Nutria

Built my house here back in 1993 I think, there was one stoplight between the end of the causeway and my house, now there are seven. I was in Vegas for a trade show but the president of the company I worked for was in that pileup. Funny thing was several causeway patrol officers ran into the pile also!

I am lucky to live and work on the northshore. I date someone that lives and works in NOLA so my causeway trips are weekend only usually. I do make the regular trip to NOLA airport.

We lost power but have a back up generator. Temps are rising and the snow is sleet now.

Looking like the Mississippi coast is now getting the snow y'all got this morning.

Be careful you go out driving in that sleet. icy roads can be a bitch.

I almost wish we got snow instead.
I've been told that snow doesn't feel as cold.
They say snow just kinda bounces off and you don't get wet. Whereas the shit we got this morning (rain with a little ice mixed) soaks you, then keeps you wet while that 20 mph wind saws your bones in half.

ill tell you right now if its snowing its not that cold out. when it gets cold enough you dont get snow... you dont get a damn thing. i dunno about the rain/sleet vs snow argument. i always thought that 25 feels warmer than 38. but that being said i think 8 (below) always feels warmer than 10 (above)... somewhere around 5 (below) the wind usually stops blowing...

me either. last time I saw enough snow to even consider, was the late 80's I was 10 or 11.

I'm only going by what that crew from Pennsylvannia told me and my dad.

These guys make a mountain look like a mountain again after all the stip mining is done. They were down here fixing our levee a few years back.

We got one of South Louisiana's typical winter spells. Temps dropped into low 40's or so with a steady rain and 15-20mph winds coming off of the marsh behind my hometown.

Those guys were absolutely miserable and claimed it never got cold like that in Pennsylvania. They're the ones who said you don't get wet in the snow. So you can actually work wearing little more than a long sleeved T-Shirt and be fairly comfortable. Not a chance of getting away with that down here for these types of days.

yup, pa is a big state with real different weather you have a T in the state. with the higher elevations (center of the state and the northern tier) that gets a lot of snow the other parts are similar to columbus' weather. heck here in ohio columbus doesnt get that much snow 28 inches or so but if you go 50-60 miles north that goes closer to 50 inches.

it also sounds like your "winter weather" is good october football weather. thats the only reason id like a playoff, bring you southern boys up for some real football weather this time of year! state college (penn state) should get a 4-6 plus ice/sleet today and madison has already had their first foot storm of the year, toss in msu and um already having 6 inch storms, playoff, playoff (other than seeing southern boys freeze im against it!).

ive been to nola and the area a lot back a few years ago. i really like our late fall and late winter when you guys have nice mild weather.

you Yanks should come down here for 2 a days in August.
nothing like working out in 95+ heat with 90% humidity no wind, and mosquitos big enough carry off a few defensive linemen.

seriously though. late season games played in the North would seem (at least to me) to be a bigger homefield advantage than those played in the South. For the most part, our winter weather is similar to the north's fall weather, yeah we have few days here and there with shit weather, but not a whole lot. Whereas what y'all get would be culture shock for kids born and raised in the deep South.

Looking forward to tonight's game (Saints/Bears).
Hoping the Saints win, but I could use a really bad game by Brees and a really good game by the Bears D. Here's too a windy, frigid, blizard in Chicago tonight.:oh:

Looks like the kitty likes the snow. Me too, in small, controlled doses. They took quite a few pics at work. I'll have to wait to see them on the server. It is snow.

I will say a cool day with high humidity and wind down here is miserable. As is a hot day with high humidity and no wind.

The snow today was that wet, heavy snow many folks from Ohio know. Slush on most of the roads.

I guess I still have yankee blood. Haven't even worn a jacket in LA since I moved here. Mid October to Mid April are excellent months to live here and be outside. Waterproof shoes are a good idea.

I am glad I was not traveling today. Sunday it will be back in the 70's for my trip to Houston.

Anyone remember the snowfall of 1977 in OH? Or how about the below zero week in 1982? Keep warm and dry.

nutria, cool stuff. i can appreciate that. but when i think first snow of the year i think football. i can remember playing as a kid football in the snow. nothing better than playing football in the snow, except the big snowfalls when wed play tackle football in the backyard, bundled up in clothes and sliding all over the place. hope you guys enjoy your historic snowfall. ps when ohio state won their NC after the 03 fiesta bowl 50k showed up in single digit temps and snow to welcome the team home at the shoe, that and a picture i was given taken at the snow bowl in 1950 are i think the only photos i have of the shoe in snow. granted in college i played more than once on the field in the snow.

Jan. 18th, 2003. spielman36 and I were there. I bought like ten Columbus Dispatch "Stadium Editions". Cie Grant sang Carmen Ohio...fuckin' awesome day. I remember being sick as fuck. Actually had to pull over and get sick on the way over. My uncle was like "we can turn around...you can just crash at my place"...I was like "fat fuckin' chance!...LET'S GO!"...

Living in the snow belt region of NE Ohio, I can assure you that it does snow, and quite a bit, at real cold temps. You take an air mass at around -10 and move it over the relatively warm waters (say 37 degrees) of Lake Erie and in our area there is much snow! The whole lake effect snow phenomenon is actually quite amazing. So many variables, never really know who will get really blasted. There has been more than one occasion where we have been hit hard, over a foot, and literally 2 miles away absolutely nothing.

In general, you are correct that it is hard to produce snow at really cold temps and winds do tend to die down at really cold temps (the latter due to usually being under a dome of high pressure), but in the Great Lakes climate zone some generalities are out the window.
