

This is probably real far-fetched, I know.

Well, the perception out here is that OSU fan is a bit ... snooty.

Perhaps - probably - that snootiness is justified.

Your programs history of success, tradition, academic excellence, 'morality' (for lack of a better word) among other things, really does make OSU one of the elite teams in the country - as OSU fan is quick to remind anyone that will listen.

So when OSU does something that reveals that they too have feet made of clay, most of the people who have been on the receiving end of that snootiness are going to react. It's to be expected.

And you're right that it's hard to fight people's perceptions and it's probably not worth the trouble.

Most people are going to believe whatever the easy thing to believe is - which is generally whatever the media tells them to believe - without doing the legwork themselves to verify whether it is true.

I get frustrated with the perception that Bobby Petrino is an egg-sucking dog because of the way he left Atlanta. But I've given up on trying to change it.

I wouldnt call for his head but I am a little insulted by the presser....give me a break....he didnt say anything because he wanted those guys to play. He wanted to win and his pride allowed him to put the university in an embarassing spot... that said as long as he cares about the kids and wins I dont want him fired.

As a fan, the one positive/winning outcome from all of this will be to see what the offensive play calling is like without Tressel. I would imagine the overall strategies/schemes won't change much, but the play to play choices will probably change considerably.

Actually, I would put my money on the offense operating almost exactly as it usually does. Tress takes Coach Bollman's play call probably 90% of the time.

When tattoo gate started, I had a distinct feeling it was only scratching the surface and I still don't know if we have seen it all yet. I am almost nervous everytime I look at espn.com. I have a crazy amount of respect for JT and the staff. JT is a GREAT mentor. I would hate to be a player that was a part of the possible downfall of a Legend.

I don't know about the egg-sucking, but any dog leaving Atlanta back then was making a smart move since Vick was in town.

I agree that a 'punishment' needs to take place, but don't see how people are calling for him to be fired and/or step down. He made a mistake, he'll learn from it and he/we move on.

It's still a great time to be a Buckeye and I will continue to support Jim Tressel, the football program and The University. GO BUCKS!
